I always liked looking at this building going down Sunset Blvd. It always looked a part of the landscape and nicely designed. My memory of it is that it was always painted in what I call an art deco green color, a little darker than it looks in the Bug Music photo. "If memory serves" one must say sometimes. I was looking for a photo of it as the Screen Actors Guild in color, but I'm having trouble finding one. I did find this interesting one of the building from a sidewalk view if you were walking by. I guess I never "walked" by there! https://calisphere.org/clip/500x500/...ebecf88fc77ff4UCLA Library The photo must be from 1956 because it's noted in the caption that the building "is brand new, dedicated only last May 25." And speaking of being dedicated, the SAG-AFTRA website has these photos of it's dedication. Guild officers, left to right: Treasurer George Chandler, President Walter Pidgeon, George Meany, 2nd Vice President Dana Andrews and 1st Vice President Leon Ames. (Also in attendance were Los Angeles Mayor Norris Poulson, California Governor Goodwin Knight and Monsignor John Devlin.) http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/...psab55c68e.jpgSAG-AFTRA With Guild President Walter Pidgeon, AFL-CIO President George Meany dedicated the new Screen Actors Guild headquarters at 7750 Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles. http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/...ps083997fa.jpgSAG-AFTRA And an architectural rendering of the building. http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/...psd084d909.jpgSAG-AFTRA |

Agree with your thoughts about the SAG building. Part of the AFL-CIO -- No wonder Meany was in the dedication photos! SAG was in the Sunset location for 20 years and before it moved to the Prudential Building (Museum Square, 1993-2012 merger, renamed SAG-AFTRA Plaza, 2015) when it moved into the Hollywood Congregational Church from 1986-1993 at 7065 Hollywood Boulevard. https://www.sagaftra.org/sites/all/t...churchbldg.gifSAG-AFTRA It's also noted that the church location was diagonally across Hollywood Blvd. from its 1938-1956 location, 7046 Hollywood Blvd., and just up the block, on North Sycamore, was Masquers Club clubhouse, from which the Guild sprang in 1933. Thanks for The Welcome
Hi ProphetM & Etherial Reality,
Thanks so much for the warm welcome from such amazing experts on LA! I imagine there are lots and lots of us of avid lurkers here who read every post who are part of the Norish online community. To answer your question about Huntington Beach versus LA: Yes, it was as if, in addition to Disneyland, between Orange County (we never called it THE OC, ever) and greater LA there was a an invisible psychological barrier. Many in HB disliked 'Hollywood types,' the immoral and creative LA. In Huntington Beach in the 60's, the surfers were called 'beach bums' and scorned. My family lived around the corner from here in the exploding track homes thanks to VA funding. A few months previous the whole area of HB was nothing but fields of vegetables: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4247/3...78b34d7c_o.jpg In HB there were lots of conservatives and military contractors and government workers who worked for all kinds of secret government projects. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4201/3...9f5a2783_o.jpg My Dad worked for NASA on Apollo. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4226/3...281f5bd1_o.jpg I went to a brand new 'Sputnik School' where we learned something called 'New Math.' One family out of a 100 were California natives. When the rolling smog eventually appeared, it was as if the great cultural divide was breached about the same time 'Laugh-In' became so popular. It signaled LA's liberal culture was winning the 1960s culture wars. Suddenly surfers were celebrated and would become the economic center of Huntington Beach, and us kids from HB had long hair and listened to rock and roll. Regards, HBKid Quote:

The photo is also here, sans watermark. That's a nice shot of Whitley and Hollywood that you posted. Whatever did happen to those pillars? I'm reminded of when this was Gene Hackman's character's offices in "Get Shorty": https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/K3...Q=w751-h587-no gsv The Re-Tan Hotel is still there (including neon) along Whitley, as are the 1919 frame buildings to the south of it: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Hy...w=w517-h587-no gsv And that other image catches NBC's best profile. It was lovely from that angle. |
I just checked past posts that mention "revelers", and I didn't see any mention of the Revelers' Club.
As you can see, this item is from the April 7, 1927 issue of Hollywood Vagabond magazine. The subject of the article is a proposed chateau-like Revelers' clubhouse in the Hollywood Hills. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/TYkTKm.jpg https://archive.org/details/hollywoodvagabon01vaga http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/MiAJ2s.jpg https://archive.org/ Was anyone aware of the Revelers' Club organization...or their grandiose pie-in-the-sky proposal? _ |
"Chorus girls at Harry Carroll's home in Santa Monica, 1929" (I wonder if they really meant Earl Carroll instead of Harry)
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/0hAa6e.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-q355rVE3nr...%252C+1929.jpg my eye gravitated to the girl second from left. (that's a nice chest)_______if I was into that sort of thing. ;) the middle girl is quite vexing as well. (& I think she's trying not to be the tallest) ____ I thought "Harry" was holding booze http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/Ioj0S4.jpg but I'm pretty sure that's vinegar! __ update: If you look closely a 'Harry Carroll' owned this place next to Republic Studio. (same guy?) 1942 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/eJEWJ0.jpgdetail Tourmaline first noticed 'Tin Pan Alley' here: http://skyscraperpage.com/forum/show...ostcount=22968 and I believe that is the only time Harry Carroll has been mentioned on the blog. Vinegar isn't the only mystery. Why is Harry dressed for golf at the beach? Plus-fours and golf shoes (note the spikes on the soles.)

Here's another from that same romp. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/RgI2CU.jpg https://www.flickr.com/photos/michae...n/photostream/ Michael_Ryerson I'm pretty sure the photos originated from USC archives. (I believe there are a few others) note that there's another gentleman dressed for golf (maybe he stopped over after a golf game with Harry) Does anyone know where Harry Carroll's house was located in Santa Monica? __ Thanks for the info. tovangar2 and CityBoyDoug |
update: I just found the other photos.
Here's the link http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/co...id/12615/rec/4 I believe this is the "second girl from the left" from the photo I posted last night. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...923/LkOWWu.jpg usc archives Yep, that's HER. ;) Later, Harry exchanged his golfing attire for a swim suit. (or maybe it was the other way around) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/qERc6R.jpg usc archives [cropped] check the archive for the complete photo. In a couple of others photos Harry has a pet monkey. __ I was hoping the invoice might have Harry Carroll's address in Santa Monica, but it doesn't. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/GTtZmq.jpg usc archives |
