Comparis was the Italian restaurant at 8600 S Sepulveda. No pics found of the corner in that incarnation either.

Thx again GW. Sterling info. The Home Savings buildings, the Scottish Rite Temple and related projects with integrated monumental sculptures sure had an impact on the look of mid-century LA.

I'd still like to know who the one above is supposed to be.

But Sheets is probably best still known (by name anyway) for his well-loved 1931 painting, "Angels Flight":

It's pretty monumental too: 50" x 40"

It's always on display. People go nuts if the museum tries to rotate it into storage.

P.S. Thx e_r too for the memories of the Loyola from Cinema Treasures. It was a great house.

Columbia Square Revisited

According the The Wall Street Journal, "A stalled project in Hollywood is set to finally get under way in a development that will test demand for office space in the slowly gentrifying area." Story here.

It's hard to find pictures of Westchester. It's changed some in recent years, but for a long time, not much ever happened here. That's how it got the nickname Deadchester. It's a hotbed of lethargy.

This zoomed-in portion of a 1963 LAX aerial view shows the Westchester Business District; Lincoln and Sepulveda is the major intersection at lower left, and Manchester and Sepulveda is at upper right. I've marked with an arrow the rectangular building on the NE corner of Manchester/Sepulveda that I recall was an italian restaurant. Its address would have been 85XX, it was painted a dark red, and possibly called Tony's. It's now the site of a 12-story medical/office building (where I had a 90-minute root canal last year).

As I mentioned in another post, the other downtown Westchester theater was the 1,300-seat Paradise at the SE corner of Sepulveda Blvd. and Will Rogers St. (now Westchester Parkway), which opened in 1950. I think it closed before the Loyola, but I can't say for sure. It's marked with an X in the picture above.

P.S. Thanks, ER, for the Quadrophenia ad. :) I wish I could say it brought back more memories of that night at the Loyola Theater, but my recollection of many events from that era was hazy to begin with and has not improved since.

Since I am one of those who is rather inept when it comes to figuring out computer applications – meaning that all my efforts to attempt to load and use the right type of sites has only resulted in getting a bunch of unwanted junk on my computer that will cost me an arm and leg to have them removed – I am unable to point out the one little surprise about the old east building. There is a small portion that is still there and is part of the old brick barn that replaced the east building. If someone will check Google or Bing street scenes at the south-east corner of Raymond and Green Street you will see the ground floor remains of a small portion of the old hotel building. Then find a photo of the building (and they are out there) and see the small piece of Pasadena history preserved. I worked within about a half mile of this place for over 12 years and was always kind of curious about the odd difference in the appearance, but that was before home computers and the net. So it’s a recent discovery (at least by me).

The old pedestrian bridge crossing Raymond still extends up to the west side of the street.

Is this building in question?

That's the east building. We're looking north in that shot. So all that's left of the building is the part at the corner in the distance.

Hmm, it's possible that the newly elected Pope Francis I may have ridden that car, or others like it as a young man in Buenos Aires. (He is 76, assuming that he has not had his birthday yet, he was born in 1936, so he would have been a young man of 19 or so when those cars arrived from Los Angeles in 1955, following the closing of the Glendale-Burbank PE line. It's a tragedy that one of them could not have been preserved at the Orange Empire Railway Museum, but alas, it did not exist in 1955 :( Now if the Glendale-Burbank Line had lasted until 1960... (OERM was established in 1958, IIRC).

The ugly brick building that replaced the beautiful old hotel does not fit with the corner portion. Why that small section of the first floor was retained while all above it and around it was dismantled is probably lost to time, but at this point we can be glad that someone saw some value there. The occupant is Stats, a craft and arts store which does a landmark business prior to Christmas selling decorations and such. When I worked nearby the rounded corner section was as originally built without the door. Inside that area was kind of dark and there were the remains of crown moldings and other relics of long ago. It truly had a noirish feel. I haven’t been in the building for many years and with an entry added on the corner, I’m not sure what would still remain of those decorative features or did they “remodel” this as an entry?
Check out the 1903 Pasadena Sanborn Map on Historic Map Works. See plate 28 showing a simplified first floor plan. The use for the rounded corner is not specifically identified but adjacent is a labeled “helps dining room B” as in “The Help”

If you go to below site and scroll down about 1/3 you will find a portion of a Sanborn Map (photo 29) showing a Santa Fe station. This is Pasadena and to the left is the southern half of the eastern Hotel Green Building. Scroll down two more photos to 31 and you come across a marvelous photo showing that same Santa Fe station and that same half of the Green, AND the northern half of the hotel near completion. Check out the next photo for a view of the RR station. Also check photos 34, 35, 37 and 42 for more green.

And in it's early days it was the Hotel Webster.

Ethereal:

Thought I was the only one who immediately said "Dick van Dyke!" when I saw the cascade of walnuts in the clipping.

If I recall, it was Danny Thomas who played "Twilo", the man in the giant walnut, yes?

ethereal_reality Mar 14, 2013 5:57 PM

yes it was Danny Thomas nostalgie!
If I remember correctly, "Twylo" was from outerspace and he had eyes in the back of his head (but no thumbs!)
The episode sounds awful but it really works...it's both scary and fun.

The Pacific Electric PCC cars were all double ended while the LATL were all single ended. And if memory serves me, the PE cars were standard gauge and LATL were narrow
