Here I am in July 1971 trying to lift one of the foam boulders. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...923/IWm17e.jpg It was heavy. . .for foam. And with a huge pair of scissors. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/aQ2uOm.jpg July 1971 . |

There is a group of 108 photographs from the 1910s currently on eBay. Here are a few examples. Pasadena: Tournament of Roses Parade 1911 with Castle Green in the background; crowded street scene. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/8ttSVe.jpg Link https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/WIog2o.jpg Link Does anyone recognize the building on the float? ....It almost looks like the White House. Lookout Mountain Drive, Laurel Canyon, Hollywood: aerial view, Wulffs Peak, mountains, etc. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/huSy8A.jpg Link This is a wonderful photograph. Catalina Island: very early, pre-1915 fire, pre-casino; Avalon, Sugar Loaf Rock, harbor, street scenes. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/Wfwlh7.jpg Link Amazing photograph. That's the widest dirt street that I've ever seen. Mar. 16, 1911 train wreck on Kite Shaped Track near Glendale (or Edendale, writing hard to make out) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/6acTYi.jpg Link I wonder if the people are passengers or looky-loos? The bids are flying fast and the total (for the group of 108 photos) is up to $321.00 Check out the other photographs Here..(be forewarned / they're frustratingly small) . |
This looks like a low-speed headon collision, and the Santa Fe mainline heading north out of Los Angeles was single-track for much of its route, but it went through Highland Park and South Pasadena instead of Edendale or Glendale.
I didn't have any better luck reading the handwriting on the print, so a mystery it remains. |

Great photo! The building on the float is Glendale High School and I'm just assuming it's on the City of Glendale float. ____________ * |

Mystery location:...Old Man Rock. Quote:
It took me several days but I believe I finally found the exact location of 'Old Man Rock'. (I hope he's still there!) GNIS...(California Geographic Names System) ...Page 804 The page was scanned sideways & it was difficult to figure out how to post it. The following three sections should be side by side but. . .I had to post them vertically. I placed a red arrow at the Old Man Rock column https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/QstpWO.jpg It's described as a pillar. . .and the coordinates are on the right. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/6tBuZ8.jpg https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/mAzzql.jpg um. . .that's all well and good. . .but I don't know how to use 'coordinates' to find a location. :dunce: . |

I stuck in decimals and got 40.2306n 122.4957w which is indeed a spot in California, but not in Los Angeles county. Thanks for trying. I put it on a Facebook page as planned, but it ain't gonna get many views. Probably gonna have to find a hiking forum. |

What a place! Went there to see Queen for a Day with Jack Bailey. "How would you like to be Queen for a Day?"

Couldn't find the specifics I wanted, e_r; but it's worth noting that as far as I can tell it doesn't seem to have been mentioned as being actually seen since 1936. Here, chronologically, are some gleanings from my search, among which are some faint clues as to location:
https://i.postimg.cc/N0nqtXhD/Rock-LAT-1910-9-1.jpg LA Times, 9/1/1910. Here's the whole related chunk of the Holcomb article mentioned by Mackerm: https://i.postimg.cc/HWXDGj60/Rock-P...-p471-1914.jpg Popular Astronomy, v. 22, p. 471, 1914. https://i.postimg.cc/8zyxdvCG/Rock-LAT-1932-11-27.jpg LA Times, 11/27/1932. https://i.postimg.cc/L62WrDYR/Rock-LAT-1936-4-5.jpg LA Times, 4/5/1936. The funny thing is that I've hiked all the way up to Mt. Wilson at least twice, and so must have walked past the turn-off trail to the formation each time! Even if it has weathered and fallen apart (or been chipped up unrecognizably by vandals), it would be interesting to see what the remains look like now. |

Hail, fellow hiker! CaliNative, I took the Sierra Madre trail. I did it on December 31, 1969. If I recall correctly, very near the summit, it joins the toll road's path. Me, near the bottom of the trail: https://i.postimg.cc/HLYXmJ0r/BCD-Wilson-1001.jpg odinthor collection Me, at the top: https://i.postimg.cc/g0gR2Y4N/BCD-Wilson-3001.jpg odinthor collection The Old Man Rock's site, as far as I can guess, would have been in the canyon straight down directly behind me. |
