Thank you, HossC! I even remember that image that FredH posted...I can't imagine how I missed the Shane Building looming right there in the middle of the picture. I think I was fixated on the Supply Sergeant.
In my own search, I came across the following image at LAPL, which is rather absurdly dated 1955: http://imageshack.com/a/img6/9070/s367.jpg LAPL It's captioned "Looking east on Hollywood Boulevard," presumably from/near Cherokee Ave, where the Shane Building is located. If I'm correct about the location, that Owl Drug is now the Geisha House. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/43/eip5.png GSV I'm not entirely convinced I'm right, since there appears to be almost nothing to compare between the two shots (other than street alignment) but the search term that produced this was "Cherokee" so...? |

Enjoyed this--especially the shot of Fort Moore Hill and the Pioneer Memorial. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-z...2520PM.bmp.jpg Re the memorial, a great post to revisit is this one: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=7581 (And a couple of other vintage NLA posts: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=1231 http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=1232) A few more screenshots from the video: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-o...2520PM.bmp.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-O...2520PM.bmp.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-X...2520PM.bmp.jpg |

I also enjoyed animatedmartian's video. One of the shots that intrigued me was the freeway sections going nowhere. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...ASMHarbor1.jpg YouTube A quick look around, and I believe the unfinished sections are part of the Santa Monica Freeway where it crosses the Harbor Freeway. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...ASMHarbor2.jpg Google Maps By coincidence, I found the same intersection on the postcard below on Ebay last night. I think the date stamp (not shown) says 1989. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...AFreeways4.jpg Ebay My previous post on "Crazy Freeway" postcards: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=16701 |

Nicely done. I would have guessed one of the other locations - due to "relatively" close proximity of the hills. The lack of intervening tall structures (landmarks) is both a blessing and a curse for this amateur geographer . |

:worship::cheers: Had you been looking for it, or was this happenstance? In either case, thanks! The structure looks quite contemporary. From my limited vision of the building, the Egyptian motif may have been secondary to any utilitarian aspects. |
I know that we have seen several atomic 'blast' photos on NLA but I don't remember this particular one.

It reminds me a bit (just a bit mind you) of this building at 2929 South Santa Fe Avenue. http://imageshack.us/a/img34/1808/j3h7.jpg GSV I believe that's a wheel/tire with wings above the doorway. http://imageshack.us/a/img132/5631/6fea.jpg GSV __ |
Also along South Santa Fe Avenue is this worse-for-wear building that must have been a showplace back in the day.*
http://imageshack.us/a/img546/4492/d2rp.jpg GSV *-we might have seen this building before on NLA. __ Imagine what it looked like before all the archways and entrances were stuccoed/bricked over and flags were flying on the twin flagpoles. http://imageshack.us/a/img46/2285/88ld.jpg GSV __ |

I was looking for old pictures of Santa Fe Avenue when I found this. It's the Pennzoil Company warehouse at 2626 Santa Fe Avenue, taken in 1930. Look at that wonderful brickwork! http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...APennzoil1.jpg http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...APennzoil2.jpg USC Digital Library Here's a close-up of the right side of the second picture which shows some of the building next door. It's hard to read the sign, but it says Gay Engineering. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...APennzoil3.jpg Both companies appear in the 1932 CD. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...nzoilGayCD.jpg rescarta.lapl.org Gay Engineering had a larger advert in the 1923 CD. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...gineering2.jpg rescarta.lapl.org The Pennzoil warehouse is now a parking lot, but the majority of the Gay Engineering building is still there. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...neeringGSV.jpg GSV |
:previous: Good find HossC.
Here is another impressive building in the vicinity, this one is at S. Santa Fe Avenue and 49th Street. I can't remember if we've discussed this building in the past. It's worth a second look. http://imageshack.us/a/img5/3638/l97r.jpg GSV http://imageshack.us/a/img856/7623/8o2s.jpg GSV http://imageshack.us/a/img7/2298/mwop.jpg GSV __ |
