IMHO, the Petersen's façade looks like what it is: tacked on to an existing structure. That usually doesn't work regardless of the style (think all the classic DTLA buildings sheathed in mid-century modern sheet glass). If the façade was organic to the building, it may have looked better. Kind of looks like a melting roller coaster.

Looks like the facade of an older Vegas casino. Need some neon to complete the picture. But it is an auto museum, not the Louvre, so OK. If it were an art museum, different story.

It appears that a couple of additional companies have moved into the building. ...ARICAL...&...The John Clair Pictures Company.

And if you look closer there is a street number.

Curiously enough, this John Clair fellow is at least tangentally associated to a Marilyn Monroe grave marker. One of the original ones that was sold at auction in 2019 included 2 photos of him at her vault:

I was just wondering what any of your opinions are on the Petersen Museum design? Frankly, I don't know if I like it or not, really, but what I do know is that I don't like, maybe even hate these two buildings in the same photo. (Or in person.) It's like oil and water to me and I'm really repelled by it.

Also, in the above photo you'll notice Wilshire Blvd. looking a bit shabby...lots of work has been going on in Los Angeles along Wilshire and elsewhere with new subway construction...this intersection will have a subway stop on the Purple Line extension:

I agree with you MP--May Co & the current Petersen do not coexist visually very well together. The Petersen's addition of car-wash fins to the old Seibu/Orbach's department store was one thing, but as much as I want to like the current amusement-park tent cover--it reminds me of the "Wild Maus" ride--in the end it looks flimsy and temporary to me. Back to the future:

I find the photo of the infrastructure under the street more interesting than the battling facades. Those concrete knee walls between the utility runs are intriguing.

At first glance I thought he stuffed the flowers in his pants!...lol

. . .but, as you can see, he is standing behind some sort of speaker's podium. Do you think the photograph was taken so soon after the funeral that the podium just hadn't yet been removed? . . .or do you think an irreverent Mr. Clair brought the podium with him? (I think I see a pointer too)

Welcome to nla vexxedbystuff. :)

A small memory...June 1, 1992 (not long after the events of that April, which had delayed the trip): Went with a friend to Westwood Cemetery not realizing it was MM's birthday. At her crypt was a couple with a white van, who'd driven out from Indiana. They were dressed in some sort of costumes and toasting her with champagne being iced down in fancy bucket in the back of the vehicle. (I was actually surprised there wasn't something of a mob scene, considering it was the birthday...). I believe it was this couple who, good naturedly, told us that the owner of the crypt above hers--apparently a Mr. Poncher--had bought the space and left instructions to be buried face down. Probably an urban myth, but we were intrigued. Taken that day:

This is a new age. Its all about whimsical pasted on facades....the actual use of the building is totally irrelevant.

Where is Hugh Hefner's crypt in relation to MM...right, left, top, bottom? I see a couple of vacancies to the left. Joe D. left roses every day for her, but he is buried elsewhere, isn't he? I guess a Catholic cemetery. Catholics favor body burials, not cremations. Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?

I spent almost 8 years at nearby UCLA in undergrad and grad school decades ago, but never visited this place. A regret. I always told myself I would, but never did. Plus the departed don't often cross the minds of callow youth. There are other priorities. Now that I feel my mortality, I wish I had checked it out and thanked 2M. I might have even brought her a rose.

I fiddled with the contrast and size in hopes of being able to make heads or tails out of Clair's placard.

Can anyone read what's written on his placard?

I see the words. . .Monroe. . .Studio. . .Call. . .SerVice. . .

I think it's an advertisement for his photography studio....If it is, it's in extremely poor taste.

Perhaps he took that photograph of Marilyn on his placard. (it's from her last film, Something's Got to Give) -I should have said unfinished last film.

I'm beginning to think this John Clair fellow might have a few screws loose.

GW, I read that it's true that a man in Beverly Hills bought the vault above Marilyn (for a whopping amount) . . .

. .but when he died his wife thought otherwise. She sold it for $1.4 million dollars and paid off the mortgage on their HER Beverly Hills mansion.

...lol...smart lady

I'm guessing this estate is being built by the heirs of Max Factor.

"Among Max Factor's most notable clients were Mabel Normand, Ben Turpin, Gloria Swanson, Mary Pickford, Pola Negri, Jean Harlow, Claudette Colbert, Bette Davis, Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Lucille Ball and Judy Garland. As a result, virtually all of the major movie actresses were regular customers of the Max Factor beauty salon, located near Hollywood Boulevard."

Not likely the right place, but I found a 1959 Factor Residence off Mulholland in Sherman Oaks that has been extensively remodeled and expanded, so it doesn't look the same. And it is not in Beverly Hills.

I think our friend fullpower has this one identified correctly as the s.e. corner of Riverside and Fletcher....the curvature of Riverside to the left, the placement of the telephone poles, hillside behind the station are the clues....Arco has been involved with the site since at least 1930....

I'm not sure he's really at Marilyn's crypt in the pictures. I think it's a mock-up back at his "studio".

Is this also him in two more pictures e_r has posted?

Is this really how television shows were recorded back in 1962?...I thought the sound technician would be in a sound-proof room. . not on a folding table against the wall !

All the pictures feature well made signs and props so he's put some work into the really odd assortment of recreations.
