Heh! So many of us with this problem and none of us saying anything, heh!
I also have the same, a Mac, running like yours, etc. I suppose I didn't say anything because, like others, I found another way to view them.

Thanks, Lomara, that was lovely. I didn't realize that stretch was quite so long! How long do they keep the lights up?

Great post unihikid! Thank you! I love that Christmas album...one of the classics. Did you see anything interesting on the train trip across the southwest?

It takes The Village

Thx e_r for the beautiful follow-up on The Village recording studios. It certainly deserved one. It's the neighborhood's secret glory.

The auditorium is said to be haunted by an unnamed ghost.

The Village has an extremely low-key presence in the neighborhood (probably best w/ that hostile-looking police station a half-block to the south). There is zero signage, except for "Masonic Temple" carved into the lintel over the Butler St door.

Because The Village and the adjoining post office (Barrenbrock & Murray, 1963) both fly the flag, many people think it's the P.O. annex, used as a sorting facility or something:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/qP...a9o=w1366-h768
gsv

Lots of folks would never guess how many world-renown artists have recorded in that blank-faced building w/ the great pilasters. Too long to post, an astounding partial list is here

The Village also handles film and television soundtracks.

That "awful cornice" kinda drives me crazy too. Did it once carry a frieze? I wish I could find a "before" photo of the lodge, but no luck so far.

P.S. Sorry everyone, my image host changed their format to WEBP instead of JPG. It'll get sorted out eventually.

Thank you FW, the Amor Arms (O.C. Willians, 1927) does have a crackerjack roof-top sign (and some nice brickwork too):

And Hollywood being what it is, the Amor Arms has had a more recent encounter with noir:
"Knife-Wielding Man Killed by Officers"

I love those tap-dancing "A"s:

Hey tovangar2, if you cut off the -rw-no at the end of your image URLs they seem to work properly in Firefox. I did that in your post quoted above and it shows up for me now - confirmation from others appreciated.

I think the king on the right has a chianti body.

John Maddox Roberts wrote in response:
The man in the light-colored suit is Warren Dorn, County Supervisor and former mayor of Pasadena. I knew him back in the '50s. His brothers Frank and Bob Dorn had homes in the Linda Vista neighborhood of Pasadena where I spent my summers back then. Their kids were my playmates. The LA County Board of Supervisors in those days were known as "the five little kings,"as they wielded almost unchallenged authority.
This photo was taken in 1959. The guy in the white suit was Supervisor Dorn. The guy in the black suit was an important person of another stripe: Frank "One Eye" DeSimone, LA Mafia boss and successor to Jack Dragna. He was being arraigned, 2 years later, for participating in the famous Apalachin mob conference in upstate New York. (I guess he was actually being arraigned for contempt because he refused to testify before a federal grand jury.) I'd be interested in learning why he was being escorted by Supervisor Dorn.

Remember that good guys wear white...bad guys wear black...easy to distinguish that way...

— several sources say the Beatles meditated in the large auditorium on the first floor.

More prosaically, the building was briefly used as a processing laboratory for color film.

If any one of you would like to make me really happy, find a photograph of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and/or the Beatles at this building.
I searched off and on all afternoon and found nothing.

info about the Beatles and film processing lab etc here:

I can't confirm the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's and the Beatles' connection to the Masonic Lodge. The Beatles didn't meet the Maharishi until Aug 1967 at the London Hilton and then traveled w/ him to India in 1968.

The Village only claims the Masons, the Moody Bible Institute and the color lab as the historical precedents at their address:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/cb...oIw=w1366-h768
thevillage greenbook

As for Maharishi Yogi, there's this (FWIW):

“My mother went to hear Maharishi’s lecture in Los Angeles, in 1959,” recalls Theresa Olson who was a 10-year-old at the time....

My mother, as a philosophy major, was enraptured. She learned after the lecture that Maharishi needed a house to stay in – so my mother didn’t hesitate for a second and invited him over to our place.“

Maharishi continued with his lectures on meditation, usually using a local Presbyterian church as his venue. Then, one day, he opted for something cozier.

Theresa Olson says, “My mom came home from work one day, and asked where the lecture was going to be that day. Maharishi replied, “Come, I thought of something better for today!”, and he took us to our living room. The heavy furniture – the sofas, the piano – had been pushed back against the walls and rows of folding chairs set up instead.”

That was going to be an established configuration in the Olsons’ living room for many years to come....

The house at 433 Harvard Boulevard turned into Maharishi’s US headquarters."

John, George and Ringo all recorded at The Village as individuals, although I haven't figured out in which years or found photos yet.

I suppose the Maharishi could have lectured in the auditorium after the building became The Village, with the Beatles in attendance (?)

P.S. (also FWIW)

George was there in April '86, working on the soundtrack for "Shanghai Surprise"

Ringo was at The Village in December 2001 for The King of Broken Hearts track from his "Vertical Man" album

433 N. Harvard made me think of another California bungalow I came across while snooping with the google-mobile.

This one is at 402 N. Windsor Blvd.

In 2007 the bungalow had a wire fence around it which led me to believe it was going to be torn down.:(

But in 2015...you can't see a thing from all the plants. (so of course I became curious)

Aerials show the bungalow is still there.

There's a noirish aspect too, relating to Swami Mukatananda (mentioned above)

In his teachings Muktananda put a lot of emphasis on sex - most of it negative. Curbing the sex drive released the kundalini energy that led to enlightenment.
The swami himself claimed to be completely celibate.

"Members of the guru's inner circle, however, say Muktananda regularly had sex with his female devotees. Michael Dinga, an Oakland contractor who was head of construction for the ashram and a trustee of the foundation, said the guru's sexual exploits were common knowledge in the ashram. "It was supposed to be Muktananda's big secret," said Dinga, "but since many of the girls were in their early to middle teens, it was hard to keep it secret."

"He had a special area which I assume he used for his sexual affairs. It was similar to a gynecologist's table, but without the stirrups." (To his later chagrin, Michael Dinga realized he had built the table himself.)"

unihikid, thanks for sharing your photographs.

So is this your cousin Erin Blunt?

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...923/FRUv6p.jpg
http://dickallenhof.blogspot.com/201...-team-set.html

When Blunt's mother raced him to the set of Paramount one day, Blunt says he was less than thrilled to learn there were auditions for a baseball flick.

"I'm like, 'Aw, man,' because at that time, I hated baseball. My mom says, 'Just go for the experience.' On the way there, she says, 'We need to buy you a baseball uniform?' I said, 'No.'
We get to Paramount. There's about 20 million and one kids, all wearing baseball uniforms," says Blunt. "Here comes this kid with jeans and a T-shirt, a hat on backwards, sitting in a corner.
I stood out obviously because Michael Ritchie came up to me and said, 'What's your name?' I said, 'Erin.' He said, 'You act like you don't want to be here.' I said, 'I don't. I hate baseball.'
He said, 'Good. I'm the director, and you just got the part.'"

cute story. :)
