https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/8aRDeQ.jpg ebay I thought there might be a clue on the back....but I believe it's in German. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...921/eGR4Q6.jpg top line: My (that's as far as I got. lol) __ |

Thanks Scott_Charles.
Here is another 'mystery' location from the Los Angeles Documentary Project [1980] https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/mOQXsz.jpg Douglas Hill 1979 I like this photograph...I like the abundance of plants (do tell odinthor), but I truly doubt we'll ever figure out the location of this one. The only significant clue, that I can see, is the hotel in the upper left corner. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/c8tFIf.jpg detail __ |
This one should be easier because we have the EXACT ADDRESS.
819 Ozone St., Venice CA https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/2vLArf.jpg LOS ANGELES DOCUMENTARY PROJECT ...but I'm still having a hard time matching the current GSV to the 1980 photograph. |

Or maybe I'm just feeling a little too cantankerous and splenetic tonight. |

https://i.imgur.com/iIGykIq.png The building has been modified dramatically, but details of the 1980 version still linger. In the 38 years since the photo was taken, virtually everything in the background has disappeared. The used car lot directly behind is still there, but everything else - Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pic 'n' Save, Winston Tire, the Submarine sandwich joint, Cafe Rustico, the violin lessons - is gone. |

Snark aside...it looks like the Sub place and the Winston Tire buildings have survived. |

:previous: Harvard does intersect Pico. The area is known as Harvard Heights. Tall structure in background appears to bear the bell telephone symbol. At 2978 Pico there is a business that repairs Wurlitzers and other Jukeboxes. Construct permit bears 1905 date and facade seems consistent with that date. :bowtie: https://i2.ypcdn.com/blob/3cf0044f80...57a133_640.jpghttps://i2.ypcdn.com/blob/3cf0044f80...57a133_640.jpg https://www.google.com/maps/place/29....3056232?hl=en Different day, different cop, maybe the same ostrich? In the other post, yes, good work!, you have correctly identified Daisyicus fake-us tinicus, one of the many species in family Plasticaceæ, which is also represented in the pic by two specimens of the Orange Cone Plant, Conensis aurantiaca trafficæ. |

which led me to this insignificant discovery Did you know the remodeled Farmer's Daughter Motel on Fairfax (across from the Farmer's Market), kept one room as is (or shall I say as was). It's named the No Tell Room. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/5EEGQY.jpg timeout Yes, those are mirrors on the ceiling and the headboard. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...921/feUpbn.jpg timeout As a reminder: Here's how the Farmer's Daughter Motel looked back in the 1960s-70s https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/CfOj93.jpg & today https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/zp2mRc.jpg note: the 'City Slicker' cocktail lounge is now the TART cafe. I came across a small photoset (four images) at USC earlier, which shows 8th Street between Hope and Flower Streets in 1932. This one is looking west across Flower Street from just west of Hope Street.
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...8thFlower1.jpg USC Digital Library The guy on the right, directly under the "CONGRESS" blade sign, caught my eye, so I zoomed in. The only lawn mower sharpener I can see in the 1932 CD is Frank E Houghtaling, with a business address at 8120 S Vermont Avenue and a home address at 610 W 46th Street. I assume the sharpener also did knives, because I can't imagine that there were many lawn mowers at 8th and Flower! http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...8thFlower2.jpg Detail of picture above For search purposes: First English Evangelical Lutheran Church, 800 S Flower Street Sawyer School Of Business, 812 W 8th Street Medico-Dental Building, 947 W 8th Street Abbey Hotel, 825 W 8th Street Congress Hotel, 729 W 8th Street |
While looking through ebay, yesterday, I came across this 'rare' Liquor License Tax stamp.
"RARE CITY OF LOS ANGELES LIQUOR LICENSE TAX STAMP 3 CENTS" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...922/Xe7dud.jpg ebay $22.00 "One Case or Fractional Part" 3 cents I don't understand how this system worked. Where did you stick the stamps...on the case? on the delivery order? on the invoice? _____________________________________________________________________ update: There's a second stamp on ebay today. "USA 1933 Los Angeles Liquor License Tax 4c black" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...923/h7a0R7.jpg ebay This one says 1/8 BBL (BBL = beer bottle, right?) 4 cents still confused. _ |

Boy, I thought I was clever! I felt like such a schmuck when I found out "The Farmer's Daughter" actually aired on ABC. BTW, Happy 96th Birthday to Grauman's Egyptian Theatre. |
That sound like the type of connection I would make.
a wrong one. ;) |
Here's another type of license.
A Los Angeles manicurist's license for the year 1928-29.
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...923/tTUHrp.jpg ebay (found a long time ago) Dolores Edgington - 2327 Scarff St. - Los Angeles Calif This is extra interesting because we have a photograph of the manicurist. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/71WsVK.jpghttps://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/PLPCI5.jpg "To my wonderful Sweet-heart Phil. from Dolores, All My Love" Novio yo de ano.
