From 1929; these views have been unavailable since 1931, when the apartment building to the south, El Palacio, was constructed.

Has the EL PALACIO been discussed before on this thread...and the noirish event that occurred there in the 40's?

I don't think so Martin. Let's hear all the nitty-gritty!

I don't believe I've noticed the curtain around the driver before. Did Pacific Electric have something similar to this?

Georgette Bauerdorf: Murder at El Palacio (1944)

http://www.georgettebauerdorf.com/

This website features the entire noirish story better than I could tell it.
An oil heiress, a job at the Los Angeles Times, volunteer at the Hollywood Canteen. Dorothy Dandridge met her end here, too. Marilyn Monroe lived there for a time. Pier Angeli, also. And Lindsay Lohan.

The entire tale told on the website with these chapter titles:

Ch 1: El Palacio
Ch 2: Georgette
Ch 3: The Hollywood Canteen
Ch 4: Murder at El Palacio
Ch 5: The Next Day
Ch 6: Suspects
Ch 7: Postscript

Still unsolved.

That said, it's interesting to revisit the crime again.

ER. You've only made 5,000+ posts and you can't remember all of them. What's wrong with you? :D:D:D:D

After reading FlyingWedge's interesting post about the Chinese/Japanese Lotus Garden Apartments, I had a look around the area. Just along Fountain Avenue is a French looking apartment building.

Bing Maps

The sign outside names it as The Chateau Frontenac.

Neither Bing's Streetside nor Google's Streetview give a great view of the front, mainly because of the large tree. I did, however, find a better view of the sign.

It looks like it's been there a while, but I've had trouble finding out much about it. Google just wants to tell me about the more famous building of the same name in Quebec.

Of course, it's not the first Los Angeles apartment building to have that name. At random I looked in the 1942 City Directory and found a listing for the Chateau Frontenac Apartments at 601 Cloverdale Avenue. You'll now find the Miracle Mile Apartment Building at that address, but it looks old enough to be the same structure. The Googlemobile jumps over the vital intersection, but here it is on Bing.

There's another apartment building bearing the name Frontenac in the 1942 City Directory, and we've seen it before. It was at 212 South Grand Avenue. Being part of Bunker Hill, that building's long gone.

Alan Lum, I have his photo somewhere around her, was a celebrity in China Town. Amongst his businesses was a photo shop where you could stand behind plywood props where only your head would show, rickshaws, etc.. I attended several of his banquets at his restaurant for the Hop Sing Tong. I also attended his funeral sad to say. Those were the days in ChinaTown.

Yes, ER. Nearly all streetcars and buses lacking a closed operator's compartment have a screen behind the operator. It eliminates the glare on the front glass from the interior car lighting at night and helps reduce glare from the sun streaming in the front window at low angles. In later years curtains were replaced by roller blinds.

Cheers,
Jack

OMG, HossC, I walked by this building last night...in the dark!

One thing reading this thread has lead me to do is to actually notice the buildings and places that surround you when going somewhere. When I walked up to Sunset Blvd. last night I went down Fountain most of the way and I remember seeing this sign and looking at the building. What a coincience you posted about it! I also remember looking at the Villa Italia Apts., but I couldn't really see it.

-more information wanted.

Unfortunately, I don't know the name or the exact address of this noirish looking apartment building so my search capabilities are limited.
It seems vaguely familiar, so perhaps it has been on the thread before (years ago). I'm just not sure.

It's located on the north side of Wilshire Blvd. just east of Devon (Westwood)

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...911/P4NhL1.jpg

The building is L-shape so a good portion is hidden behind trees and shrubs on the right.
