The rendering looks like it's at 3-11 West 28th Street...

I agree, it looks like something Moshe would design. It does kind of look like a mess but It can turn out nice too. Will need to see it in better details.

In a way, its sort of has 56 Leonard in it. It appears to be tapered at the bottom and gets wider rising to the top.

The design itself doesn't look bad, but I would like to see something a little more "Gotham" in this 'hood.

Images of a mysterious high-rise project have been posted on the website of Architecture Work Office, depicting a balcony-laden 50-story residential tower that balloons in area as it rises.

The saddest part is that the design that we see would have easily allowed for the Bancroft Building facade preservation, with the narrow-base tower rising right behind it. This building massing would have been perfect for such a preservation.

Anyway, here is the site as of September 1st. The first half of the video shows the rubble lot that remains from Bancroft and the backside of 8-16 West 30th Street, which awaits demolition, while the second half shows the front facade of 8-16 West 30th Street.

New luxury condo is latest to liven Midtown’s NoMad district

Midtown South’s NoMad district at 30th Street and Fifth Avenue is starting to resemble 57th Street — with plans for three 50-to-70-story towers.

The latest is a new luxury condominium tower designed by Moshe Safdie that could soon rise mid-block between West 29th and West 30th streets on land just west of, and adjacent to, the Marble Collegiate Church.

The nearly 800-foot-tall, 64-story tower will be developed by Ziel Feldman’s HFZ Capital in conjunction with the church, a landmark that was built in 1854. The three church-owned properties — since demolished — were contributed to the joint venture.

HFZ filed with the city late Wednesday to begin the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission approval process, sources said.

The reflective glass skyscraper will have numerous outcroppings designed for interior space as well as shade. The limestone base will host church offices and blend into the historic neighborhood as well as the color of the landmark church.

A tree-filled public park designed by HW White is planned for a setback along West 29th Street next to the church, while the new tower is planned for West 30th Street. Its name and formal address haven’t yet been announced.

Feldman redeveloped numerous new and historical residential projects in the city, including the Chatsworth and the Belnord as well as new ones including a planned High Line project designed by Bjarke Ingels Group.

This will be the first city building for Safdie, a 77-year-old Israeli-born architect, although his design for Boston Properties was a finalist for the site of the current Time Warner Center.

Safdie is known for buildings around the world that include the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Israel, the Skirball Cultural Center in LA and the new Marina Sands Bay resort in Singapore.

I expected a supertall, but I'll be fine with an 800-foot tower if Safdie is truly building a landmark tower on this site. The rendering certainly looks promising.

Mods should change thread title to 800 ft.

Nice, 8-14 West 30th Street is being demolished too. Demolition permits were filed for the 12-story building last April, and an inspection was conducted three days ago.

And there's another large development site, just to the south, midblock between 28th and 29th streets. This neighborhood will have lots of modern spires in a few years.

So the Bancroft building was sacrified for a park.

No, it was demolished for an 800 ft. Safdie tower. There's no parkland on this site.

Looks like a more tame version of 56 Leonard (which is not a bad thing at all) and the Empire State Building is losing its complete dominance of this area of Midtown, it would be kinda weird (and cool at the same time) to go up to the observatory there in 10 years and have several tower looming over the view instead of looking down at the rest of the city.

I'm sure I'll get the usual "we're a living city, not a museum" responses, but it's a shame that the Empire State Building vistas won't be as prominent as they used to be. It has such an Eiffel Tower appeal to it right now. It's the building that defines NYC (in my opinion) and it's a shame it'll lose its prominence. Hopefully it never goes the way of the Chrysler Building which seems lost in a sea of boxes now.

This tower is being built right in the sight-line of the Empire State Building from places like Union Square and Madison Square Park - not something I usually get too twisted up about, but those are really exceptionally iconic and beautiful views. Seems almost tantamount to messing with the view down The Mall in Central Park or of the Statue of Liberty from Battery Park. The tower isn't an exceptionally nice view-blocker, either.

And yeah, the developers did bulldoze Bancroft for a cruddy little park. Thumbs down in every department.
