Building next door is now Mas Malo, a great mexican restaurant. Anyone know what it was 90 years ago..?

In response to this earlier post... my wife and I had dinner last night at Mas Malo, located at 515 W 7th. Food is just okay but the interior is worth checking out. The waiter told us it had originally been a jewelry store in the 20's and a lot of the original decor was still in place including old timey wall murals and large wood and glass display cabinets. The walk-in vault is now used as a wine tasting room.

Next go on Google maps and locate the junction of Soledad Canyon Road and Golden Valley Road. The siphon can be seen just to the west (left). You won;t believe how the view has changed!

Downtown is really undergoing a Renaissance. I was surprised at all the couples and groups walking around and just hanging out like it was the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Somehow we missed this impressive building on noirish.

I was a bit surprised that this building went up as late as 1926--the curved corner gives it the look of some downtown buildings 20 years older. Anyway, Louisianan Judson C. Rives was a well-known LA real estate investor--there is a Judson C. Rives Building downtown on Spring St. (originally the Broadway Central Building), and, as a matter of fact, he lived a block north of the Westchester apts on Westchester Place next to Alfred Rosenheim's house (the architect designed both houses). Fantastic! After 800 pages we finally get a good view of the original station from that side. Totally awesome.

This may be a stupid question, but what was this parcel of land back in the 1940s?
Is this the site of those iconic black and white images of Bunker Hill pensioners sitting on benches overlooking downtown?

I found a Burton's on York Boulevard in the 1952 Los Angeles Directory,but this image certainly looks like it was taken downtown.

This is very upsetting for those of us who live in Downtown. To top it off - they took away our best and only park that wasn't over-designed. Then they took away what little grass we had in Spring St Park. City Officials are still not urban minded enough, I question whether they ever will be in LA.

I wont quote it again, but in that colour shot of the Angels Flight station on the previous page, what is the building just at the right? is it a well known building and is it still there?

JoeGillis, it's the Metropolitan Water District Building, home of the Million Dollar Theater.
I agree, the color Angels Flight photograph was deceiving.

I've never noticed the color on the corner 'tower' before. I wonder if you can actually walk out on that balcony?
