Ninth and Spring - The Garland Building. Questions . . . questions . . . Curious about this building's bedding. Not clear what it rests on, bedrocked pilings, bricks and mortar, or maybe even both. To the right in the first photograph there are white brick structures that vaguely resemble backyard incinerators. (Significance of initials "GD," graffiti?) Assembled bricks may may be preexisting supports for a predecessor structure or adjacent structure/roadbed. It looks like they did not survive by the third photo. Fourth photo shows steel beams protruding from the ground, suggesting they are anchored to . . . something. (What did this building replace?) In the first photo the old brick pilasters were probably supported on concrete piers. By the third photo the pilasters have been removed and shoring placed along the sides to prevent caving. The steel columns would have been anchored to reinforced concrete piers which may have been 30 feet or more deep depending on the depth of bedrock. I would presume they secured the three street exposures with a concrete retaining wall but the building supports on the adjacent brick buildings would have been independent so not to place any stress on the brick. |

I wonder what Chase Bank has done with their half dome? Plaza Substation looked HUGE before the church and Biscailuz Building were built in the mid-20s. The Methodists bought and demolished the Olvera Adobe in 1916 and first built some one-story buildings. The LA County Assessor seems to indicate The President was remodeled in 1935; perhaps that's when the sign was added. It looks like they redid the entrance, too (compare with GSV): http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...ps997c4988.jpg |

Previously posted images seem to have evaporated. If this is duplication, sorry. In bottom photo notice the tower's top seems to be adorned with a glass globe, or some sort of spherical framework. Expect it may have been illuminated. Reminds me of a plasma ball popular in the '80s. In later images, e.g., first photo, the globe was replaced by the more typical metal orb. http://photos.cinematreasures.org/pr...jpg?1312825062http://photos.cinematreasures.org/pr...jpg?1312825062 The way things were in '32, evidently before Merlo's (to the west - or left). http://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...M5RUQ3YRXG.jpghttp://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...M5RUQ3YRXG.jpg http://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...GNQRLS7VTM.jpg http://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...GNQRLS7VTM.jpg http://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...JJAPX6C7A5.jpghttp://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...JJAPX6C7A5.jpg http://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...KQ3EK3CD6P.jpghttp://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...KQ3EK3CD6P.jpg |

The 1936 Chev. is a nice car but the 1935 was neater as it was the only year they had Suicide front doors, just my opinion.
