The search function shows the Mocambo mentioned several times on NLA, but I only saw one post with the exterior pictured, a color slide posted by E_R here:

When I first saw the above photo I was wondering about the Mocambo's decor. It looks like a barber's pole behind Tab Hunter. Apparently the interiors were designed by William Haines and Brazilian themed and the "special decorations" were supplied by designer Tony Duquette.

The Mocambo was one of the premier nightclubs on the Sunset Strip, but those b&w photographs make it seem kinda tacky to me, what's your opinion?

In any case, maybe, I thought it would look different in color and I managed to find a couple photos taken from a 1949 article titled The Mocambo Affairs, in Modern Screen Magazine.

That parking garage is relatively new. I don't know when Lyman's was torn down, but I believe it was a parking lot area as long as I can remember. (Lots of building on Vine Street lately.)

Here's a 1964 photograph of the theatre advertising The Best Man, by Gore Vidal, I believe.
(I don't think the Lyman building is to the right of the theatre here...)

A quick Google found no previous mentions of the Pacific Hospital. It first appears in the 1900/01 CD at 1319 South Grand Avenue, and stays in the listings until 1929 (although the address changes to 1329 S Grand between 1911 and 1915). Did the coming of the much larger California Medical Building/California Hospital on the Hope Street side of the same block spell the end for the Pacific Hospital? I don't know what happened in the 1930s, but 1329 S Grand is listed under 'Automobile Parking' in the 1942 CD. The postmark dates this postcard at 1911.

Here's an article about the hospital's opening from the December 22, 1899 edition of the Los Angeles Herald. I love the line about how it's "so nearly perfect in all its appointments and so attractive in finish and finishings, it almost robs surgical operations of their terror and makes illness attractive."

The large facility in the lower portion of the photo is the Los Angeles Riding Academy, which fronted what is now Beverly Boulevard on property now occupied by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Where is Sunset Blvd. in the above picture? It seems like the only east/west street above Santa Monica is Holloway. Surely Sunset was built by the time this picture was taken. Can somebody point it out for me.

Captivating movie set but... it doesn't look Laurel Canyon at all (that's where Geiger's house is fictionnaly located) ! It looks european (England, Switzerland...). Many european plastic artists were working in Hollywood by the 1940s. That may explain.

Later, in the movie, there's a small frame house behind a garage ("hot-car drop likely") lost in the middle of nowhere in the country along the foothills : the inside is decorated like if we were within a classy 1940s mansion in Hollywood ! These nonsenses are not without charm : they show the fancies of a period.

The yellow line is Sunset and the blue line is Santa Monica....roughly.;)

The red circle is ER's home when he was in show business in Hollywood. I believe his bungalow is posted somewhere on NLA.

The first one was from the early 20's and the second from 1931. Sunset Blvd. is winding it's way along the bottom of the hills and easier to see in the 20's photo with far less
building on it. It's narrower than Santa Monica, which also had P.E. car lines in the middle of it and, on Sunset, structures are built close to the road because of the topography,
making the road seem less obvious in the aerials.

LOL, our reality is full of fanciful architectural nonsense too, so a half-timbered English cottage sits next to a bougainvillea-draped hacienda, cheek-by-jowl with a Moorish or Tyrolean fantasy. So why shouldn't a small, stone, Irish crofter's cottage (with a somewhat incongruous and flimsy Georgian-style colonnade) open to a mysterious and exotic Asian interior? My own neighborhood was legally restricted to "English or Mediterranean" styles (those, of course, weren't the only restrictions). The "rain"-drenched "Big Sleep" set looked wonderfully familiar to me and delightfully artificial at the same time.

I think Tony Duquette was responsible for the contact-high-inducing figures at the Mocambo e-r. In Martin Pal's large color photo, the draperies, colors, stripes and the outstanding "fringe" hanging from the ceiling (it looks like little lamps, maybe it was little lamps) are all classic Haines.

Notice the ringmaster is a wolf (or a crocodile?). All the more reason for the little lambs to stay aloft. The tableau is mirror-backed. The lambs do not have more legs than normal, the effect is caused by reflections.

Tony Duquette had a nice sense of play, but I think his creations had to be carefully lit so as not to appear "tacky". Some of Duquette's work seems closer to temporary window displays or stage sets, maybe less well-suited to a permanent installation, in contrast to the Wisecracker's smoothly finished work.

Since you mentioned it, here is an interesting group of Sunset Strip photos including the Westside Market, aka Roxy http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...&postcount=917. And a film clip that has been around for a while and probably mentioned on NLA, of the same area: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyADsPMN76Y At ~02' 12" you may note a sign for the construction of Cafe Lamaze which opened in 1935, the "Key Club."
