Thank you, HossC! I even remember that image that FredH posted...I can't imagine how I missed the Shane Building looming right there in the middle of the picture. I think I was fixated on the Supply Sergeant.

In my own search, I came across the following image at LAPL, which is rather absurdly dated 1955:

http://imageshack.com/a/img6/9070/s367.jpg
LAPL

It's captioned "Looking east on Hollywood Boulevard," presumably from/near Cherokee Ave, where the Shane Building is located. If I'm correct about the location, that Owl Drug is now the Geisha House.

I'm not entirely convinced I'm right, since there appears to be almost nothing to compare between the two shots (other than street alignment) but the search term that produced this was "Cherokee" so...?

(?) It is also a shame that the building has lost its distinctive gingerbread accoutrements. Not my particular favorite, but its significance is clear when compared to its current plain-jane attire. Then there was the Pasadena location, below (Colorado 3111)

I think it's the second location on your list, ie. 5901 W. Olympic Blvd. That address is now the black glass Olympia Medical Plaza, but a look around the back shows the building on the right of your photograph.

Here's the site in 1948, with W. Olympic Boulevard crossing from left to right. The service station was still there in 1954, but it was a parking lot by 1972.

Enjoyed this--especially the shot of Fort Moore Hill and the Pioneer Memorial.

I also enjoyed animatedmartian's video. One of the shots that intrigued me was the freeway sections going nowhere.

A quick look around, and I believe the unfinished sections are part of the Santa Monica Freeway where it crosses the Harbor Freeway.

By coincidence, I found the same intersection on the postcard below on Ebay last night. I think the date stamp (not shown) says 1989.

Nicely done. I would have guessed one of the other locations - due to "relatively" close proximity of the hills. The lack of intervening tall structures (landmarks) is both a blessing and a curse for this amateur geographer .

Address is somewhere around 2693 Glendower Ave. I'll have to stop by this place...I see new solar panels, rooftop patio, ubiquitous trashbins...but the little garage is neat.

Bad news is, looks like the building has been relieved of its Egyptian relief over the door.

:worship::cheers:

Had you been looking for it, or was this happenstance? In either case, thanks!

The structure looks quite contemporary. From my limited vision of the building, the Egyptian motif may have been secondary to any utilitarian aspects.

Good find. This is the first time I've heard (or seen) the old Cragar Corp. building.

I was looking for old pictures of Santa Fe Avenue when I found this. It's the Pennzoil Company warehouse at 2626 Santa Fe Avenue, taken in 1930. Look at that wonderful brickwork!

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...APennzoil2.jpg

Here's a close-up of the right side of the second picture which shows some of the building next door. It's hard to read the sign, but it says Gay Engineering.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...APennzoil3.jpg

Both companies appear in the 1932 CD.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...nzoilGayCD.jpg

Gay Engineering had a larger advert in the 1923 CD.

The Pennzoil warehouse is now a parking lot, but the majority of the Gay Engineering building is still there.

Here is another impressive building in the vicinity, this one is at S. Santa Fe Avenue and 49th Street.

Today, a victorian house on the corner of N. Ave 63 and Garvanza Ave., in Highland Park, was opened for viewing after a few years of massive renovation. I remember back in the early 90's as a kid, seeing the house covered in overgrown trees and it was just a mess, but i knew something beautiful was underneath all the overgrowth, so here are a few pictures of the house as of today.

Yes! I definitely remember this house. I used to come down from Pasadena to buy shoes at the Warehouse Shoe Sale across the street...when I was young and had nothing better to spend my money on, LOL. It was hidden underneath overgrown trees, almost all of the paint was worn off, and it looked downright scary. So good to know they've restored it. Looks great.
