Translation from E_R's above post:
May 28, 1929 Oil wells as adornment on the streets of Los Angeles, California An unusual phenomenon are oil towers, which the people of Los Angeles have set up as ornaments in fields and gardens. Picture shows: A street in which houses are surrounded by oil towers, and these form a strange sight. |

Mystery Brentwood (?) Mansion
Quote:
A huge hillside mansion in Brentwood in 1903? Seems unlikely & hard to believe, BUT the Sawtelle Veterans Home dated from the 1880's & would not have been too far away from what is now "Brentwood Park." Eagerly awaiting enlightenment. |
:previous:
Could it be 1913 rather than 1903? https://i.postimg.cc/MTh5NHQ9/Brentw...-1913-5-31.jpg LA Herald, 5/31/1913  |

That looks a lot like the home built in 1906-07 by Fredrick Charlesworth Paulin: https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...-_1024_pic.jpg https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...le_-_intro.jpg (Both) December 12, 1920, Los Angeles Times @ Newspapers.com https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...LAT_1_of_2.jpg https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...LAT_2_of_2.jpg July 15, 1906, Los Angeles Times @ Newspapers.com Here's an early sketch and description from the February 26, 1907, Los Angeles Times. The house looked a bit different as-built: https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag..._-_drawing.jpg https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...escription.jpg Newspapers.com Euclid Avenue and Grand Boulevard in Brentwood Park (circled in yellow below) is now I believe Hanover Street and S. Bristol Avenue. I'd guess the Paulin home was on the NW corner. Here's the area on a 1910 map, with 26th Street running along the left edge and San Vicente diagonally across the bottom half: https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...024_marked.jpg Santa Monica Public Library Mr. Paulin died at his Brentwood Park home, age 54, on October 26, 1915. |
The above property is curious.
The home that's on the corner that could be similar from Google satellite view was purportedly built in 1958 and renovated in 1990. It's possible the original home from the turn of the century was simply replaced after 50 years. https://www.redfin.com/CA/Los-Angele...9/home/8180102  |

And thanks for the translation, Martin Paul. . .much appreciated. Did anyone else notice the giant wrist watch lying on the ground? . |

And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the lady's purse on the corner. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/08R6jC.jpg What do you think it really is?... Complete photograph, here. . |

The progress of Los Angeles in figures, July 1921
For those of you who like their LA facts and figures, I found this on the inside back cover of a "Los Angeles Today" booster booklet from 1921. I've never heard of the expression "Post Office Business" but check out the jump in building permits from 1919 to 1920!

You nailed it, FlyingWedge. Thank you! Interesting that streets & residential lots in Brentwood were already so thoroughly planned & laid out by 1910. |
