Someone cue the bananas... caisson mobilization will take place this week with drilling occurring next week.
|
Drilling caissons will begin on Monday if someone would like to stop by and take a some photos.
|
I passed the site on the bus this morning. Caisson drill is there and set up; it looks like it was active, but in that short time window I didn't see any spinning motion so I can't say for sure.

Ditto... just saw a glimpse from the green line. |

Drilling has commenced and the temporary casing for the first caisson has been set. This project is officially under construction!

I dont know how to put bananas up so here's my invisible one dancing.

^^^ I was there during lunch - BVic's shot shows the drilling rig fully assembled, after work ?

Are they allowed to park concrete trucks on michigan? This is a tight site with a small alley. It will be fun to see how they coordinate everything going on at once.
|
Concrete operations will be on 8th street for the structure. Major deliveries and skip hoist will be on Michigan.
|
A few pics of the site today, from my room at Essex on the 8th floor :) Sorry for the glare

Caisson installation is wrapping up tomorrow on this one. Sheeting and excavation will start this week. Tower crane should be up by the end of June.

So this ones about to go vertical? Always good news.

![]() ![]() Odd that the big caissons appear to be right outside of the mat. ![]() ![]() and one from last month ![]() |
^^^ Could be that the big sheer walls they show projecting on the exterior sit right on top of the main cassions. Would be a little less convention, but totally feasible to build a building that has a few large sheer walls carrying a lot of the weight instead of the core which is what we usually see.

Crane base in place.

BVictor1, Nice photos! There is a 950 CY concrete pour scheduled for Friday (pending weather). If anyone can stop by for some photos, there should be a lot of activity. Tower crane will be set by end of next week.

Pour is off for tomorrow on account of the weather (yesterday was lost). Looking like Monday if anyone is downtown...

Seasonal Loss of Radiant, Solar Thermal Energy at the Conrad Hilton
Perhaps this issue for structures located in the mid to higher, northern and southern latitudes has already been resolved before and or elsewhere, but I have been reviewing a rendering of Essex on the Park (Chicago Architecture, 2017) and curious if the voluminous Conrad Hilton is in a position to pass on additional heating cost incurred during late fall to early spring months because of the new Essex on the Park.
http://www.phisicalpsience.com/publi..._08jul2017.jpg I ask, as the Conrad Hilton since the time it was constructed, has for the most part, been receiving ~1.37 kW/m^2 of radiant thermal solar energy, minus adjustment for the Sun’s incident angle that post construction will no longer receive, the Conrad Hilton being in the shadow of Essex on the Park. Yes, radiant, solar thermal energy is loss on cloudy days, but such losses are "force majeure" events, where as the loss radiant energy from the rising of Essex on the Park is of an "engineered nature". Yes, the new structure will provide very brief, partial coverage from solar radiation in the summer. However, the most taxing times of the year for HVAC systems is when the Sun in the northern hemisphere at noon is at a low incident angle relative to the zenith, resulting in short shadow lengths, the Sun being ~19 degrees from zenith near the summer solstice. The building Essex on the Park during the winter season because of the Sun's ~65 degree incident angle with the zenith at noon, producing a very long, encompassing shadow over much of the volume of the Conrad Hilton and other lower structures in the vicinity.
