SAN ANTONIO │ City and Metro Restaurant Thread

To drum up some activity for the San Antonio forum, I thought I would start a new thread detailing the additions (and subtractions) of restaurants in San Antonio. Most of what I'll post will deal with the urban core but suburban restaurant news is allowed.

Should this be a sticky thread?

If anyone has any more ideas on how to get the activity back, please pm with those ideas.

Barbaro opened in Monte Vista (2720 McCullough Ave.) last week. It's a neighborhood pizza joint with a bar. By the same restaurant group that owns the highly acclaimed The Monterey in Southtown (1127 S. St. Mary’s Street). They also plan to open Hot Joy in the fall, in Southtown (1014 S. Alamo Street).

One Lucky Duck will open its doors August 19th at the Pearl (200 E. Grayson St., Suite 109.). This will be the first 1LD to open outside of NYC.

One Lucky Duck is a restaurant that specializes in vegan, raw and organic food.

Perfect timing for Restaurant Week (August 17th-23rd). One of my favorite times of the year in San Antonio. The lunch and dinner are both good deals but the lunches really are an amazing one! You can check out the menus for the different places, lots of places downtown.

I hope the threads start to get active too, was really enjoying all the information. When it started to die off I decided to actually register :)

In-N-Out coming to New Braunfels.

Just saw this on another site.

Site plan from the developers website shows proposed In-N-Out restaurant as part of the Town Center at Creekside development in New Braunfels.

In related news, I'm hearing rumors that In N Out will be within San Antonio by next year and the first restaurants will be in Leon Valley and at The Rim.

A new food and entertainment complex is opening on the near east side. To be called Burleson Yard. There will be a main house bbq joint. In the backyard: outdoor seating, a bar, ping pong court, concrete chess tables, bocce ball court, food trucks and a residential component.

This is just up the street from Boneshakers and the soon to be built Alamo Beer brewery and restaurant.

Looks awesome! I've always loved that building. Are those new lofts next door as well I see?

UrbanTrance Sep 7, 2013 1:04 AM

That looks like that'll be quite the destination.

A new restaurant called Mixtli will be opening up on McCullough Ave and requires you to buy tickets prior instead of reservations or just going there.

Two young chefs are less than a month away from opening a small restaurant with big ambitions.

Diego Galicia and Rico Torres are putting the finishing touches on Mixtli, 5251 McCullough Ave., in a one-time railroad car in The Yard.

The restaurant, whose name means “cloud” in the Aztec language of Nahuatl, will serve progressive Mexican cuisine. In practice, that means a modernist approach to ancient flavors and techniques.

The chefs are also are incorporating a ticketing system instead of taking traditional reservations or walk-ins. Diners purchase a ticket in advance for their meal, like buying a ticket for a concert. Dinner costs $80, and covers eight courses, beverage pairings, and tip. The system has taken off at places such as Next in Chicago and Trois Mec in Los Angeles.

Barraca - paella and tapas bar

There's another restaurant choice in Blue Star

There’s a new tapas restaurant open in the Blue Star complex. Barraca (1420 S Alamo, Ste 101) is a paella and tapas bar serving traditional Spanish fare like patatas bravas and piquillos rellenos. The Current loved Chef Javier Flores’ Cheeks and Chops food truck and has high hopes for this endeavor. I can count on two hands the number of tapas bars in San Antonio, and on one hand the number of good ones.

From a presentation at the Dignowity Hill Neighborhood Association meeting a few months back, the developer of Burleson Yard is going to first be a food truck court and beverage place with plans for some apartment units and a restaurant (in the older building) at a later date. He said 2015 at the time, but was still doing some preliminary planning. Go East side!

A luxury development on San Antonio’s Northwest Side is adding some neighborhood charm to its mix.

Éilan has announced a new venue, George’s Keep, which will occupy 3,027 square feet of retail space along the Terrace level of the development. That figure includes 1,500 square feet of exterior space that will overlook Éilan’s Piazza and the dancing fountains.

George’s Keep is the latest creation from Steve Mahoney, who also owns the Blue Box Bar at Pearl and the Green Lantern in the Stone Oak area on the city’s far North Central Side.

“We want George’s Keep to become the neighborhood bar for northwest San Antonio, and also be a destination for Éilan’s office tenants, residents and hotel guests,” explains Mahoney. “Éilan is definitely somewhere we want to be and we’re excited to be in the first wave of retail development at the property.”

The design of George’s Keep will feature a mix of European and art-deco influences. It will be an upscale, intimate venue, with some more laid back features of a neighborhood watering hole. The venue’s branded umbrellas, for example, will be the only signage identifying the bar.

George’s Keep is scheduled to open this coming January.

Designed with the look and feel of a Tuscan village in mind, Éilan spans 120 acres at Loop 1604 and La Cantera Boulevard, just a few miles north of the Loop 1604/Interstate Highway 10 intersection. The project features two office complexes, 539 multifamily units, a 165-room upscale hotel and spa, and 34,382 square feet of retail space.

George’s Keep joins Piatti, which will open at Éilan on Oct. 22. It will be the second Piatti in San Antonio — making the Alamo City the only market within the San Rafael, Calif.-based chain to have two restaurants.

It is the first of several stores to be owned an operated by Pat Hanlon and Tom McCarthy. The duo, who are also responsible for bringing Alamo Cafe to local diners

A second Salata is slated for The Plaza at Concord Park on San Antonio’s far North Central Side.

The CIA bakery will close this year. Their last day is Dec 20th.

Also closing is Boneshakers (near the Hays St bridge). Their last day is the end of the year.

The CIA Bakery is closing because the CIA needs to the space to expand their school.

Yep, that's what they are saying. I was trying to figure out what that means for the pastry students since it's my understanding they were going to take baking space on the second floor. Maybe they move those to where the store is? Either way, the bakery was always a favorite stop of ours when we came to town; so we're bummed.

Also bummed about Boneshakers. Cool little bar for local brews, also a good happy hour and decent pizza. The times we were there, only a few more folks were around. From what I understand there was a bike culture that supported them when they were south and you would think it would follow with the bridge nearby and all the things happening on Broadway, but I guess they were hidden or east side development was moving too slow.

We'll be in town at least once more before year's end and will try to visit both places before they go.

It looks like In 'n Out is coming to San Antonio. Word is they've bought or leased out a site at 29 NE Interstate 410 Loop. They will bulldoze the TGI Friday's that is currently there.

Edit: The TGIFriday's is still operating but will be demolished. My mistake.

Sweet! I live a 1/2 mile from that site. Looking forward to it.
