Excellent sleuthing everyone !!!!!!
http://imageshack.com/a/img923/2196/My5hgz.gif Beaudry, Lorendoc (you had the wrong bank but you gave it the ol' college try ;)), Gaylord Wilshire & HossC. __ t2, was it the mid-1960s when you took the kids to Greystone? (I ask because as you no doubt noticed, the Times pic was dated 1965) Now I'm really baffled about the playhouse. sidenote: I would go up to Greystone to read back in the 1980s. -away from noisy traffic and extremely quiet....with no one else around. Before I'd leave I would make sure to peek in all the windows for ghosts. I've never been inside (except in movies and television shows) And one more thing t2, thanks for clearing up that Evelyn Nesbit/grandson quote about the censored artwork. |

Much to my surprise it's still there and still in the same spot! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...923/s1MEeM.jpg gsv Does anyone if this is the same cross or a replica? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...923/blQCCJ.jpg gsv_zoom If Los Angeles had a harsher climate it would have rusted away into nothingness by now. ______ sidenote: We've previously discussed the redesign of the bell tower on NLA. (if I remember correctly by t2) (unfortunately I can't find the post right now) -so I can't supply the link. |
I don't believe we have seen this photograph on NLA.
'mystery' diner. [Los Angeles?] http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/uYQiT8.jpg http://horrorunlimited.blogspot.co.u...6f56052fb66b70 I found this last night on a blog from the U.K. (the caption simply says a diner in CA) there's a mural in the corner that made me think 'medieval', say Old King Cole (cape, pointy shoes and ermine collar) blurry http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/aliuWA.jpg detail I know there's a King Cole mural in NYC, were there similar murals in Los Angeles? I feel like we might have discussed it here NLA) -also note the distinct 'wave' tiles. ____________ Here's a second image I don't remember seeing before. "Newspaper boy holding papers" [1947] http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/JAnewE.jpg I'm not sure which 'Confession' the headline is referring to. There were several & they all proved false. Go here to see the complete U.K. Black Dahlia post [WARNING: Graphic Content] http://horrorunlimited.blogspot.co.u...6f56052fb66b70 __ |
This is one of Julius Shulman's later photosets. It's "Job 5611: Art Ansoorian, Kubota Tractor Company (Compton, Calif.), 1978".
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original I've lightened this second image a little. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original I think this garden area was around the back. This time I've stayed with the color images. Two of the black & white images are similar to the color ones, and the other two just have different angles. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute Kubota relocated to Torrance around 1993, but have since moved to Texas. The building, however, is still standing at 550 W Artesia Boulevard, Compton. It's hard to get a good picture from the road, so I went with an aerial view. If the garden still exists, it's under the large trees behind the right side of the front building. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original Google Maps |

From that linK: "In 1958, Los Angeles City College issued a dictum against Bermuda shorts. Students questioned the fairness in a story by the United Press. "Some of the drama students are allowed to go around in beards," one student protested. A dean of the school told the UP, "One day last year a boy came to school in something like a bikini ... We can't have that — we have to draw the line some place." I'd like to see a photo of that! :) ___________ In the same vein, though: https://media.npr.org/assets/img/201...adb7.jpg?s=400 |

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/9wWDCY.jpg ebay Mystery of the giant red feather Back in 2014 I posted a black and white photo that shows the same feather. http://skyscraperpage.com/forum/show...ostcount=25206 Unless I'm mistaken, we never figured out it's purpose. __ |
The red feather was the symbol of the Community Chests, predecessor to the United Way.
Cheers, Earl |

Hmmm. I don't even know if it was on NBC, but perhaps it was a promotion for Cheyenne? Wasn't Cheyenne raised by injuns or some such? Feathers--Native Americans...bows and arrows. must be some reason Clint came to mind. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/z0...w=w499-h648-no |

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/i1...A=w659-h293-no Oh well, I suppose the Community Chest makes more sense, Earl, rather than Clint's. Now I can see that the feather at NBC appears to be made into a graph to indicate the progress of fund-raising. |
:previous: Good eye GW. I didn't notice the graph. (looks like they're halfway to their goal)
& thanks for naming the charity Earl. -much appreciated _____ |

GW's pictures look OK in Google Chrome, but when I create a response, the ultra-long URLs show up, mildly annoying.

Mystery location
Another from the Daily News, labeled "Team photo of the California Golden Bears a few days before their victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 24th Rose Bowl Game, December 29, 1937." Beefcake does not seem to go unappreciated here.
http://i.imgur.com/oxVIAvx.jpg UCLA Special Collections I wondered where this was taken. Did they stay up north for training? The background looks pretty desolate. But I took a look from the Rose Bowl: and saw this: http://i.imgur.com/Y0yrFHg.jpg Google Earth which matches the ridgeline and the radio or electrical towers seen here: http://i.imgur.com/GqK6c9J.jpg and concluded they were in Brookside Park. |
