Are they supposed to be able to change color or something?

Anyone know if this is still partially opening this month?

^ Good question, because PA currently appears to have enough regular and ICU beds.

Partly operational:

From Billy Penn:
https://billypenn.com/2020/04/28/pen...cept-patients/

This will take non-COVId patients, if room is needed in the main hospital. Which at the moment it isn't.

There's still a huge amount of auxiliary and grouns work to be done. I believe they're framing out a bit more of the building with steel that will have a terrace on top iirc. Two skybridges are being installed now, but I believe there's supposed to be a whole skywalk to the train station as well. The bulk of the skyline visible work is coming to an end though

Yeah I spent a few days walking through this building in September and it has a LOOONNNGG way to go in terms of much of the interior construction work. Late 2021 it’ll be open. Building is pretty cool though, will be the most sophisticated hospital space in the world when it opens.

Do you know anything about the areas that were 'finished' to treat covid patients, did that ever open? Other then alot of the patient rooms being flexible, what does sophisticated mean when it comes to a hospital?

Remember back when Penn announced this site as the location for a new stand alone building, we all talked about it maybe being the worlds tallest hospital. Oh well, it's turning out Ok, certainly better then its weird older brother across the street (and over a couple of bridges). I'm still not sold on the change of window height on the nose and tail, the rounded ends; it just doesn't look very refined. Maybe someday Lord Foster will give Philly one of his first rate designs, something cutting edge.

What plans does Penn have to their older hospital buildings along Spruce St?

Only until Jefferson buildings their exorbitantly expensive building at 11th/Chestnut.

That will be an out-patient facility, not an in-patient hospital like Penn's New Patient Pavilion.

Seems a bit premature of a post since I think it's slated to open in the summer, but interior work is definitely in progress. Recently there has been a lot of progress on the skybridges, and it looks like they're going to do some reimagining of the facade on the old hospital where the bridge is connecting over the old ED because there is a steel skeleton attached around the connection. Once the ED moves, I imagine they'll bring the wall down to the ground to create more rooms where ambulances currently park

So there's some oddities going on in the back (river side), and I'm wondering if anyone knows what's going on. It looks like there's an extra floor that wasn't in renderings before. It's being clad with (for now?) non-matching black, and meets the main building mass awkwardly. Some other flat/lighter color (and cheaper looking) metal cladding is showing up around it too that looks more like the accent color around the vertical window strip. It looks kind of cheap and out of place, like they ran out of their primary cladding material
https://i.ibb.co/dpMpj9v/IMG-20210306-151859-50-01.jpg

All sorts of weirdness here where it meets up with the rest of the building. The windowless metal cladding was originally supposed to curve in here.
https://i.ibb.co/3C3Ky19/IMG-20210306-151631-50.jpg

Compared with the virtual tour (it's hard to find other renders of this angle):
https://i.ibb.co/k44qRPQ/Screenshot-...-203007-01.jpg

Anyone have any info on a design change?

TonyTone Mar 7, 2021 1:56 AM

Wow thats a whole extra floor, interesting. That was probably a approved design change right?

They didn't mess up and add an extra floor did that :D:haha:

https://i.ibb.co/GsVbj06/IMG-20210309-151719-50.jpg
Well I got the cladding answer already lol. It looks like the windows are getting kind of screened over. There's even a smaller second floor on top of that! I wonder if either are possibly mechanical or something.

summersm343 Apr 21, 2021 3:16 PM

Anyone have any updates on this one? This has got to be complete by now - no?

PurpleWhiteOut Apr 21, 2021 4:46 PM

No, still a lot of miscellaneous exterior work left between missing cladding and not even starting the ED ambulance bay, and lots of interior construction lights. Probably a couple months left at least.

Construction of Penn Medicine's $1.5B Pavilion nearing completion

https://www.bizjournals.com/philadel...-pavilion.html

Quote:

Penn Medicine broke ground on the Pavilion in 2016 and it is on track to open to patients Oct. 30. The original occupancy date had been set for early June but was delayed because of the temporary shift to completing beds for coronavirus patients. The project is also on budget and has experienced virtually no supply chain issues or unexpected material costs.

“We have been lucky,” said Greulich, who has overseen the project for the last seven years from when it was just being planned by the health system. “We made decisions early in buying steel and aluminum and we are past those issues when it deals with supply chain.”

While the project, the largest undertaking by Penn, is nearly done, there’s still work that remains over the next several months. Each day, about 700 construction workers are on the job site. About 75% of the interior of the building is complete and there’s site work such as cleaning up the sidewalks, paving and landscaping that still needs to be done.

The process of bringing in and installing all of the building’s furniture and equipment is also scheduled for the next few months. The building will have 504 private patient rooms and 47 operating rooms.

IIRC they’re still doing some work at ground level. The tower portion was expedited because of COVID. It was used as extra bedding in the beginning when hospitalizations surged.

Is it ready for renovation yet? Hospitals seem to always be changing something around.

Yeah they're doing some hardscaping. You can see it easily out of the Ravdin building but it didn't feel appropriate to take photos from occupied patient rooms :haha:
