If they could protect and renew theses houses, it would be such an amazing area. But sadly, in Taiwan theses places often end up destroyed to build ugly high rise. Money, money...

There are quite a few places like that - Treasure Hill, Xinyi Assembly Hall, , Bopiliao Historical Block, Dadaocheng, Leper Village. I really don't any issue with redeveloping the site. It's not reasonable to allow such a large area to be occupied by low-rise dwellings.

Most of those areas are actually illegally built structures on government owned land. The dwellings are mainly occupied by remnants of the old KMT/ retired soldiers, who pay nothing in taxes, but are nonetheless old, poor, and drawing on pension. The sites get redeveloped when the government decides to do something with that land, which is often accompanied by loud grassroots outcry of old people getting forced out of their homes.

Nobody is technically allowed to own anything on those lands, nor can they be passed down, so its a somewhat complicated situation, and will pass away with that generation.

It's true that space in Taipei is a problem, and that higher density building make more sense. But at the same time most of the new high rise are just trully ugly, or soulless, at best. Theses settlement have history and are what gives character to a city. I am not sure if this settlement really need to be saved, however Taipei have so few historical building remaining, that everyone is worth trying to save.
