https://leaderpost.com/news/local-ne...-globe-theatre - March 18th, 2019

Globe Theatre is located inside the Prince Edward Building, constructed around 1907. It was a post office for the first half of its life and later served as Regina’s city hall before it was rented in 1980 by Saskatchewan’s first professional theatre company.
Globe purchased the building in 2013, at which point it was well known that the existing facility had reached the end of its useful life. Since it’s designated as a municipal heritage building, any form of renovation must be handled with care — especially when it comes to the iconic clock tower. Globe Theatre hopes to move back into the facility in late 2023. The first season in the renovated building would launch early in 2024.

Thanks for creating a thread for The Globe Theatre at MacCorquodale Place. I was curious how they were going to improve the seating (especially in the corners with poor sightlines). I look forward to seeing the restored exterior. It's an attractive building that just needed a lot of TLC!

Will there be an increase in seating at all? Or is this more of a general makeover, with added stage tech?

According to Wikipedia, the seating capacity for the main theatre was 406.

The following is from a Leader-Post story by from 2019. (I have included the link below, if you are interested).

"The roof will be taken off in order to expand the seating in the mainstage area by 100 seats and everything will be made accessible, a 180-degree switch from the theatre’s current state."

Wild that it’s taking 4 years to complete, but I guess that comes with the territory.

It will be around 430 as the new seats and isles will both be wider.

A large amount of it is. Some of it is a handful of shops and a restaurant. There used to be a museum on the upper floors and I’m not sure what that is now.

I am wondering with the announcement of 11th Avenue getting an overhaul (which will affect the north side of the Globe more so) that hopefully/maybe the city has a Scarth Street mall overhaul in the planning as well. It continues to be my hope. I wonder how much of the front entrance area of the Globe onto Scarth will be done.

God, me too. Scarth Street has so much potential and could be the redeemer of the failed (to many) 12th Ave patio project. Though, didn't Sandra Masters suggest opening it up to traffic during her mayoral campaign?

Regina’s Globe Theatre announces 2022 season as renovation work continues

https://i.ibb.co/XVKnMD0/59750-DC4-5...79-A027-C8.jpg

The $29-million project was given a big addition Tuesday with the revelation that Gordon Rawlinson is the $1-million Main Stage donor for the new building, which will be known as The Globe at MacCorquodale Place.

“Giving back to the communities Rawlco serves has been a hallmark philosophy of the Rawlinson family for the past 75 years,” said Tom Newton, vice-president and general manager of Rawlco Radio Regina, who was on hand for the cheque presentation.

“This philosophy continues today with this amazing partnership with Globe Theatre. We believe that the arts are vitally important to creating a vibrant downtown and we are pleased to be part of this new era.

“We are looking forward to the completion of The Globe at MacCorquodale Place and opening night on the brand-new Rawlinson Main Stage.”

Gordon Rawlinson is the owner of Rawlco Radio.

Is there a link for the details? The main thing 11th needs is more trees with proper wells and some watering for the first few years. Young trees need more than just deicer runoff.

Stormer Nov 10, 2021 4:17 PM

They have demolished everything on the roof, other than the 2 copper domes.

Definitely think the work on Victoria Avenue (Albert Street to Broad Street) was worth it and 11th Avenue (Albert Street to Broad Street) will also be. 11th Avenue is an absolute eyesore (the sidewalks alone). But yes, the Regina construction season is never fun. Lol.

The intersection right outside of the Globe Theatre across from the Cornwall Centre needs attention. New sidewalks and curbs, more trees, new benches, maybe a new bus shelter with brighter lighting under the bridge. Better lighting in general.

I also would love the city to put electrical outlets for each tree cell along 11th Avenue so that they can string lights on each tree or portions of to create something like this…

Victoria looks great, but it took forever. Replacing the grass and pavers with woodchips will really help the median trees.

Electrifying the tree wells on 11th is a great idea.

djforsberg Nov 11, 2021 10:00 PM

Very happy to see this coming along and that they already have some shows lined up. My girlfriend and I were checking out a lot of live theatre in the year leading up to the pandemic and we’re eager to get back to it.

Haha! Also, one of the main additions in the renovation will be an actual freight elevator separate from the public elevator. This will greatly improve delivery/installation of larger/heavier set pieces etc. to and from the upper floors and the main theatre.

Looks really nice, but I'm pretty sure that's not gender neutral washrooms. It just looks like and either-or option with one main door.

That’s not what a gender neutral washroom is. Most people with female genitals wouldn’t be able to use a urinal that well lol. It’s likely that there’s individual rooms as opposed to stalls with a toilet and sink like you’re seeing at a lot of restaurants. Or the sinks are outside the rooms in a common area like what the new Argyle/St Pius X school is going to have for higher grades.

It's how I've seen it in gay bars in larger cities. Urinals available for those with male genitals, stalls for those with female (or for #2) and with a shared sink area. Choose whichever option you need based on either your genitals or the situation at hand.
