It looks like e_r and myself posted at the same time.

We discussed the YMCA in Pasadena last November. Here are two follow-up posts I found, although I thought someone had posted current pictures as well:

I found a couple Sam Slater locations

Hope that helps,

Casey

I remember the Broadway building too, vaguely - I was just a lad in the 80's. Broadway ended up moving across the street to the Plaza Pasadena, a hideous and poorly planned mall that cut the Pasadena Civic Auditorium off from the rest of civic center when it was built directly over Garfield Avenue (it covered Euclid as well). It was torn down in 2000. I remember specifically because that's the year I graduated from high school and, while it was coming down, I was across the street at the civic auditorium for the graduation ceremony (think I have a few photos somewhere of myself with the old mall coming down behind me). It was replaced with the Paseo Colorado, an open air mall that was designed to harmonize more with the buildings in the civic center. The article about it on Wikipedia makes a brief mention of its predecessor.

Here's the NW corner of Los Robles Avenue & Green Street in 1986. This is the east end of the Plaza Pasadena, just one block down from the newer yellow building e_r posted the GSV of.

http://i1312.photobucket.com/albums/...pspoglelfe.jpgmy file

And, the same corner circa 1930 when it was occupied by the Pasadena Athletic Club:

http://i1312.photobucket.com/albums/...psepat640q.jpgPasadena Digital History

Sadly, this unique and imposing building had to come down in 1974, for the monstrosity of a mall that replaced it. :yuck:

Here's a shot looking down west down Colorado Boulevard from Oakland Avenue in the 1940's. We see the Broadway at left, and the parking lot that the photographer of e_r's shot must have been standing in. The Athletic Club and future site of Plaza Pasadena/Paseo Colorado is at left of the Broadway, just out of frame. I think I got this photo from here on NLA but I can't remember for sure.

http://i1312.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3werc0nv.jpgmy file

One other little tidbit to share: After the Broadway building was torn down, the site was a parking lot for many years, before that newer building was constructed. The city either owned the lot or rented spaces from the owner for their employees. In the early 2000's I was working at the Pasadena library, which you can also see (barely) in the 1940's shot. In the upper right of the photo, the grouping of three palm trees is located in the library's courtyard (still there to this day). So, every day I would walk from that parking lot to the library. It wasn't a fun walk on hot summer days...lol.

Plaza Pasadena

As I recall, not all of the former mall was leveled. Everything west of the Broadway portion was leveled. Probably due to the pedestrian bridge for the parking structure across Green St. They took out the dark colored windowed entrance seen in the 1986 view, and added the small shops that jut out along the Colorado Blvd side.

Another great find, ER but it is not the same location or shanty seen in your earlier picture. In this view note the presence of a (drum roll please) Wig-Wag to the left of the crossing watchman. In addition, we have a very good clue in the block number on North Main as seen in the street sign, and we were able to match the building in the background in Google Street View.

The LATL streetcar must now cross the LA river and trundle a few more blocks south to reach our previous location and Philippe's.

Oh heck yeah I remember this place! It is (was) called Hobby City; its on Beach Bl. in Anaheim a couple of miles south of Knott's BF. Back in the 1970's-80's it was a complex of small shops for all sorts of different kinds of hobbies; there was a gem shop, a coin collector's shop, a model shop, even a vintage firearms shop. The White House replica houses a doll museum, which was and still is every bit as creepy as it sounds with all those beady little eyes staring at you. :runaway:. Each shop had a "theme" design that tried to match what it sold. I can't recall what the building in the picture housed.

It was one of the first places I went after I got my driver's license in the 1970's--the model shop stocked all sorts of plastic models, which I was very much into back in the day. I must have went there close to 100 times. In fact, one of my last visits was in the late 1980's to buy a model of the Titanic, which took me many hours to build, and which sits in a niche at the top of our stairs to this day. :titanic:. Some time ago, they added a cheesy little amusement park called "Adventure City" to the frontage along Beach Bl, trying to cash in on the traffic between Knott's and Disneyland. It looks like its maybe one notch over a travelling carnie circus. Its just to the right of your photo.

I think most of the hobby shops have closed, but the creepy doll museum and the amusement park live on. Wow, I haven't thought about that place in years This makes me want to hop in the car tomorrow morning and check it out--I live about 10 miles away!

More 324 Clay

Should any wish to see a larger version of the original image-in-question, please go here.

