Seriously, "Sylvia Park" is a small unincorporated community in Topanga Canyon adjacent to the late actor Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum. Geer is best remembered for playing grandpa Walton on T.V. of course, and an old mountain man in "Jeremiah Johnson" who taught young Jeremiah (Rbt. Redford) survival skills. :wiseman: |

Katherine's Kitchen, spelled incorrectly, is noted on this Topanga map from the 1930's. It was at the junction of Topanga Canyon Road (Blvd) and Cheney Drive. https://i.imgur.com/gGnpLdm.jpg topangahistoricalsociety.org |

In Los Angeles I like: The Red Lion Tavern! There's a Beer Garden on the roof. It opened in 1959 as an English Pub. In 1963, a new owner, whose wife was German, changed it to a German Tavern. https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/LofR...12.14_PM.0.pngL.A.Eater |

Remember the 1974 Mateo Explosion slides from a week ago....And Here This one for example. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/923/zRWDUd.jpg eBay . .and this. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/QoDqnL.jpg eBay It's the former National Biscuit Company Building (later NABISCO) (I thought it looked familiar) located at Mateo and Industrial Streets. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/922/kWL9u3.jpg Nat. Biscuit Co. via pinterest . . .and when the building was under construction in 1923 or 24. "Biscuit Company Lofts offers the most exciting lofts in the best historic building in Downtown Los Angeles. “The Biscuit” is the transformation of the 1925 National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) West Coast bakery. The building is a show-stopper and it features 13- to 28-foot ceilings, refinished 80-year-old maple floors, orange brick walls, and unique terra cotta, granite and copper details. Nabisco spent $2,000,000 building this bakery in 1925 and it shows." A mystery snapshot. ...Does anyone recognize this movie theater? "Los Angeles,Calif. around 1926,parade,Indian Chief, movie theatre, Kohler Art Std." https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...922/fMND4I.jpg https://www.ebay.com/itm/28453308758...GH1hlZmT"]eBay The seller included details that aren't as blurry. Shall we look at them? OK, then. :) This first one give you a better look at the Kohler Art Studio. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/KWnU91.jpg Here's a closer look at the arch of the theater entrance. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/vrmuC8.jpg Lastly, here's a closer look at the indian chief and his horse. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/63gqNX.jpg Is it just me or does the horse look like it's one-third cow and two-thirds horse. . . .not to mention its cartoon eyes. . |

Last week when we were trying to figure out the location of the photographer when he took the photograph of the Ambassador Hotel the Piccadilly Apartments came into play. Here's a slide from the late 1970s(?) that captures the Piccadilly P. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/vLTeSV.jpg eBay As you can see it looks like it's part of the modern building. (is it a parking garage?) This second slide, if I remember correctly, was being sold with the first slide is somewhat of a mystery. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/dzoLOt.jpg eBay I was surprised to see a cafeteria on what appears to be a side-street. Blank House Cafeteria & Coffee Shop. . |

You can get near the current location on Google Maps. The Holland House site is now home to Mrs Cs BBQ. |
.
Thanks Hoss. :) Judging by the church bell-tower in this 1970 night view I'd say the Holland House was in the vicinity of my red arrow. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/wOhFUm.jpg lapl The location is. .to say the least. .odd. Another view of Central Plaza, 3440 - 3470 Wilshire Blvd. (the former Tishman complex) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/PaUhOI.jpg planning.lacity So what's up with the building in the back. ..I didn't even know it was there. Here? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/3TKm1e.jpg Hubbard House above the red arrow. . |

GW has this great photograph of the Tishman complex nearing completion on his blog Wilshire Houses. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/pwhMZK.jpg Link. note the workers. . |

L.A. High School atop Poundcake Hill, with the Jones Block in the foreground, in an image cropped from a stereographic photo card.....undated but likely about 1875. There's two striped poles in front of the saloon....in the Old West barbers would sometimes ply their trade out of chairs set up in the rear of such establishments....the sign is promoting something for .25 cents, possibly "Shave and a Haircut two bits"..... The printing building housed the presses for the L.A. Daily Herald (est. 1873), the first paper in the city to utilize the steam powered rotary press....the machine revolutionized the newspaper industry.... https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds A later photo of the Jones Block and school, c. 1880-1885.... https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds Back in 2011 e_r posted a similar photo of the high school, that post included a lovely 1938 letter from a Mrs. Hamilton, wherein she recalled the difficulty of ascending to the school when the weather turned inclement, the post is here.....https://skyscraperpage.com/forum/sho...ll#post5134679 The original stereo card.... https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds Additional L.A. stereo images out of this collection at U.C. AlvaroLegido: More on Veloz & Yolanda's studio is in the story of 3500 Wilshire Boulevard. You can read more about them on NLA itself by searching for "Yolanda" or "Veloz" (BTW, has the search feature here gotten better than I remember it being?) The house has connections to the LA Soap Company, which we've explored here over the years. Here's the house and the boulevard before the Tishmans arrived from New York: https://i.postimg.cc/26CCdTb8/3500wi...51x551-bmp.jpghttps://i.postimg.cc/VL82J5tm/3500yo...14x478-bmp.jpg |

An original slide from the 1970s recently listed on eBay. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/6Lb14y.jpg search purposes:...1970s Los Angeles Street Scene, Walgreens...Original 35mm SLIDE. Here's a closer look. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/Cr5RpV.jpg eBay At first glance I wasn't sure this was Los Angeles (and I'm still not 100% sure) What, pray tell, is this? mystery slide. Here's another original slide also found on eBay. I happened upon it a week (or so) ago and now I can't find it again. If I remember correctly, the seller said that the slide was taken in the Mid-Wilshire area / Koreatown. As you can see, it's not that great of a slide but if you concentrate on the right side of the photograph there's something intriguing going on. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/VX0YP0.jpg eBay Judging by the wood fence-like barrier constructed around the houses I thought they were about to be torn down for a larger project. Here's a closer look. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/MWo1Ch.jpg detail hmmm. . .but now not so sure. What I thought was a construction barrier might actually be a. .um. .parking garage? . . .a one-story parking garage  (of course the bottom level could be below-grade / slightly underground) If that's the case, the houses are just beyond the structure. I'm hoping someone recognizes the street corner so we can figure out what's going on in the old slide. .and to see if the old houses are still there. Thanks. :) or :whip: . |
