I felt like I was in science class again after reading that. Interesting to think about though as it absolutely is right in the way of the sun for months of the year(during some hours of the day)

harryc Jul 8, 2017 10:57 PM

Shadow Pricing - NO . Even if it was a significant cost - NO.

The time of year when the sun would be a benefit (winter) is when the incident angle is the greatest, this is part of what makes it so cold up here.

Bombardier Jul 9, 2017 4:03 PM

Lots of parts delivered to the site today for the tower crane, it should start going up this afternoon and complete tomorrow if the weather holds.

Lol...

But in all seriousness, now I get why some of the gay members of our community have requested shots of the construction eye candy. That guy is ripped on a whole nother level. Probably pretty good workout to swing a 20 lbs sledge over your head while hanging halfway off a tower crane.

I mean, no. Go to a gym. There are a few superman/Thor/captain America looking fuckers at each one.

But as my cousin who works at a gym as a personal trainer said when I asked him if he was going to bulk up more. "Nobody is interested in a guy that's gotten so big he can't reach his arm around to wipe his own ass."

Oh no the grunting power-lifters are annoying. I used to lifeguard at a GB ymca, those tools would go in the hot tub. Same 3 guys for years.

No there are some Adonis/Amazon* looking guys/girls in each gym.

Uhh, Xena, Warrior Princess obviously! :haha:

Maybe you were thinking of Atalanta (person, not city in Georgia)? She was a famous heroine who performed feats of strength and refused to marry any man weaker than her, and hence never got married.

Hopefully the Ebony/Jet building and the lot next to it are the next to be redeveloped.

Didn't the city consider landmarking the Ebony/Jet building? Frankly, I think its hideous and redeveloping it would be a great idea, as opposed to keeping it around like an ugly birthmark on the face of Boul Mich.

Yeah they did landmark it back in March.....unfortunately

the urban politician Jul 23, 2017 1:03 AM

^ It's an important piece of Chicago history even though the building isn't that special. I think that counts for something

Put some memorabilia in a museum and raze it.

iirc, the stony island arts bank has most of its archives already... still, some of the interiors of ebony/jet maintain 1970s-era decor that few other places still have.

https://www.wbez.org/shows/wbez-blog...9-9aa99df0fb22

admittedly, the building's no looker from the exterior, but still...

KWILLSKYLINE Jul 23, 2017 11:24 AM

Screw it. Throw those interiors into a museum and tear it down. You know know some big name hotel will buy that property in a second and build a highrise. I'm looking at you mandarin Oriental. Plus that new tower and essex would stand spectacularly with the tiny college in between it. Then hilton can put a highrise up as well. Sorry, im writing myself into a daydream.

My goodness, those interiors! I hope the interiors never change.

I think this building would look a lot better if it had a neighbor to the south. The semi-exposed cinder block wall is the biggest problem to me. I would enjoy seeing a tall tower alongside to fill in the gap. That would help emphasize the horizontal lines and clean look of the exterior.

spyguy Jul 23, 2017 5:59 PM

The interiors are amazing and would be great to preserve. The exterior I'm no huge fan of, but there is history there...

830 S Michigan (old YWCA) should be a prime development site.

The amount of times that Chicago has shot itself in the foot by losing such wonderful architecture is infuriating.

It's a damn shame. The Chicago Federal Building 😫

But the collective loss of all the brownstones and greystones, and even just brick 3 flats, is greater than any one great demolished building.

At least with the loss of the Federal Building we got Mies' Federal Plaza which, arguably, did more for architecture and Chicago.

I'm not necessarily against losing some of these old buildings if we replace them with similarly impressive structures.

Mr Downtown Jul 31, 2017 2:28 PM

Some confusion here. The building at 830 S. Michigan was the YWCA, not the YMCA, which had the huge building at 9th & Wabash (now Burnham Park Plaza).

Park Michigan proposed saving only the front 40 feet, a mere façadectomy.

FYI, these buildings still exist. On the left is the Central YMCA, 19 S. Lasalle, on the right is the National Life Building, 29 S. Lasalle. Both were designed by Jenney & Mundie. Since this post card 19 had it's top floor replaced by 3 floors without the mansard roof and 29 had it's entire facade renovated by Holabird & Root in the 1940s.