After Beaudry identifed the twin-towered building as 324 Clay, I got intrigued and decided to look into it further.

This c. 1890 view from next to the Crocker Mansion reveals a third tower atop 324 Clay . . . .
http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...r.jpg~original
USCDL -- http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si.../id/2922/rec/5

But it actually had four towers! If you look closely at 324 Clay in this SW-facing photo (with twin-chimneyed 320 Clay to the right), the exterior walls are all the same, except for the north side of the first floor. See how the wall changes right above the edge of the foundation?:

USCDL -- http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si...id/2914/rec/74 (USC says c. 1895/1905, but my hunch is c. 1889)

I think that explains this c. 1886 photo looking NW from Hill Street up at Clay Street and the Crocker Mansion (1886) at 3rd and Olive. We see 320 Clay below and to the left from the Crocker Mansion, but the building next door at 324 Clay is not our multi-towered boarding house. The roof must have been removed and the building remodeled around 1886-87:

CA State Library -- http://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...IY89TLI8RV.jpg (CA State Library says 1887; LAPL has the same photo [00068195] and uses the 1886 date written on the photo)

http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...9.jpg~original
June 27, 1894 LA Times

324 Clay seems to have begun life as 22 Clay (below, next to the big 34), first appearing in the LA City Directory in 1884 as the home of Azel Farnsworth. By 1886, widow Mrs. A. K. Farnsworth is living there with seven Normal School students. In 1887, Mrs. Farnsworth is gone and George Roughton, among others, resides at 22 Clay. The change from 22 to 324 Clay was due to the change in street numbering that LA put into effect in 1890:

Trivia Question: What was the name of Clay Street before it was changed to Clay in June 1883? (answer at bottom)

If you see multi-towered 324 Clay in a photo, you can be confident that photo was taken no later than July 1, 1894. Because on the morning of July 2, 1894 . . .

I jut saw ethereal_reality's interesting post about CBS Studio Center, which was previously Rebuplic Studios (post # 14809 - page 745):

It turns out, there was also a Mack Sennett Studio in the San Fernando Valley.

I was wondering if there are any other historic photos of the development of the studio and its history over the last couple of decades.

Totally forgot - you're absolutely right, they kept the east end of the mall and remodeled it somewhat. Thus, what we see in the 1986 shot still stands, pretty much. At the time the Paseo was built, it was a Macy's, though it closed recently - last year I think.

I just happened to have the 1960 CD open myself when I saw this picture. As e_r said, Sam Slater Lumber and Hardware was at 5850 W Washington Boulevard, while just across the street at 5835 W Washington Boulevard was the Culver Infant Service.

Here's roughly the same view today. I've checked Historic Aerials, and the current building on the right appears to be the old Sam Slater building, which has been there since sometime between 1952 and 1964 when Adams was realigned. Seeing as e_r found Sam Slater at 5851 W Washington in the 1956 CD, it was probably built between 1956 and 1964.

Here's a better view of the Infant Service building. The square-roofed building behind it is also still there, but the "lighthouse-like" tower has gone. From a distance I thought it was still standing, but it turned out to be a cellphone mast a little further back.

stretching from Tujunga Avenue and Pacoima Avenue (later Laurel Canyon Boulevard), Ventura Boulevard to Chandler Way in 1926,

T.P.J., now that I reread your post, I believe you're interested in the more recent history of CBS Studio Center (like when Falcon Crest filmed there).
Does anyone have the more recent history and photos of CBS Studio Center (to help out our new member?) :)
__

p.s. I worked for Lorimar, but I worked at MGM where we filmed 'Dallas" and "Knots Landing", so I have less information on 'Falcon Crest' (since they filmed in the valley and Napa Valley)
The closest I got to Falcon Crest was a gala at the Biltmore (downtown) celebrating their 100th (or was it 200th) episode. I knew Jane Wyman because she was close with my boss, the head of publicity for Lorimar. One day he had me ride with Jane Wyman to LAX (in a limo!) to help with her luggage and such. She had sunglasses on and a ''turban' on her hair and was very nice and very fragile even back then. I helped her to the lounge where she introduced me to Bob Newhart (he was the only one in the lounge). When she introduced me, she made it sound like I was her good friend even though I had just met her.

I also attended a function for Falcon Crest at some mansion above Sunset Blvd. (I wish I could remember which mansion). I rode with the publicist for Falcon Crest and we picked up
Susan Sullivan on the way, and took her home afterwards. The party was mostly around the pool.
