My take on Elvis's cars...

I thought you might like to try your hand at identfying the vehicles parked at Elvis' rented home on Rocca Place.

'67-8-9 Eldorado; '71-ish Lincoln limo with its headlight doors open...or maybe a '67-8; '66-7 Toronado; '67 full-size Ford; '67-8 Imperial

2 '66-7 Buick intermediate wagons--same A body as the Olds variants, but different front ends and other sheet-metal differences (one is the glass-roof version, the other looks like the less-deluxe Special Deluxe version); two '64 Cadillac convertibles, maybe a dark third unless it's a '63; second from bottom is a '65 Pontiac hardtop, and, nearest, what looks like might be a '61 or '62 Caddy convertible.... And it looks like a '66 Caddy might be in the carport at left.

re: Rocca Place rental home.
I thought it was a different house than the one that's there now. So thanks for proving me WRONG Noir Noir (with the permit) and CBD.

I can't tell who's right or wrong about the cars. As most of you know, I'm really really bad at identifying makes of cars.

That said...I do know the bus is a Vistaliner.

I like to outline things.

The front matches this one.

Not Rocca Place...but 1174 Hillcrest? Was that another rental?

(I believe Elvis owned, at point in time, two houses on Perugia Way) but I could be wong.

A glimpse inside Elvis' Vistaliner.

Here's one more....thankfully it's in black and white.

I'm not sure I'd sleep under that TV....especially on a bumpy road. It might come loose and...GOODBYE LEGS. :(

The Beatles met Elvis at his house at 565 Perugia Way, so you're not wrong. Just checked the view from the elevator lobby in my dorm had when I was at UCLA, looked straight at that house.

This photo of The Beatles visiting Elvis in Beverly Hills was recently posted on a site dedicated to '63/'64 Cadillacs I sometimes visit when I'm not here.

The Black '63 Caddy convertible could be one and the same.

I'm pretty sure the black on black convertible is a 1963 Caddy. The two door second from the bottom looks to be a 1966 Buick Riviera.

That looks like the iconic GMC SceniCruiser bus.....from the 1950s...but its a knockoff Felxible vehicle known as the Vistaliner.

We have seen a large number of photographs of the 1938 flood on NLA over the years.

This album of 23 snapshots has recently turned up on Ebay.

The seller only gives us a sampling of five. If anyone recognizes the location(s) let us know.

Does anyone know where Swift's Red Steer Fertilizer plant was located?

(obviously the byproduct of Swift's meat packing plants)

I think that the fertilizer plant is the large building at the center of this August 14, 1941 view, taken after the flood damage was repaired.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...rtilizers1.jpg
mil.library.ucsb.edu

The building is shown on the 1921 Baist map as Agricultural Chemical Works, which I assume got shortened to the A C W Fertilizers seen in e_r's picture. I can't find that company in the CDs, but Agricultural Chemical Works was originally listed at 905 Macy. Looking at Historic Aerials, the building survived into the '70s, and had quite possibly only just been demolished in the 1980 view.

The seller included 3- or 4-up views of many of the other photos if you scroll the thumbnails. Most show damage along the river, although one includes a sign for Grand Central Air Terminal.

I don't know how I missed those other pics Hoss.

Neat ol' Grand Central Air Terminal sign.

I remember a black and white photograph of a low flying plane going over this road.

Does anyone else remember that photo...or is it a figment of my imagination?

ethereal_reality Dec 12, 2018 1:12 AM

...another flood pic that I missed the first time around.

This snapshot reminded me of a couple gifs I had come across several months ago.

mystery object.

This postcard of Willard's was first posted [on NLA] over 8 years ago. (it was before we had honed our sleuthing abilities. ;))

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/snK282.jpg

What, pray-tel, is the structure in the distance that sort of looks like a pyramid missing its top.

Let's take a closer look.

If I'm not mistaken, we are looking south...and a tiny bit west. Correction: "we're looking north...and a tiny bit east." per GW

HERE'S A CLOSER LOOK.
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...921/048D1C.jpg

Any ideas folks?

Update:

While searching for past posts and info. on the Los Feliz Willard's I happened upon this 2nd postcard.that might be new to NLA.

Amazingly, the Willard's building, later a Brown Derby, still stands on the southwest corner of Los Feliz and Hillhurst.

GaylordWilshire first pointed this out HERE. GW also included a photograph of Willard's when it was a Brown Derby.

p.s. Don't forget about the mystery structure!

:)

I can't see the truncated pyramid, but maybe this July 18, 1928 view will help someone else track it down. I've arrowed Willard's on the corner of Pico and Beverwil. Another view from September 14, 1937 shows a few more houses.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...AWillards1.jpg
mil.library.ucsb.edu

Willard's is still listed at 9625 W Pico in the 1956 CD.

Well, ER, since this is the Pico/Beverwill Willard's, we're looking north...and a tiny bit east.... But I can't give you an answer on the Mayan pyramid

I got confused.

These were built circa 1930 - 33. Perhaps the picture quality plus the skewed angle of these houses to the camera is giving the odd shape in the original picture.

OK, I'll go ahead and post this because it shows the 1929 book that I mentioned above. (so why did USC date the photographs 1930?) *shrugs*

The Du Barry sign can be seen in the background, so I'm going to guess that we're looking at the Shell service station at 3325 Wilshire Boulevard (listed in the 1932 CD). That's the corner of Catalina.

Dick Whittington's envelopes (also part of the photoset) give the date very clearly as 1930.
