if this had gone up in Austin TX it would be the talk of SSP

From Friday (5/10)

There's something about the transparency of the glass and shape of the window bays that makes NEMA look like it's built out of Lego bricks and I love it.

Not so much Legos as this building set that shaped my young mind:

Perhaps Viñoly's as well.

Right, I hope it'll start a trend and that other skyscrapers will be built in this area. The Chicago skyline will be so huge :slob:

I mean who doesn't like overlooking a massive park?

Kenmore May 15, 2019 7:15 PM

best of the cycle, great building, great fit

r18tdi May 15, 2019 7:28 PM

Think they'll plant those arbitrary trees on each setback, as shown in the early model and renderings?

uaarkson May 15, 2019 10:00 PM

This thing looks great on the skyline, but when is Chicago going to ban parking garage podiums?

i don't imagine that it ever will.

but kind of a moot complaint in this thread because NEMA employs liner units to shield the parking levels from view.

As should be required.

I realize it doesn’t work for smaller lots, but then in that case parking needs to be underground or non-existent. ;)

sammyg May 16, 2019 3:51 PM

The city could also lower parking minimums, so the podiums could be smaller.

Perhaps Viñoly's as well.

I reached out to Mattel about this product to see if they had any plans for it. The response was basically, there is no information to share and that's that. Maybe we need a GoFundMe to buy the Super City IP.

Thanks Raphy. You saved the day. Well done. Could have gone so many different ways, but you gave it up. Sincerest form of respect. "And guess what?! It worked magically!" Congrats. Here forevermore. In the place so many are proud, generations proud, in so many different ways. But architectually is a big one. Score! Thanks.
