Good to see that Phoenix is doing something to address the homeless problem. It's not beautiful, but at least they'll have a roof over their heads at night.

It's in reference to the Way Cool Hair house that's being (or was) demolished.

^That. No real details just that a David Bernstein and Associates out of LA is developing that lot.

The house has already been demo'd. However, the developer may see themselves in a fight with local preservationists. According to the City of Phoenix, proper demolition permits were not filed or fully completed when the house was demolished. The developer also sped up the demolition schedule when they got wind there may be a temporary halt pursued by the RAA and animal-rights advocates which really upset some people. Basically what the developer did was very similar to what Empire did with Circles and we all know how long that delayed everything.

So, if what I am hearing is true, it may be a while before this moves. I just know that the neighborhood is not happy with this.

Yeah sorry dude, that was sarcasm. I did watch a fun HGTV show about a lady that built a custom home from shipping containers in Tampa. The finished product was nice on the interior, but the exterior was a sort of like a WTF moment. Why would you spend $250,000 to live in this? I don't get it, but maybe it's the cool thing for millennials?

At least in ten years it won't cost much to demo and build a mid-rise in it's place. Anything is better than a vacant lot I guess.

Construction has started on the apartments at Osborn and 7th ave. Also I saw some of the exciting tenants coming to the rehabbed shopping center next door....including Sprouts, Starbucks, Orangetheory, a nail salon, Jersey Mike's Subs and Jamba Juice- still space for two more tenants.

A Los Angeles builder has bought land in downtown Phoenix with plans for infill housing.

Daniel Bernstein & Associates bought just under half an acre at First and Willetta streets on the north end of downtown Phoenix just south of McDowell Road. The land is north of the Burton Barr Phoenix Central Library and along Metro light rail.

Phoenix Partners on Willetta Street LLC, an affiliate of Daniel Bernstein, paid $1.1 million for the property. The seller was PSB Futures.

Daniel Bernstein & Associates bought a small adjacent parcel last year. The San Fernando Valley-based builder did not respond to requests for comment on its plans for the land.

Justin Cirell, vice president with R.O.I. Properties, helped to broker the deal and represented PSB along with Beth Jo Zeitzer. Cirelli said DBA is planning a residential project, possibly with some ground-floor retail.

“It’s going to be residential,” he said.

The parcels are adjacent to a new apartment development under construction. The Willa is a 229-unit apartment complex being built by Tilton Construction, Hunt Cos., Civitas Capital Group and Ryan Cos.

The Bernstein company has a number of infill housing developments in Los Angeles.

There are a number of new infill and multifamily housing developments either finished or under construction in downtown and midtown Phoenix along Metro light rail.

Valley Metro CEO Scott Smith said at a recent transit conference the light rail system and its link to jobs in downtown Phoenix and Tempe has helped spur more housing along the line.

Interesting quote...would hate to see it razed. Would love this building and the next door county building to be preserved some way. And the latter to be renovated in some fashion...the rock exterior has got to go lol

I hope Sing High gets passed down to another owner, pretty much the last relic of the old Chinatown. Not to mention, 90 years is ancient history in Phx, we've already lost Monti's to a developer with a twinkle in their eye and empty promise, would hate to see more history close prematurely.

That NYT article contains a photo of Christine Mackay's window with notes. Among the notes is a mention of current & upcoming RFPs for the Phoenix Central Station, Knipe House, Los Olivos Park, Rio Salado Redevelopment, Gravel Pits (the ones SW of Sky Harbor?), and a few other things including something at 19th/Camelback, possibly regarding that empty lot at 1701 W. Camelback? Everything on that corner is owned by a C17 Holdings except the tiny lot right on the intersection.
