From planes to trains: Robert Crandall joins opposition to All Aboard
1) Not to play ‘battle of the modes’ but I don’t know what it is about passenger rail that seems to drive some people crazy and mad. Unfortunately, passenger rail investments have become another of the ‘cultural war’ issues.
2) Bob Crandall is a smart person—I don’t know what is so difficult to figure out that a large part of the business case for the All Aboard Florida rail project comes from real estate development at the stations and land surrounding the stations. Florida East Coast Industries, which is building the rail line, is a large, savvy, real estate developer and is developing large plots of land, including in downtown Miami, around most of the stations that it owns. Mobility and increased connectivity greatly enhances land values. Mr. Crandall likely only sees this as a transportation investment and not as a significant real estate play. At a Transportation Research Board session a few years ago, I heard one of the executives from either JR East or JR Central in Japan note that something like half of the company’s revenue comes not from the rail operations but from the real estate development. From planes to trains: Robert Crandall joins opposition to All Aboard Palm Beach Post May 22, 2015 "Robert Crandall was a titan of the airline industry in the rollicking days of deregulation, and at 79, his heart still pumps jet fuel. Today, though, he's got another transportation project in his crosshairs -- All Aboard Florida's $2.9 billion express passenger rail. Crandall, a winter resident of Palm City, is on the steering committee of the anti-All Aboard Florida group Citizens Against Rail Expansion. When he joined the opposition, it bolstered the rag tag effort of grassroots organizers who were taking on All Aboard Florida..." http://www.bloomberg.com/research/ma...S_4745_32454-1 |
So an old fossil uses his money and influence to try to prevent progress. The airlines themselves, of which he was a part of, have sown the seeds of competition. People are increasingly growing weary of the misery that has become of airline travel, and increasingly crowded highways are doing likewise. This project is developing because there is a perceived increasing demand for a transportation alternative over a moderate distance that is more hassle-free. It will certainly be time competitive.
It is too bad that we don't see these influential people provide a better vision, but at that age, perhaps, there is no vision left. At this point, the only immediate action is what he can stop from happening. It is pretty sad. Let's face it, North America was at the forefront of transportation in much of the 20th century but now the auto age is starting to pass, and North America will increasingly fall behind if projects such as this don't get off the ground. |
I probably know the answer already, but will SunRail provide a local connection to this project when it opens? It seems to me that a local connection to the downtown area will be extremely useful.

I'm still skeptical but AMT intends to break ground this summer on a 13.7-mile privately funded maglev system that would connect the airport/AAF to Florida Mall, the convention center and the I-Drive corridor. As for Sunrail, it's possible that it could be extended to the airport's terminal but that would require additional cash from the state that's not been earmarked at this point.

the Sunrail expansion to the airport arrives from the south the maglev arrives from the north connecting to airport station. |

Nobody's built a maglev system in the US yet, so this would be the first. |

It's essentially a train with the "maglev" on the actual rolling stock, not the track. It essentially just uses magnets to operate the motors (with an onboard capacitor, I imagine) to move the train along the tracks...however, the train sits upon the components, so it isn't being levitated. http://static1.squarespace.com/stati...g?format=1000w *I think it's a really clever idea, and is a much better alternative to using rubber-wheeled trains. It also should save on cost, as the tracks are essentially "dumb." |

better shows the expansion area, isnt this where the supertall is?? |
three questions:
1) the tri-rail extension to pompano on the SEC tracks, are these the same tracks that AAF would use until the junction? if so, hm. 2) how likely is it that the tri-rail funds will come through? and is it possible that miami is negotiating with them to tie their portion of tri-rail funds to the air rights issue? 3) do we know what portion of the AAF tracks will be elevated like they are at government center? great news all around. looks like a fantastic project and that extra tower they've just proposed will be another great addition to the area. it's hard to imagine what miami could look like in 2020, with the station complex, the innovation district, the sky tower thing, the huge mall between the station and the water, and everything else in brickell as a matter of course. throw in the stadium, metro mover extension and who knows what else (genting development?) and it's pretty staggering. downtown miami is pretty much a massive parking crater wasteland, would be amazing to be able to walk/metro move between actual neighborhoods. |
