The blog, HERE, that I found these screengrabs from, states something I didn't know:: In 1972 a somewhat insensitive city council voted to remove the pier and replace it with a concrete island and 29-story hotel. Local citizen activists were a bit upset, and formed Save Santa Monica Bay to oppose the tear-down of this widely used--and free--public gathering place. He says that the filming of The Sting there in the spring of 1973 and subsequent publicity helped galvanize the community to save the pier and to get an initiative for the Santa Monica city ballot which passed and the council reversed their decision. In 2009 the pier celebrated it's 100th anniversary and the carousel and the building that houses it is still open! |

This was the last day of Pacific Electric rail service in the San Fernando Valley. Details from the Electric Railway Historical Association site: The last regular car left Subway Terminal at 1:20 AM Sunday, December 28, 1952—car 5138. The last car ever was the 5146, that ran as the Pacific Electric-Chamber of Commerce Special inbound, leaving Van Nuys at 11:30 AM Monday, December 29, 1952. The line went dead officially at 3:00 PM that same afternoon when power was cut off. The 17 5100s used on the Valley run were placed in dead storage at West Hollywood immediately. All trackage was pulled up except for two blocks of the inbound track on Highland avenue from Santa Monica Boulevard to Lexington, kept for freight use, and the SP trackage in the vicinity of North Hollywood. The “dream” right-of-way through Cahuenga Pass was paved over in 1957 to add two additional lanes to the Hollywood Freeway. Cheers, Jack |

Robert Brown Young in Pico-Union
Hey Tetsu and Beaudry, I just noticed that "Landmarks of Los Angeles" McGrew & Julian (1994) has a little more info on the peregrinations of Robert Brown Young's Green (1875 W 11th St, 1890) and Forget (1047 S Bonnie Brae, 1890) residences.
Although they identify these homes as being in Westlake rather than Pico-Union, they say both were moved in 1909 from S Olive because of DTLA "business expansion". The corner house isn't mentioned or how three homes ended up on two lots. Alphonse J. Richard Green appears to have owned property along Bonnie Brae Street, living at #811; he had five sons, including William J, Burton E--famous developer of Beverly Hills--Alfred, Calvin and Luther. Richard was living at 811 S Bonnie Brae in the '90s and would be living there until his death at 97 in 1934; Calvin would die at 811 in 1950. Luther married Edith Neustadt, daughter of Effie Neustadt (who lived in the early '00s at 823 S Bonnie Brae), in 1904; the newlyweds moved into a house Effie built for them on Wilshire Boulevard (see http://wilshireboulevardhouses.blogs...e-see-our.html). Edith Green died in 1908. The Neustadts and Greens were both real estate investors, the Greens acquiring the NW corner of Bonnie Brae and 11th St at some point. Alphonsus Forget's house had been built at 1003 S Olive ca. 1890--how it came into the mix is unclear-- I thought maybe he was related by marriage to the Greens, but I didn't look too far into that. At any rate, William Green was living at 1851 W 11th by 1911 in the other moved R B Young house; the house on the corner (given a build date of 1895 by the assessor), came to be occupied by Luther after the death of Effie. And in a nice noir cherry on top, Luther was murdered at 1053 S Bonnie Brae in 1927, apparently for his basement stash of booze: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-w...2520AM.bmp.jpghttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5...2520AM.bmp.jpg Times Feb 4, 1927 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1...737%2520AM.jpghttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-q...755%2520AM.jpghttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A...823%2520AM.jpghttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K...833%2520AM.jpg Times Jan 30, 1914 |
Slaying on S Bonnie Brae
:previous: Thanks. That was fascinating, but there is no 1035 S Bonnie Brae these days. It jumps from 1031 to 1037. I'm left confused as to which was the murder house.

A little on Dr. Alphonsus J. Forget's house still standing at 1047 S Bonnie Brae... Dr. Forget appears to have bought it in the mid-'90s from Casper Behrendt, whose brother-in-law was Kaspare Cohn, benefactor of the precursor of Cedars-Sinai. When the Behrendt-Forget house was on Olive Street, there was a reward out for a missing lorgnette per a classified item in the Times December 13, 1894... and later, there wa "A NAUGHTY GIRL" in residence... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G...2520PM.bmp.jpghttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-o...2520PM.bmp.jpg Times June 11 & 15, 1898 Mary Forget, wife of Dr. Forget--who worked in his residence--died in 1907; once the house was moved to Bonnie Brae, there was this, per the Herald of January 12, 1910: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-p...2520PM.bmp.jpghttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C...2520PM.bmp.jpg |

:previous: Thanks again. That actually answered a question I've had for a long time. There's a 1922 apartment building now on the site of the Dave's residence, but with the original stables on the alley. I wondered what the backstory was on that.

Even though they have already removed some of what made Classic better (My Maps were removed months ago, and I have noticed that some former 45-degree views are now 45-degree with a 3D model underlayment), it's still better than the new version. |

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Z...2520AM.bmp.jpg After posting the colorized El Monte Simons shot above a few days ago (here), I found a colorized version of the Simons at Wilshire & Fairfax... which we must have seen here before (no luck with a search)... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-k...76/simons2.jpg And here's a colorized McDonnell's (probably also seen here in b&w, but unfindable)... below it is an LAPL shot of what appears to be same location cited in the accompanying info--Beverly & La Brea--or is it? A tile-roof building is at left in both shots, wires criss-cross similarly, and there are tall signs at right in both...but the later one, based on the cars, has a curious misspelling....can anyone spot it? https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-s...nellscolor.jpg http://jpg1.lapl.org/00008/00008788.jpgLAPL Colorized shots: imbuedwithhues.com |
Then there is this shot I've seen many times over the years, but which is also elusive with the search device...
