I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but the the river-front space shown will be public (in fact, it already is, minus for the part under construction). You can go get an overpriced pour-over from Blue Bottle Coffee and drink it on a bench by the river right now.

I don't know what side is the "left side" but all development within 100 feet of the river edge requires a planned development that aligns to everything listed here: https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/dept...es-update.html

Not all riverwalk will look like the section downtown on the main branch.

Its easier to see the texture change of the glass here from the ledge on the setback around the 50th and up.

When this is done, the 805' 1000M will be the tallest under-construction building in Chicago. Hopefully 400 Lake Shore Drive (875') and Lakeshore East Parcel I (at least 950') will keep the current boom going.

Exciting day. Looking forward to seeing how it looks with those vertical lines matching WPE.

Great close up of the larger fins on the top floors as well. Thanks Solar.

Because he's such a chubby boy.

That's the problem with office towers today, they all have to be obese to be attractive to tenants.

It better be (and I think it will) - especially since the setbacks provide convenient places to mount the lighting. Salesforce SF has the entire crown as an LED screen that displays artwork so SalesForce I think is very pro lighting.

https://sf-towertopart.com/

Also the lobby is supposed to have video screens I think (similar to the SF lobby as well.)

See https://www.333wolfpoint.com/gallery/ for pics. I'm really looking forward to this but haven't seen too many details about it.

Will the fins on the glazing be installed all the way down? or only the upper floors? I'm not too hopeful about the larger ones being illuminated given that east's never were and are very similar, hope to be proved wrong! would love to see them be able to change color and match the rest of the city on special dates or give a little show like the new one atop sears

that's not really a new development in chicago.

the chunky office tower has been the default program in this town since the '50s.

Their current placement of the fins matches renders of them only being on the top 10 floors or so. So I'm pretty confident they will not be going lower than that.

WPE is a fully residential building while WPS is fully commercial. There aren't many residential buildings that have lighting programs that I can think of so I don't think it's a good litmus test. Salesforce being a commercial entity will want their name on the building attractively displayed at night. Also this dusk render appears to show it illuminated (https://www.hines.com/properties/sal...-south-chicago), but I'm not sure about the color lighting. But I'd be shocked if it wasn't part of the city's coordinated lighting program given Salesforce's elaborate lighting on their San Francisco tower and the prominent location of this tower here.

Also, does it feel like they sed a fair bit of the setbacks originally planned for the front? looks like 3/4 instead of the 5/6 rendered on the hines site.

BrinChi Aug 18, 2022 3:25 PM

^ I think it's still too early to make that conclusion. The setbacks are pretty subtle even in the renderings so until the glass is up I don't think we can say if the design changed a bit.

Longer than that... the quarter-block office towers from the 1910s and 1920s with light courts were seen as pretty chunky too, especially compared to NYC's towers from that era which were less boxy and usually had more of a wedding cake form (Woolworth, etc).

When NYC did get a chonky Chicago-style tower - the Equitable Building, designed by a Chicago architect - everyone lost their sh*t and they reformed the zoning code to mandate wedding-cake design.

The 1800s actually. The foreign journalists back then often said, “Wow, those are some chonky office buildings.â€

Probably predates the skyscraper itself even. In the 1870s, there’s discussion of the unusual size and extent of the warehouses.

Right, the relatively large block size of downtown Chicago has long led to pretty beefy buildings of all heights, but when I was talking about office "towers", I meant buildings over 500' tall (my apologies for not being more clear), and all of chicago's pre-war 500+ footers have some form of tapering massing as they rise.

The Prudential building was really the first "big" office tower in chicago (ie. >500') to completely embrace the MCM aesthetic of the big fat wide box-tower, a very basic and economical form repeated countless times (with different curtain wall dressing) over the past 7 decades.

rivernorthlurker Aug 20, 2022 1:24 AM

For any that haven't taken this walk, this is an incredible showcase of the confluence and way to experience this 'new' part of the city. Even better at night.

could have been my eyes deceiving me but it looks like they were testing the crown lighting on the west side of the building they have made quite a bit of progress with the scalloped panels covering the mechanical penthouse... I took a photo on my phone but it came out not great... anyone else see the top tonight around sundown?

I'm pretty sure that's just the sunset/twilight from the west reflecting on the building.

FYI a permit was issued for an 8 floor buildout here on Thursday for an estimated cost of $25.35M. Owner on the permit is Salesforce..

There's a request section called "Building Requests & Database Corrections" near the bottom of the main forum page. Not sure if the people who update diagrams are reading this thread.

Kinda - but not paid. You'd have to find an event to go to (or throw one yourself).

The top floor of the Salesforce Chicago Tower will feature an Ohana Floor, meaning that the space will be available during non-business hours for nonprofits and foundations to use at no cost. As Salesforce EVP of Real Estate Elizabeth Pinkham explains, “When we approach our real estate, we design our offices as spaces that feel like home, where we can welcome our entire Ohana (“family†in Hawaiian). This includes our employees, customers, partners and the communities in which we live and work … In a typical office setting, the top floor is often dedicated for executive offices. Instead, we take the most sought after floors and design them as open flexible hospitality spaces. During the day, our Ohana Floors are open for employee events and then on weeknights and weekends, these one-of-a-kind spaces with jaw-dropping views are made available for nonprofits and foundations at no cost — aligning with our values of giving back.†Ohana Floors can be found across Salesforce’s named towers globally and to date, events in these spaces have raised nearly $10M for charity.

That last shot really does reinforce my opinion that this building's best angle is from the North Branch of the river. It has this perfect angle that compliments WPE and has the loop behind it as a coat tail. Love the shot.

After digging around more, I realized that 835 ft is correct. Thus, would the original poster or the admins please correct the height in the thread title? Thanks.

Even at 835 ft, Salesforce Tower is still taller than 100 North Wacker, making it the tallest office-only building completed in Chicago since 1990. See CTBUH's list here: https://www.skyscrapercenter.com/exp...y=&output=list

The 835' figure is old and likely outdated.

Midway through construction two floors near the top got height increases adding roughly 15' to the tower.

It's all documented here in this thread somewhere.

The core topped out at 840' according to the construction team at Walsh. Then the additional 10' is the architectural top.

Though they do qualify 'approximately.' And maybe more notably is this is 'Level 61.' Everything else says 60. If anything maybe the change really needs to be from 60 to 61? I'd be curious what the details are about that.

This week, the concrete core for Chicago’s Salesforce Tower reached its full height, marking a key milestone for this 60-story skyscraper rising at 333 W Wolf Point Plaza along the confluence of the Chicago River. As noted in a LinkedIn post by the general contractor Walsh Construction, the final height of the core stands 840 feet, falling in line with recent speculation of a 15-foot height bump. Furthermore, it appears that the final architectural height of the edifice will now be 850 feet above the river walk, once the superstructure is accounted for.
