I didn't realize it used be known as the Hotel Iris....that was news to me. __ |

Some Interesting Buildings in South Central
Here are a few Google streetview shots of three buildings in the neighborhood where I grew up that have a distinctive look to them.
This is an apartment building currently undergoing a total interior renovation. Located 4775 Broadway, tax rolls indicate this building was erected in 1919. The ghost sign says "Anderson Apartments" http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/879...bdway1919a.jpg gsv Located on the same block, taking up the majority of the block's length, is this structure built in 1928. It features some detailed ornamental ironwork around the second story windows. I used to walk past this building every day while attending grammar school nearby. Storefronts are numbered starting at 4759 Broadway. The corridor down Broadway from Vernon Avenue to Slauson was for many years a vibrant business section. Many of the stores and business were victimized during the 1965 riots, and the entire area suffered. http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/7...plbway128b.jpg gsv Across from the Olympic Swimming Stadium at the corner of Menlo Avenue and Santa Barbara/MLK Avenue is this small medical office building. It is good example of streamline moderne applied to a smaller structure. I remember this used to be tan/offwhite in color; the present signage and yellow paint doesn't enhance the professional services being offered. It was built in 1938. http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/1806/menloa.jpg gsv |

:previous: That's such a great photograph Flyingwedge. Kids must have loved it with the little rail-cars going up and down. I just found out the substation that supplied the electricity for the Mt. Lowe Scenic Railway still stands in Altadena. http://imageshack.us/a/img812/6072/a...g1147difal.jpg gsv http://imageshack.us/a/img542/6313/a...g1147difsu.jpg http://www.triposo.com/poi/Pacific_E...station_No2e_8 "The Pacific Electric Company Substation Number 8 was built in 1905 on N.Lake Avenue just north of E. The Pacific Mutual parking garage on May 1st 1926.(as we've recently discussed/the garage is now known as the Carriage House)
A good look at the Grand Ave. facade minus today's trees. http://imageshack.us/a/img199/5030/p...garageaddi.jpg I found this on an old cd of mine. probably lapl or usc. __ |

I see the second level windows open. I never took notice - is the entire building above and below ground a garage or is parking underground? |

Then Raji's was sold and the new owner tried to make it a bar/club hybrid. Nobody I know goes there anymore. |

Thanks tovangar2 for the great info on the beautiful Pacific Mutual Garage. I wanted to post this garage as a contrast. It's on Broadway between 7th and 8th. Last week I noticed cars parked up at the edge on the roof. I'm surprised no one has driven off. http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/6...dway7th8th.jpg GSV photo |

The drawing is of the Maier & Zobelein brewery on the west side of the Los Angeles River. Zoebelein quit that one in 1907 and started his Eastside brand over at the Los Angeles Brewing Company on the east side of the river (shown in the photo, now the arts complex). http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=10485 http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=10490 |

I hope you all will indulge me and answer a question I've had for a long time. I'm confused by the scene in Criss Cross (1949) where the armored truck is loaded and leaves the Pacific Mutual garage. As it leaves the camera follows it through a window directly above the exit ramp, which appears to be part of a skylight structure. Nothing like this is there now nor was in my memory. I see no sign of it in e_r's construction photo. Are we really inside the garage or is this a very good set and back-projection effort or what? There are some cuts, but basically it's one continuous scene coming down the stairs from the second floor (or a mezzanine) counting room until the truck turns north on Grand. I cannot get my Google car to stop in exactly the right place so I can look down into the garage exit (and never thought to explore further when I was actually on Grand Ave). I hope this doesn't take forever to load. Thx.
Nice screen. It opens automatically: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-a...536%2520AM.jpg Kenneth Patterson and Griff Bennett exit the counting room with the cash: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-i...743%2520AM.jpg Patterson's told he has to leave for home right away: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-3...814%2520AM.jpg Patterson hands off the money bags to Burt Lancaster: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-q...945%2520PM.jpg Bennett and Lancaster head down the stairs. Note the very utilitarian railing: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-K...939%2520AM.jpg Lancaster and Bennett cross to the truck over some oddly luxe flooring: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-J...956%2520AM.jpg Lancaster stuffs Bennentt and the cash in the back of the truck: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-G...044%2520AM.jpg Lancaster gets in the driver's seat. Note the translucent exit doors to the garage: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-h...108%2520AM.jpg The doors automatically slide open as the camera pans up (I don't note any drain at the bottom of the ramp): https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-p...141%2520AM.jpg We can now see the ramp through a window with decorative crossbars: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-N...214%2520AM.jpg We now see the top of the truck through the window and the Mayfair/Checkers Hotel across Grand: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-0...424%2520PM.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-j...257%2520AM.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-P...325%2520AM.jpg (?) |
