I'll post a portion of the 1956 aerial later, but the configuration of the buildings on it seem to indicate that the Wadsworth buildings were razed to build the West LA VA. The Bentwood buildings mostly remain.

I guess the difference between the two(other than still standing) is Brentwood is north of Wilshire and Wadsworth was south of Wilshire.

Most of the 1890s era buildings were demolished in the 1960s.

I'm pretty sure we have seen this amazing photograph once (or twice) before on NLA.

The chapel is still there, you can see it from Wilshire. I'm pretty sure the 1890 buildings were long gone before the 1960's, the current buildings show up on the 1956 aerial.

Many of the patients were Civil War veterans.

Many or most of those old buildings were torn down due to earthquake damage and obvious obsolescence. Most hospital buildings have a life-span of about 50 years.

It appears that one of the buildings(besides the chapel, which is still there) in the ER's photo of the 1890 buildings at the VA is still there in the 1951 postcard.

It looks like all the 1890 buildings survived until the mid-30's, that's when changes started to take place(I think CBD's comment about earthquake damage is spot on). Here's the 1934 aerial, all of the 1890 buildings appear to be intact(I've circled the chapel in blue to assist in orientation):

Four years later in 1938, things have changed; the buildings that we see today at the VA have begun to be built and the 1890 building at the rear of ER's photo has been replaced.

ETA: I was focusing on the eastern side of the campus, it looks like two of the older buildings on the western side survived into the 1950's and are pictured on ER's postcard. They are not present in the current Google Map of the area.

We can see by the Application that there was a conflict with the price. Betcha it cost more than the $300K.

So many cars to identify here so I'll get it started with some in this photo. The two white convertibles in the middle, one with the top up and one with it down are 1964 Cadillacs. I'm pretty sure the black on black convertible is a 1963 Caddy. The two door second from the bottom looks to be a 1966 Buick Riviera. Correction courtesy of Gaylord Wilshire, that is a Pontiac

The two station wagons are either Olds Vista Cruisers or Buick Sport Wagons (differed only in trim), probable 1964/65 models.
