Urban Sushi in Emerald Park is quite good with lots of options for non-sushi people as well.

Ate at Siam on Friday. It was fantastic. Such a nice restaurant. Make reservations, a few couples and groups were turned away.

There's a much better vibe downtown these days with a couple of extra taverns open on Scarth and Hamilton. Just seemed a bit livelier after 6:00pm, although Atlantis was a ghost town around 8:00pm. I would have expected more traffic. We need a theatre downtown!

There is another new Chinese restaurant near there as well, on the North Service Road: the old Bonanza. Pretty good stuff too!

The Chinese restaurant on Eastgate Drive (the old Buddy's / Alfredo's) is called China Liang's. I have eaten there several times since it opened and I just love their buffet. Best Chinese buffet in town, IMO. Lots of choices, fresh, tasty and they are continually refilling the trays, unlike some other Chinese buffets in town. I highly recommend it, but shhh! Don't tell everyone as it is getting pretty busy at times.

Although not a new pub, the all(?) seasons patio canopy for O'Hanlon's/Copper Kettle is.
Does anyone know why the delay in finishing it?
Hasn't it been a year already since they started?

Just was talking with paul one of the owners and he said they were delayed coming from Italy. He said he's expecting them by the end of October. He was kinda disappointed they never arrived sooner.

Almost done finally. they need the roof and some more heaters. There is already radiant heat in the sidewalk and benches.

China Liang's is pretty good for Chinese buffet. My wife also likes Dynasty in Wingate Hotel, Downtown. Hopefully, as Regina's population grows, a (any) Chinese Buffet restaurant will evolve or locate here to be something like Dragon Pearl Buffet (trendy, super buffet), which includes a manned (with chef or food preparer) station each for dim sum, sushi, BBQ and specialty items (Think BBQ pork, Peking duck!), creating your own stir fry, etc.

Some other Asian food places we've enjoyed around town include Miso Ya, Sake, I Like Sushi, I Love Sushi, Da India Curry House, Flavours of India, Spices of Punjab for all-you-can-eat; Teppanyaki, sort of fine dining and food prep entertainment; Wasabi, Korea House, Viet Thai, Thai Gardens, Mai Phuong, Ngoc Van, Nhu Y Tea Tree.

Some of the Chinese restaurants we frequent for family outings are Regency Palace, Peking House, Lee's Chop Suey East, Four Seas, J&A. J&A makes great dim sum, which we'll often order for pick up, pretty well any time during opening hours!

For more takeout, Milu's Fresh Rolls and Subs, makes a pretty good "Charbroiled BBQ Pork" rice plate, or "Meatballs" rice plate! For Chinese pastries, China Pastry usually has a good selection of sweet, savoury and dessert buns (eg. coconut, cream, hot dog, onion & chives, egg or egg & ham, BBQ pork, or red bean fillings, baked in or on a browned, sweet, doughy bun), cakes, egg tarts, etc.

Not sure if you're joking about needing a reservation or not...

I walk by the place all the time and it always smells soooo amazing.. We went once, and the food was definitely good, but pricey.

But we went at 5:30 during the week, and were the only people in there the whole time we ate.. When we walked in, the owner was sitting at a table with his feet on the table and seemed surprised at someone coming in.. At supper time.. Haha.

But man, the smell that comes out of that place is absolute heaven.

Our go to Indian place is Spices of punjab.. So good and so cheap for a buffet.

I think I've tried all the East Indian places in town at this point and they're all great in their own rights. Caraway Grill has fantastic, authentic food with powerful spices and flavours. It has my mouth watering just thinking about it. I always go to Flavours of India when having company over or just needing a good meal because it's more mainstream and easier on the stomach while still being super tasty. Spices of Punjab was really good although with CG and FoI around I don't know why I'd choose this place over those two. Da India Curry House was a distant fourth, I wasn't a fan of the food that I ordered, maybe I need to try something else that they make but I don't think I'll go back.

Do those other places have buffet options?

We love SoP because of the buffet, as we usually aren't too comfortable guessing what we might like off the menu. The buffet is also only like $14 which I think is one of the best deals in the city!

FoI has a daily lunch buffet which I think is also $14. I think CG is too small to do a buffet.

^Caraway Grill has a lunch special which is $12 I believe. It was enough food for two days and included a meat dish, a vegetable dish, rice, a huge amount of naan, and vegetable pakora (really, really good.)

With all the activity in and around downtown, I thought it would be a good idea to start a new thread for more detailed updates, photos, menus etc. from all the new establishments proposed for downtown. Here is an initial list.

  1. No action in the rumoured Famosa location in Tower 2;
  2. 20Ten City Eatery on 12th looks ready to open and has a stunning, urban décor; http://instagram.com/20teneatery https://twitter.com/20TenEatery,
  3. Fat Badger Pub on the FW Hill Mall appears to be moving slowly. Décor is traditional pub with lots of booths. This has an affiliation with O'Hanlon's, but is intended to be more upscale;
  4. The former Deborah Dees on 11th and Cornwall confirmed it will be a restaurant by the owners of Flip. Little work appears to have been done inside. It is a beautiful space though.
  5. Victoria's Tavern on Hamilton is now open. https://twitter.com/VictoriasTavern
  6. The Loggies building on Hamilton has apparently been sold. It is apparently to house a martini bar/tapas place called The Capitol.
  7. The Keg on Dewdney and Albert is U/C.
  8. The Chopped Leaf on the FW Hill Mall is moving extremely slowly.
  9. The Taste of Mediterranean franchise on 11th is also moving very slowly.
  10. The Lobby Public House on Broad is open.
What am I missing?

If you are gonna classify the new Keg at Albert and Dewdney as "downtown," (which I agree with) then I think Rebellion Brewing Co at Broad and Dewdney also deserves a mention. But then I am a little biased.

Almost without exception, the downtown pubs & restaurants are supportive of each other (e.g. retweeting, mentioning each other's events, etc), but many take it a step further... I routinely see staff & management from one establishment hanging out at "competitors'" businesses. They realize there's a lot of room for growth, and getting a critical mass of businesses is critical to the collective survival & prosperity.

Compare & contrast a certain restaurateur on Albert trying to monopolize & drive competition out (even reaching into Cathedral & using status as a landlord to squeeze out businesses that are taking the spotlight away from his establishments).

Not entirely related to the downtown pub and restaurant scene... but related to the feel of downtown... I had to do some errands downtown yesterday and it actually felt fairly busy/alive on the streets. Usually weekends are a little slower (especially when the farmers' market isn't on the square), but yesterday was surprisingly active. Could be a bit of an offshoot of having more pubs/restaurants... some more stores opening up due to activity, which draws more people in, etc.

There seems to be a real rebirth of this area that used to be very stale and lifeless. With the Lot Club & Bombay Indian Food being added, a set of traffic lights at 14th ave for easier movement for pedestrians, fancy new signage on Richmond Nychuk, the replacement of the dirt lot at 15th & Angus with a new condo building, it's looking a whole lot better there these days. The two eyesore brownfields need addressing now for it to really start to transition into a desirable stretch of road. I'd like to see the Baker Watson building be repainted with some bold colours too. It's a unique building that hides behind the 1990's peachy beige.

They've already used it several times at Rebellion (first time was Mar 14th... they've been there most Thursdays, and usually every couple of weekends): http://twitter.com/cravekwbTRUCK

Sounds like Rebellion is planning more permanent service hook-ups for food trucks (allowing them to shut off their generator, access water, etc), and increasing frequency of trucks (Crave & Smoke's Poutine have been regular fixtures over the past month & a half).
