I've thought before that urbanists and city planners here aren't making their best argument for tall buildings if they aren't emphasizing the increased shade.

The "buildings will provide the shade" was a standing argument for maintaining the status quo of the lack of shade downtown. Chicken and egg, if you ask me.

Grabbed an update pic of Ida with Derby in the background. For a container project, Ida is going to look pretty good IMO.

Derby is on the 16th floor while the penthouse is up to 18. Quite a few more floors to go. Should be close to the operators booth in height when completed.

I know I'm nitpicking here, but I just noticed that there are more of the concrete squares (11 wide) than what's shown in the Ida rendering (9 wide). The rendering also shows a separation that makes it 2 independent structures which doesn't seem to go with what's currently getting built.

Must've been a design change. I hope it's still going to be 7 levels tall.

Wow, that is a huge step up in architecture for what Phoenix (or almost any other city for that matter) is used to seeing. Looks like an outstanding development.

Was that thing even approved? I suspected it was a serious long shot from the beginning.

The article stated that that planning commission approved it 6 to 0 and recommend approval to the city council. The article also said construction would start this year. So I am under the impression that it's dead.:shrug:

Now that this forum has pronounced it dead, we'll soon hear that a tenant has been lined up and construction is imminent :haha:

Saw workers putting up new signage for Knipe Village saying coming 1Q 2022. So that would mean a groundbreaking later this year. We’ll see…

I was on a variance hearing today and Astra was an item on the list. Missed if it passed, but grabbed a couple screen shots of some renderings (not sure how to upload jpgs), but it is definitely moving forward.

I posted a response to your screen grabs on the Astra thread. I didn't realize that these were new renderings versus what I thought were from the zoning height adjustment. I wonder why Empire has different looking renderings for the tallest tower on their webpage? :shrug:

With it now being June, I don’t think the Central Station will break ground anytime soon. I think that lot is cursed lol I also feel we are in a weird situation with the Katerra news as well. The only good news so far is that Astra looks like a good bet but that project will probably break ground sometime next year. I don’t think 2021 will be the year for downtown development projects.
