re: original Los Angeles Terminal Market Drawing

"I have the original drawing by S.B.Z Del. It's 52"×26½" (pretty big) on paper.
Found in one of the original buildings of Los Angeles Terminal Market before being demolished.
The drawing is dated 4-6-27. It was locked behind glass (dual locks) covered in dust. Couldn't make out what it was from the outside.
I had it framed immediately."

Wow! what a find GW's friend. I'd love to come across a treasure like this. -glad you framed it for posterity.

A question: (of course)

What is the overly extravagant building (circled below)...a figment of the artist's imagination?

It's obviously a large hotel or apartment building. There's nothing like that in the area, right?

Another question:

As discussed before...I don't believe this elegant clock design ever came to fruition. (but it came close)

As a reminder, here's the clock it was going to replace.

A bit of info I discovered, just in case anyone is interested... I know ER liked the photo below quite a bit.

I spoke yesterday to my aunt Barbara. She was the wife of Jack Diltz, my late uncle, seen below with the hat and the dog.

Barbara confirmed that the Auto Wheel Cafe was in Thousand Oaks. She also said that the business was primarily a gas station. She said that the business had several bungalows in the back, and that they would rent them out to weary travelers.

She also said that the location no longer exists, as it was covered over by the 101 freeway.

This restaurant was apparently owned by my great-grandmother. Her name was Emma and our family name is Diltz. It was called the Auto Wheel Cafe, and she supposedly bought it some time in the 1920s.

There are six people in the photo, only four of which can be seen clearly. From left to right, my father’s cousin Bert, in the striped shirt; my uncle Jack, holding the dog; my grandpa Charlie, seated; and my father, Douglas, with his hands in his pocket.

I also asked her about the bar my uncle Jack owned, the Can Can, around 1960, which I mentioned a few pages back.

She said it was “just a few blocks away” from the world-famous Palomino Club - which makes it seem all the more strange that I can't find a mention of the Can Can anywhere I look.

I am reminded of the "rear" accommodations at another filling station with boys out front--the Richfield station at 5777 Hollywood Boulevard.... First mention of the much-hyped (at least in certain circles) Bowers fantasia Full Service on NLA was around the time the book came out in 2012 (starting with post 5971). Now that the equally hyped--complete with the dubious imprimatur of Vanity Fair--documentary of the tedious old goat is out, I realized that there doesn't seem to have been a mention here about the film--which insists, of course, that everything this guy claims is true. So I decided to check in with Larry Harnisch over at The Daily Mirror to see what he might have had to say about it. Harnisch's wonderfully skeptical Daily Mirror post of August 6 (which contains links to his 26-part takedown of the book) asks a good question, in characteristic style: "Have you seen even one photograph of him with one of his alleged amours? Scotty and Spencer Tracy? Scotty and Katharine Hepburn? Scotty and, well, any A-list celebrity, really? Rin-Tin-Tin? Trigger? Flipper? Nellybelle?" You do have to wonder.

I guess it was supposed to be something like a hotel or apt building, on Central Ave between 7th & 8th--so far I haven't seen another reference to it. Then there is the Federal Cold Storage building--depicted as being on 7th Street at Merchant or Kohler sts--looks like the one down at the SE corner of Vernon and Downey. We've seen it here before in this post of HossC''s from 2014, with more in this post. In the latter, there is a confusing image (second one below) from the LAT, 8-19-27:

I thought the photography, in the lower half at least, looked a little contemporary...

The LAPL dates it 1963, which was a tad confusing--but then I noticed the notation "Photograph was edited for publication purposes"....

ethereal_reality Aug 24, 2018 3:50 PM

:previous: Whoa! Good eye GW. I would have fell for it.

That's a sucky way of 'editing'. It is totally misleading, especially if the clock was no longer there in 1963. was it?

But I have to admit...someone was pretty handy with a x-acto-knife.

Well, now that I look again...maybe this image isn't manipulated...maybe the clock was there in 1963. Just noticing that the framework is attached to four corners of buildings...as in your images.

It seems that the inner sheds were built at the market not long after the outer buildings were built...you can see the clock on its supports in this UCSB aerial date Dec 15, 1931:

And images in historicaerials.com make it seem that the clock may have been in place as late as 1994--even 2004...

The clock above was at what-is-now the LA Wholesale Produce Market, which is west of S Alameda and north of E Olympic. The beautiful plans in GW's post show the Produce Terminal which was east of S Downey in Vernon. I haven't seen any pictures of a clock at the latter.

They didn't hang about building the Produce Terminal. Here's an aerial from August 1, 1927. Note the virtually empty lot above the Federal Cold Storage building.

Larry Harnisch is a skeptical man, and there's nothing wrong with that. You are, too, and I can see why you might be sympatico with Larry. It's good to have a healthy amount of skepticism. But I debunked one of Larry's posts with proof. He never acknowledged it or changed the incorrect assumptions he was making. (About a different subject.)

