https://www.losangeles.va.gov/images...es-558x389.jpg va.gov master plan to reshape the VA LA campus. Even now its a world-class medical center with a budget in the billions. |

I'll post a portion of the 1956 aerial later, but the configuration of the buildings on it seem to indicate that the Wadsworth buildings were razed to build the West LA VA. The Bentwood buildings mostly remain. I guess the difference between the two(other than still standing) is Brentwood is north of Wilshire and Wadsworth was south of Wilshire. |
:previous: Thanks for answering my question BillinGlendale. I appreciate it.
If I remember correctly, there's also a hazardous waste dump nearby (detritus from the hospital and labs). I'ii check Google-Earth to see if I can figure out where it is. |
Here's how the V.A. Hospital looked when it was known as the Sawtelle Veterans Home.
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/4kPU95.jpg wiki Most of the 1890s era buildings were demolished in the 1960s. I'm pretty sure we have seen this amazing photograph once (or twice) before on NLA. |

Here's two clips from the 1951 postcard that I believe shows the same building(circled in blue): https://i.postimg.cc/qqp1QgtY/Annota...-09-204430.jpgEbay https://i.postimg.cc/k4TS351L/Annota...-09-204637.jpgEbay It looks like all the 1890 buildings survived until the mid-30's, that's when changes started to take place(I think CBD's comment about earthquake damage is spot on). Here's the 1934 aerial, all of the 1890 buildings appear to be intact(I've circled the chapel in blue to assist in orientation): https://i.postimg.cc/CKLDvDJb/Annota...-09-210124.jpgFrameFinder Four years later in 1938, things have changed; the buildings that we see today at the VA have begun to be built and the 1890 building at the rear of ER's photo has been replaced. https://i.postimg.cc/GpG0582h/Annota...0606-north.jpgFrameFinder In 1947, after World War II, more of the 1890 building were razed and we are left with only the one building(in addition to the chapel and the library): https://i.postimg.cc/brX9FrZ8/Annota...0324-north.jpgFrameFinder Here's what it currently looks like: https://i.postimg.cc/k4HpM7Dh/Annota...-09-214442.jpgGoogle Maps ETA: I was focusing on the eastern side of the campus, it looks like two of the older buildings on the western side survived into the 1950's and are pictured on ER's postcard. They are not present in the current Google Map of the area. |
Name the Cars
Since you all did so well identifying the cars in the Hotel Cecil Parking Lot
I thought you might like to try your hand at identfying the vehicles parked at Elvis' rented home on Rocca Place. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/7HrqRu.jpg elvispresleypedia This photo looks like it was taken by some fan hiding in the bushes. From the looks of this next pic, Elvis needed a parking attendant more than the Hotel Cecil. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/vka5c5.jpg elvispresleypedia Again, fan in the bushes. And finally.....(here's the last one) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/vMUNmo.jpg elvispresleypedia Isn't that a horse trailer? some additional info: "Feb. 3, 1966 - Elvis arrives in Los Angeles and settles into his new home at 10550 Rocca Place in Bel Air, like the Bellagio house, is rented from Mrs. Reginald Owens." from elvispresleypedia Elvis also did some recording at this rental property. (mostly in 1966) I can't tell if the current house at 10550 Rocca Place is the same house shown in the snapshots. GSV _ |

We can see by the Application that there was a conflict with the price. Betcha it cost more than the $300K. Someone was maybe concerned with the new property tax:D:D |
