Aerial photos kick butt.
Here's two of Austin by our own LoneStarMike on the forum. http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/f...December40.jpg Photo by LoneStarMike http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/f...December39.jpg Photo by LoneStarMike |
Some of these aren't the most traditional areas, but are some of the better ones I can find:
Detroit http://farm1.static.flickr.com/159/4...5c52b8a8_o.jpg gab42 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3301/...08011064_b.jpg Applejack25 One of the more unflattering angles of the downtown... http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3321/...f9642f68_b.jpg Applejack25 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3548/...e2bffe53_b.jpg Opacity |

Cool Thanks Guys!
|
That first shot of Detroit is great. Any one of those buildings would be a landmark in Austin, in Detroit they don't even stand out.
|
That Houston photo is way outdated.

Google the Trinity River flood plain, take a look at a map of Fort Worth, and then also try and tone down your perpetual and incredible negative judging of everything that doesn't match up perfectly to your tender and undeniably smug sensibilities and worldview...Jeeze.

lol, do you two know each other from somewhere?
|
This is only based on the black and white photos I've seen posted on other forums, but I think a lot of downtown was surrounded by low rise industrial and rail uses and gritty working class areas. Nothing terribly exciting.
"Hell's half acre" had it survived could have been a cool gentrification opportunity though. However that AFAIK was torn down to build the convention center and water gardens, not just left as vacant land. Also some things were saved, like the T&P depot |

Holy shit look how lush & GREEN The Woodlands is from above!!! Absolutely nothing else like it in Texas that's for sure. Where else can you find a superbly planned master community combined with dense urban development & a 450 ft. tall lone skyscraper popping up out of the woods? Not to mention an absolutely beautiful championship golf course & top notch performance venue.