I also asked him a couple years ago if he might be able to come up with an explanation of what those boxes are on top of the Jade/Virginia building on Hollywood Blvd. and also my standard NBC Lobby Mural question and he said he would see what he could come up with. I guess he's still working on it.

By the way, if you were in a situation that relied on some secrecy, why would you take any photos? Except for that photo you posted above, which was never taken to highlight the gas station, can anyone find a good photo of the gas station? Obviously, photos weren't as ubiquitous as they are now and all that implies. Does it really seem improbable that if you were leading a life like Scotty Bowers, that you'd have photographers around? Or friends with cameras? Wouldn't you think that celebrities would find that a deal breaker?

I just googled Heidi Fleiss. The Hollywood Madam. Where are all the photos with the high powered celebrities she was involved with. (Supposedly?) I tried to find some. I found one. She was with Tom Sizemore (a good name for a porn star--Sizemore) and he also frequented for a time the place I worked at that I mentioned recently talking about Russ Meyer. I don't have ANY photos from my work experience of any of the people I've mentioned here before, either. So are you skeptical of my posts?

By the way, how do we know Scotty Bowers had sex with anyone???

Well, actually, since I mentioned it, in the documentary film there's some footage of Scotty in bed stroking his penis. It's somewhat pixilated. The film is not rated by the MPAA. It's NR.

And... Full Service is not a historically researched history book with exacted footnotes and copious lists of bibliographies, like so many who are criticizing it seem to think it is. (Which is how Harnisch seems to approach it.) It's a memoir. As such, I've read many "Hollywood" books from people who don't have exact times and dates lined up correctly. That doesn't mean what they're conveying is false overall. I mean, I just watched a movie that I thought was no more than two years old and it turns out it was made over 6 years ago. Oops. Caught me!

I know we're living in a period of "What you're seeing in the news is not what's happening" and "Truth isn't truth," but, for me, I am always skeptical of skeptics who are adamant that they alone have the answers.

MYSTERY LOCATION:

In some articles, maybe books?, I read about Sal Mineo, much to the consternation of Roddy McDowall (who I talked to on the phone once--but did not record it) who did not think celebrities like Sal should go out dancing with the boys in public, he used to like to go to a bar/dance club called The Comet. I have never been able to find anything out about where that was...not an address much less a photo much less even any mention of such a place.

Maybe someone here can?

You are right, Hoss--two completely different sites. I've always been confused by the Produce Market vs the Terminal Market. So was there ever a clock at the Produce Market, or only in the artist's head? Was it moved from one to the other? The other mistake I made was in assuming that the long building at the bottom of the drawing frame you've reposted was one of the three big buildings on 7th St at the Terminal Mkt--one of which was home to Bishop's foods, as seen in post 48247.

https://s22.postimg.cc/o8wey8smp/bishopfactory.bmp.jpg

:previous:

I also enjoyed Harnisch's takedown of the the various my-father-my-mother-my-wife-killed-the-Black-Dahlia books too. Actually, it sounds like you agree with him--that memoirs aren't necessarily the truth. Yes, I'd say Gore Vidal could be considered a leading American author, if not one of the immortals. Not a fan of his work (except maybe Sexually Speaking: Collected Sex Writings), but I was a little saddened that he felt the need to answer a solicitation to write a blurb for the Bowers book so late in his life. I'm always skeptical about what people so readily put out to strangers on the internet about their lives. Who isn't?

You didn't give a time frame or area, but the 1956 CD lists the Comet Club at 1651 Cahuenga Boulevard (just south of Hollywood Boulevard). From 1960 to 1967 it's listed as Club Comet. The 1968 and 1969 CDs have something called The Happy Hour there, and by 1973 it's Speak 39. Jump forward to 1987 and it's Hollywood Video. As you can see from the picture below, 1651 Cahuenga Boulevard is now Cahuenga Video (and has been for at least 10 years).

edit add, the exciting sequel: The two boards are probably ARRIVALS and DEPARTURES. On the right-hand board (DEPARTURES?), I think I see SANTA BARBARA as the first destination on the first line of destinations, and li'l old LOS ANGELES as the last destination on the second line of destinations.

edit add, here we go again: And the top line on each board I think says GREYHOUND BUS.

What do you all think...is this somewhere in Los Angeles?

Two of the possible addresses you posted were on Cahuenga Blvd. in Hollywood. Cahuenga is on a slight grade, but the street outside this bus station looks perfectly flat, so I think it's safe to rule those out.

(Some years back we had frame grabs from Stanley Kubrick's "The Killing" posted here showing the interior of the Hollywood Greyhound Station as it looked in 1956, but I'm unable to find that post.)

Here's an alternate enlarged view on the station board.
