The Nu-Lift Co Inc (maternity supports) was at 1021 N Las Palmas and Lucille of Hollywood was at 1025. All the buildings seem to have gone.

...but I'm still having a hard time matching the current GSV to the 1980 photograph.

We can't see the letter preceding OTEL, and this looks more like a motel to me.

Or maybe I'm just feeling a little too cantankerous and splenetic tonight.

The building has been modified dramatically, but details of the 1980 version still linger.

In the 38 years since the photo was taken, virtually everything in the background has disappeared. The used car lot directly behind is still there, but everything else - Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pic 'n' Save, Winston Tire, the Submarine sandwich joint, Cafe Rustico, the violin lessons - is gone.

Snark aside...it looks like the Sub place and the Winston Tire buildings have survived.

Harvard does intersect Pico. The area is known as Harvard Heights. Tall structure in background appears to bear the bell telephone symbol. At 2978 Pico there is a business that repairs Wurlitzers and other Jukeboxes. Construct permit bears 1905 date and facade seems consistent with that date. :bowtie:

A nice selection of xeriscapey plants, e_r! I see Washingtonia robusta, two variants of Agave americana, and I think the Yucca-y looking things are actually young Dracæna draco. The Aloes are blooming, and this species appears to be Aloe ican'tgetagoodlookatitsocan'ttellensis, a species which is photographed exceedingly commonly.

In the other post, yes, good work!, you have correctly identified Daisyicus fake-us tinicus, one of the many species in family Plasticaceæ, which is also represented in the pic by two specimens of the Orange Cone Plant, Conensis aurantiaca trafficæ.

I came across a small photoset (four images) at USC earlier, which shows 8th Street between Hope and Flower Streets in 1932. This one is looking west across Flower Street from just west of Hope Street.

The guy on the right, directly under the "CONGRESS" blade sign, caught my eye, so I zoomed in. The only lawn mower sharpener I can see in the 1932 CD is Frank E Houghtaling, with a business address at 8120 S Vermont Avenue and a home address at 610 W 46th Street. I assume the sharpener also did knives, because I can't imagine that there were many lawn mowers at 8th and Flower!

Many years ago I used to drive by that motel and think "Gosh, they must have named it that for the 1963 TV series 'The Farmer's Daughter', because I see CBS Television City right across the street, so the show gotta must have done aired on CBS."

Boy, I thought I was clever! I felt like such a schmuck when I found out "The Farmer's Daughter" actually aired on ABC.

BTW, Happy 96th Birthday to Grauman's Egyptian Theatre.
