And now this brings me to the next point. They may well be parked outside the west side of City Hall facing north now, away from the Times building, BUT that is NOT City Hall in the photo on the right as I originally thought. After all, I was searching on the Keyword "City Hall" Due to its position, it has to be the old State Building on the west side of Spring Street. Hadn't seen that many pix of the outside of State Building so Found this at LAPL, looking North also, but taken from where the new PAB now is (police admin bldg).

Looks like from this shot, the reason the foundation is still there is that they are still actively using the parking garage under it. Note the two cars going going down in curved driveway in this shot.

The only 'White Log' something I know of is the White Log Coffee Shop located at 1061 South Hill Street. This image is dated 1939.

Notice the font is the same in G_W's photo and the 1939 photo (small sign above Griddle Cakes), but the old police station was located quite some distance from the coffee shop on South Hill (and I believe the arrow in G_W's photo is pointing in the wrong direction).

My question is....was there more than one White Log Coffee Shop?

Against all odds the little White Log cabin built in 1932 still stands at 1061 S. Hill Street and is doing business as El Comedor Mexican Grill.

There were a number of White Log Taverns in L.A. in the '30s--not sure how long the chain lasted.

Interestingly, the White Log chain was statewide... a snippet from http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/:

"In 1930... Kenneth [Bemis] started a new restaurant chain in California called 'The White Log Taverns,' and just before opening his seventh restaurant in Berkeley, California.... As the chain developed to seventy-two units, within the next seven years, from the West Coast to Washington, D.C.,...."

From the George Mann Archives: Cruising the Coast Highway
 

Just posted on the On Bunker Hill time travel blog, the first in a series of circa 1954 vintage L.A. restaurant photos from the archives of 3-D photographer George Mann. This time, it's a virtual trip out to Malibu to view the famous seal-themed neon at Las Flores Cafe and some lost taverns, then back home via the Googie Penguin coffee shop as you've never seen it before. Plus some of the wild, hand-drawn signs which sat above the 3-D viewing machines in local restaurant lobbies. Hope you'll swing by and have a look.

The Ems is not new to us here, of course.... while I can't find the post (the "search" feature here objects to too-short words), it seems to me we were once speculating as to the origins of the name "Ems," ruling out "Emergency Medical Services." Anyway, as I am rereading my favorite book on Paris--Seven Ages of Paris, for me, the definitive book on that city in the way that Reyner Banham's Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies is for L.A.--something caught my eye. During a chapter discussing the buildup of Franco-Prussian tensions ca. 1870, the name of the German spa town Bad Ems is mentioned... hmmm. Could this be the origin of the name of Bunker Hill's Ems?

What I believe you are looking at is the SE corner of 1st Street and Hill. Under his butt is the intersection. This lot is currently empty and is waiting for the next Federal Courts building. The building (looks like a set of 3) just to the right of the end of the flag pole is where I am typing this from. The actor is hanging from whatever building used to be where the Stanley Mosk Courthouse currently stands.
