I agree, it looks like something Moshe would design. It does kind of look like a mess but It can turn out nice too. Will need to see it in better details.

In a way, its sort of has 56 Leonard in it. It appears to be tapered at the bottom and gets wider rising to the top.

The design itself doesn't look bad, but I would like to see something a little more "Gotham" in this 'hood.

Derek2K3 from Wired New York posted the bottom image years ago. I think that he runs 6sqft.com.

The saddest part is that the design that we see would have easily allowed for the Bancroft Building facade preservation, with the narrow-base tower rising right behind it. This building massing would have been perfect for such a preservation.

Anyway, here is the site as of September 1st. The first half of the video shows the rubble lot that remains from Bancroft and the backside of 8-16 West 30th Street, which awaits demolition, while the second half shows the front facade of 8-16 West 30th Street.

I expected a supertall, but I'll be fine with an 800-foot tower if Safdie is truly building a landmark tower on this site. The rendering certainly looks promising.

Nice, 8-14 West 30th Street is being demolished too. Demolition permits were filed for the 12-story building last April, and an inspection was conducted three days ago.

And there's another large development site, just to the south, midblock between 28th and 29th streets. This neighborhood will have lots of modern spires in a few years.

No, it was demolished for an 800 ft. Safdie tower. There's no parkland on this site.

Looks like a more tame version of 56 Leonard (which is not a bad thing at all) and the Empire State Building is losing its complete dominance of this area of Midtown, it would be kinda weird (and cool at the same time) to go up to the observatory there in 10 years and have several tower looming over the view instead of looking down at the rest of the city.

I'm sure I'll get the usual "we're a living city, not a museum" responses, but it's a shame that the Empire State Building vistas won't be as prominent as they used to be. It has such an Eiffel Tower appeal to it right now. It's the building that defines NYC (in my opinion) and it's a shame it'll lose its prominence. Hopefully it never goes the way of the Chrysler Building which seems lost in a sea of boxes now.

This tower is being built right in the sight-line of the Empire State Building from places like Union Square and Madison Square Park - not something I usually get too twisted up about, but those are really exceptionally iconic and beautiful views. Seems almost tantamount to messing with the view down The Mall in Central Park or of the Statue of Liberty from Battery Park. The tower isn't an exceptionally nice view-blocker, either.
