Yes, Jax needs to move the convention center but it should not stand in the way of bringing back rail service to the old Jacksonville Terminal. There's already a plan to eventually bring Amtrak back. I assume, at a minimum, they'd dust some of this stuff off:

There's apparently funding in the transportation re-authorization to renew this service (east of New Orleans), but who knows if it gets appropriated.

Would be nice.

^There's an "Amshack" station about 10 to 15 miles northwest of downtown. The plan is to eventually close it and reopen the historic union terminal in downtown. The old passenger rail terminal already has a Skyway people mover station and BRT and local bus bays are currently being built around it (the Skyway station). If Sunset Limited is restored, it would join Amtrak's Silver Meteor and Silver Star trains in coming back downtown.

^I just wrote that for my blog this morning. If AAF is extended to Jax, they would most likely use the historic terminal shown in the rendering above. It's on the FEC. The current station is on a CSX line. However, I'm not sure the platforms will resemble what JTA has proposed for Amtrak. Nevertheless, the goal is to replace this station shown below:

"All Aboard Florida on Monday began construction on a rail repair facility that will service its Brightline trains when they begin shuttling passengers between South Florida and Orlando next year.

The facility, just north of downtown West Palm Beach, will be used to repair, maintain, clean and store Brightline’s trains, All Aboard officials said. About 50 people will work out of the 12-are site at 601 15th Street, which is also expected to serve as an office for the company’s conductors, engineers, and on-board service staff.

Crews on Monday, January 18, 2016 began vertical construction on a rail repair facility that will service All Aboard Florida’s Brightline.
Initially, five Brightline trains will be housed at the site, officials said.

“Every morning when the train services begin, the train will be leaving from this area,” said Adrian Share, Brightline’s executive vice president of rail infrastructure.

Crews for Archer Western, the firm selected to build the facility, started preliminary work at the site this fall. On Monday, the construction team poured the first batch of concrete in what will become a “maintenance pit.” The pit will allow Brightline crews to work underneath trains to perform required inspections and other daily service.
As part of the project, a warehouse on the site, which had previously been used by the Florida East Coast Railway, is being converted to offices, crew quarters and training rooms."

Brightline and Siemens announced today that the first stainless steel passenger coach car shell for the new train service has been completed, reaching a major milestone in the construction of the trains. More than 70 employees at Siemens’ state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Sacramento have worked on building this 85-foot long first coach car, using more than 50,000 welds to fuse it together.

Brightline Train Car Shell Exterior with TeamSiemens is employing first-of-its-kind spot-welding technology to build the stainless steel coach car shells and these coaches will be the only car-body with a flat sidewall of this type in the U.S. market. The completed coach shell will now go through a finishing process, preparing it for final assembly.

“With the completion of the first coach car shell, we are bringing our vision for a truly unique train service that will transform travel in Florida one step closer to fruition,” said Mike Reininger, Brightline’s president. “The Siemens team has been working diligently and we are thrilled to mark this milestone as the finishing of this car progresses and the manufacture of additional cars continues.”

This coach shell is part of the first of Brightline’s initial five four-car train sets that will each carry 240 passengers with more train sets to follow as the service expands.
“We’re thrilled to be marking this production milestone with the Brightline team and also recognizing the highly-skilled work taking place at our Sacramento rail manufacturing plant,” said Michael Cahill, president of Siemens Rolling Stock.

The Siemens Sacramento, CA manufacturing plant, which has been in operation for almost 30 years, is powered up to 80 percent by two megawatts of solar energy, currently employs over 800 people, and includes a recent 125,000 square-foot expansion to accommodate growing production needs. To support the skills needed for the advanced welding techniques being employed to build these train-sets, Siemens has launched a workforce development and training initiative partnering with local community colleges and the Sacramento Employment and Training Agency (SETA). Siemens has also developed a robust and diverse base of U.S. rail suppliers to support the next-generation of rail manufacturing for Brightline including components from more than 40 suppliers in more than 20 states with additional suppliers still being added.

Last week, Brightline poured the first concrete foundation for its Running Repair Facility in West Palm Beach, where the trains will be serviced and housed. Siemens will perform service and maintenance on the trains there. The facility is expected to be operation in August. Construction is also underway on Brightline’s train stations in Miami at MiamiCentral, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Orlando.

It's quite bizarre how the Governor of Florida Rick Scott rejected the HSR funds for Florida and basically gave our $2 billion HSR allocation to the CA HSR project , then All Aboard Florida has Siemens in CA build these trains for "BrightLine Florida"!

CA seems to win in both cases!
