Chicago isnt impressing me these days. We need at least one 1000 footer. No ones brave enough to propose one.....

Chicago_Forever Nov 27, 2011 11:47 PM

:previous: Why don't you propose one?

Chicago103 Nov 28, 2011 5:18 AM

I almost forgot about this proposal until I was browsing in this section. Zero news since the week the idea was unveiled to the public. I guess that shows how non serious this is.

im 13 years old and i want to be an architect. UNFORTUNATELY i have to wait a decade longer

A model for Google Earth/SketchUp I threw together with the help of a previously made warehouse model. 'Tis crude but it give a good idea of what it would look like on the skyline.

I suspected you were a little young. Don't let the old curmudgeons on this site talk down to you for asking questions! :)

But also, remember that reading up on some of these projects will teach you a lot more than anyone on here will be willing to summarize for you!

If you are ever bored and want to learn a lot, go back into the archived threads and check out what was going on with the Chicago Spire or other proposals during the boom in 2005-2008. I feel old now that I've realized people that are just old enough to be joining forums were only 7 or 8 when I first joined this forum and weren't even born when I started following this stuff when I was your age back in the late 1990's...

SSP: The only place where (presumably) straight men hope for a massive erection.

There's public misunderstanding, and surprisingly a huge amount of misunderstanding on this very website as to what is:

A Proposal

A Marketing Concept

Architectural firms sometimes generate concepts for clients to give ideas (or even just for themselves) to gain attention. What then happens is it gets up on the internet:

Firm gets their name out

Public interprets the "project" in different ways.

Some understand the visionary nature of the project as an idea and nothing more, while others mistake it as a real proposal. The public likes renderings and pictures of cool buildings, especially tall ones, so it gets alot of discussion in places like this website. It's all good, but I think Post Office Proposal got some harsh criticism for being too unrealistic. People....It's a CONCEPT. I think moving it to this section of the website was appropriate.

Thank you Hayward.

Not that I disagree...

Point man for Old Main Post Office

His first priority is to clean out and restore the post office building to create a blank canvas for retail and hotel designers to work with. He also must win over several groups, including historical preservationists to the City Council and the eventual investors.
Obviously I'm not suggesting that we will see 2000 footers, but maybe (fingers crossed) Davies will do more than just sit on the property and hope to flip it.

Either way, I was not expecting to see a story on this today.

This means that this project might not be dead. We shall know more soon.

That's not really what I meant at all. The drawings we saw were still strictly conceptual IMO.

However, I do think its possible that he will do some sort of real estate improvement of some kind.

For those who know the past of Davies, has he really never done anything but flip property? He's really never built or renovated anything?

Rey88 Dec 3, 2011 8:36 PM

Well, for me, the best solution is to built a single 2000 ft office+hotel tower like Miglin Beitler Skyneedle or Los Angeles Donald Trump Tower

meh_cd Dec 3, 2011 11:21 PM

There isn't a single proposal in Chicago that has surpassed the Skyneedle. Someone needs to pick that thing back up and build it.

ethereal_reality Dec 4, 2011 3:03 AM

Do you mean this Chicago proposal? ;)

Yeah, there might be more life in his concept than we think. It all seems mighty unrealistic and I'm especially not holding my breath for anything more than Central Station 2.0 after seeing the Spire get pretty far along and then stall.

emathias Dec 5, 2011 11:58 PM

OMG, the guy in the background of that old tower proposal photo must be Kennon Earl's dad or something!

Who the hell is Kennan Earl?

Nowhereman1280 Dec 6, 2011 3:07 PM

^^^ My thoughts exactly...

He provided a link to his blog, but I googled him and I'm not certain he even has a wikipedia stub...
