Union Station parking lot, 1943 (3) I don't know about the rest of you but I'm heading over to Wrigley Field for the Thrill Circus and Rodeo. So many of these old photographs are a reminder that at one time, advertising billboards stood at ground level, often surrounded by shrubs and flowers. |
Excellent follow up post on the Potter Park area FlyingWedge.
I don't recall seeing a photograph of the 8th Street School before. -nice find! http://imageshack.us/a/img7/8886/391i.jpg __ originally posted by MichaelRyerson http://imageshack.us/a/img821/3106/64ln.jpg I never knew they held rodeos at Wrigley Field. http://imageshack.us/a/img96/8315/3klp.jpg ebay __ It was also great to see the White Log Coffee Shop across from Union Station. As most of you know, the one at 1061 S. Hill Street, built in 1932, still stands. A remarkable survivor. :) |
1301 Ocean Avenue, Santa Monica
Here's one for all you guys that have done such great research. 1301 Ocean Avenue, Santa Monica is a wonderful example of Streamline combined with Art Deco. It was built in 1939, but by whom? Remodeled in 2008 at a supposed cost of $30 million (I suspect a questionable figure). In 2010 it gained somewhat Noirish status by virtue of an incident involving a number of individuals of the Jewish faith.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...nta_Monica.jpg For 2010 story go here: http://www.jewishjournal.com/thenon-...wsuit_20120815 Note the differences in the signage the photo in the article, as well as the removal / addition of shrubs. |

The hotel was designed by Beverly Hills architect William E. Foster. He did lots of apartment buildings, churches, larger homes, etc in and around Santa Monica and Beverly Hills... |

Nah, too stylish for Whitey. He (and his moll) were arrested over at the Princess Eugenia apartment complex, a non-descript joint if there ever was one. |

June 24, 2011 at 03:46 PM.....James "Whitey" Bulger, the alleged mob boss and Top Ten Fugitive who has been on the run since the mid-'90s, was arrested Wednesday night at the Princess Eugenia apartment complex in Santa Monica. His longtime companion, Catherine Greig, was also arrested. The Princess Eugenia is located at 1012 Third St., just south of Washington Avenue. On Thursday morning, media swarmed the apartment complex, trying to gather information from tenants, including in which apartment Bulger and Greig had been staying. Police officers were still stationed outside the complex as well. Ref:Santa Monica Patch |

The never-ending Dahlia story... [QUOTE=Blaster;6239859] Quote:
I was wondering when Larry Harnisch would respond to the Son You Would Never Want to Have: http://ladailymirror.com/2013/08/25/...del-franchise/ In it, Harnisch is funny and logical about it all, as usual. To quote a commenter to the story: "[Steve] Hodel is in a dream world and it actually frightens me that he was a cop. If he is this terrible about putting the pieces of Beth’s murder together, I am afraid to know the mistakes he made as a detective." Indeed. Another commenter introduced me to a word I'd never heard-- Apophenia--which is defined as "the experience of seeing meaningful patterns or connections in random or meaningless data." |

Much has been written and told of Sister Aimee's meanderings. Noticed a recent posting of a Manhattan Place home in which she may have set foot. One source supposes that home was "south of Venice Blvd. and within West Adams." http://www.westadams-normandie.com/lapl/old_houses.php But I wonder if the same house wasn't in the Hancock park area. Don't know much about Aimee's choppers, but a Mid-Wilshire location would have made a dental consultation "just around the corner" http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=16337 . Maybe someone here has a more definitive answer regarding the location of the Manhattan Place home? In no particular order, some of the LA/SoCal residences with a Sister Aimee connection. The address for this house given in news reports was 333 S. Manhattan. An apartment building is there now. What is curious is that the house in the pic above appears to have had a peaked roof and other items airbrushed in--although the short tower at left appears in the pic below as though it must have been original. It looks like there was another peaked-roof house on the north side of the one purported to be Aimee's... and, as you can see in the GSV, there is an old apartment building to the right of 333 S Manhattan now. Perhaps it was built just after the LAPL shot below... Quote:

Thank you for that info. Having spoken with at least one person who grew up in the neighborhood, before WW2, it was a baffling composite of apartments and homes and businesses in the homes and Churches. It remains that way still. There clearly are apartment buildings on the 300 block of Manhattan Place that look like they are from the '30s or later. (E.g., "320 S Manhattan Place) This means the "Aimee" residence and others like it could have been demolished or moved to make way for those "newer" buildings. http://photonet.hotpads.com/search/l...074_medium.jpghttp://photonet.hotpads.com/search/l...074_medium.jpg If you noticed the parsonage for the Church on Manhattan Place, I wonder if it was originally just another residence - with no connection to the place of worship other than geographically. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=16337 After all, there appears to have been a home on southern side of the Church that fronted Wilshire. I am guessing it remains an example of many homes in the neighborhood, including those that once fronted Wilshire. Come to think of it, I wonder why a building as splendidly large as that Church was not built on Wilshire? http://jpg1.lapl.org/pics19/00009293.jpghttp://jpg1.lapl.org/pics19/00009293.jpg |

http://jpg3.lapl.org/pics10/00024568.jpg There's a lot curious about this particular house. Are those slit shades/screens in the upper windows or worn fabric often found covering organ speakers? Custom leaded windows in a bamboo pattern on second floor? Top left corner shows evidence of cut-paste-airbrushing. Must have been a nasty looking cloud, or out-of-place zeppelin. Guessing that the overgrowth of ivy (or similar botanicals) made for a disturbingly fuzzy print image, which could have been part of the reason for correcting. Despite his/her intentions, someone's photo correction efforts may not have been an improvement. Why would the man reading on the stoop not be sitting in one of those more comfortable wicker chairs? Poor lighting? Chairs reserved only for Aimee? He's a burglar trying to avoid drawing attention to himself? |
