1935: An appropriately stylish delivery truck for Bullock's. It might, however, have been a case of style over function. I can understand there being no door for frequent ins-and-outs in sunny L.A., but the small opening looks mighty uncomfortable for getting in and out quickly. Managing not to fall out of the seat on turns must also have been tricky, not to mention seeing out of the low windshield. A commenter to the thread on which I found this picture had this interesting note: "I read somewhere that, during the Depression, Bullock's had their drivers drive empty delivery vans around Los Angeles to give the illusion of robust sales and successful operations, when in reality, business was terrible."

Lookout Mountain Part 2: Finding The Old Roads

David,

I never knew this hotel existed and I had fun rattling around on Google Maps trying to identify the various streets and roads. While I was unable to effect any positive ID's I am going to hazard a guess the Double Bow Knot Boulevard is now part of the Betty B. Dearing Trail as seen on Google Maps satellite view north of Mulholland Drive between Laurel Pass and Ardenwood Road.

Cheers,
Jack

Did you realize this photograph was taken by Ansel Adams?:D:tup::)

"Around 1939, Ansel Adams was commissioned by Fortune magazine to photograph a series of images for an article covering the aviation history of the Los Angeles area. For the project, Adams took 217 photographs showing everyday life, businesses, street scenes, aerospace employees, and a variety of other subjects, but when the article, "City of Angels," appeared in the March 1941 issue, only a few of the images were included. In the early 1960s, approximately 20 years later, Adams rediscovered all of the photographs among papers at his home in Carmel, and sent a letter of inquiry to the Los Angeles Public Library, asking if the institution would be interested in receiving the collection as a donation. In his letter, Adams expressed that, "the weather was bad over a rather long period and none of the pictures were very good" and "if they have no value whatsoever, please dispose of them in the incenerator [sic]." He went on to write that "I would imagine that they represent about $100.00 minimum value." In response, the Los Angeles Public Library gladly accepted the gift of 135 contact prints and 217 negatives, and the staff concluded that a fair value for the collection would be $150.00. "

The Brown Derby by Ansel Adams:
http://jpg2.lapl.org/pics48/00058528.jpghttp://jpg2.lapl.org/pics48/00058528.jpg

"The Brown Derby had four locations: Beverly Hills, Los Feliz, Hollywood, and Wilshire Boulevard. The first Brown Derby Restaurant, shown here, was built in 1926 and is generally referred to as the "Wilshire Brown Derby." Designed in part by J.R. Davidson, it measured 28 feet in diameter and 17 1/2 feet in height and was the only one of the four restaurant buildings that resembled a bowler hat. It was first located at 3427 Wilshire Boulevard, across the street from the Ambassador Hotel, but was later moved one block over to 3347 Wilshire Boulevard. In 1975, it was closed and sold. After the restaurant was demolished in 1980, the shell of the hat-shaped dome was restored, painted orange, and incorporated into the design of the Brown Derby Plaza, a strip mall at 3377 Wilshire Boulevard."

"Opened on September 24, 1905, the Court Flight was built by Attorney R. E. Blackburn of the McCarthy real estate firm and Samuel G Vandegrift, to serve the wealthy residents of Bunker Hill. The line was entirely double tracked, using a pair of thirty-inch gauge counterbalanced cars, and ran for a distance of 180 feet up a 42 per cent grade between Broadway and Court Streets, in the middle of the block between Temple and First Streets. A fire on October 20, 1943 damaged the line and put it out of commission."

Ansel Adams and Pershing Square:

http://jpg2.lapl.org/pics49/00059353.jpghttp://jpg2.lapl.org/pics49/00059353.jpg

"Former Mayor Cristobal Aguilar signed Pershing Square into being in 1866, at which time it was called La Plaza Abaja ("The Lower Plaza"). During the 1880s and '90s, it was known as 6th Street Park and Central Park, but was renamed Pershing Square in 1918 in honor of General John J. Pershing. The park was first renovated in 1911; in the 1950s a car garage was built beneath it; and in 1994, it was completely redesigned by architect Ricardo Legoretta and landscapist Laurie Olin and was rededicated on February 3, 1994. Pershing Square takes up the entire block and is bounded by 5th Street to the north, 6th Street to the south, Hill Street to the east, and Olive Street to the west."
