oldstuff, at first I was like....who the heck is Jimmie Slayback?

I was concentrating so much on the buildings I forgot all about the billboards.

It is still there and was located at 1371 1/2 W. 25th St. The numbering has changed somewhat and is now 1367 w. 25th. They were built in 1929 and are still outwardly the same for the most part, with the exception (at least from the street) of the addition of new aluminum windows on the street side. The building has narrow arched gates with Spanish tile over them at each side and arches over each front door in the front section of the building. Originally they were numbered 1371 and 1371 1/2 and these were the front two apartments. No telling now which was which.

Here's Jimmie Slayback's rather noirish looking apartment.

* I believe that the photo in the book and the one posted here were printed from the same negative but cropped differently. The left edge of the photo in the book bisects e-r's "tough little boy", who can be seen striking the same pose. And as the photo in the book shows the area behind the cars as well, I can see that there are rails there, which leads me to conclude that they've sunk into the dirt beneath the cars. Thus, it appears that their wheels are resting on dirt.

** A "troller" is an electrical current-collecting predecessor arrangement of what we think of as a trolley.

The section below from the 1888 Sanborn Map shows Pico jogged at Main (red X) but not at Maple (blue X).
Ahead of the streetcar appears to be either a T intersection or a jog, so I think the photo probably shows
Pico and Main rather than Pico and Maple.

Thanks for the link about the 1993 fires in Malibu, Earl. Considering the fire was over 20 years ago, the driveway and gates still look well maintained.

Just like I did with the Good Shepherd Convent pictures a few days ago, I took a gamble on this Julius Shulman location being in LA. This is "Job 1060: Laurel Medical Center, 1951".

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original

Is it just me, or would this place look like a motel if you removed the caduceus?

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original

As well as the separate treatment rooms, it had its own pharmacy.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original

Here's a look around the back.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original

At night it looks even more like a motel (IMHO).

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original

I've left out a few of the exterior views, and the interior ones which just show waiting areas. Now rinse and spit!

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original

All from Getty Research Institute

There are a lot of Laurel Medical Centers in the US, but the number in the second picture helped me find this one at 3959 Laurel Canyon Boulevard, Studio City, just south of Ventura Boulevard. The pharmacy is now a hair removal studio, but it's still a medical center.

"A high ridge at the top of the Malibu Mountains was home to Windcliff, Masterpiece of architect Jim Moore, AIA, Principal of Medical Planning Associates.
They designed hospitals at the request of the Shah of Iran and the Saudi Royal Family. Jim was a
mentor who helped me with many of the business details of home building. What I built for Windcliff was a 6 car garage, motor home bay and a guest house. The main house and a 7 car garage were already built. Did I mention the 20 foot wooden wine vat that was perched on the rocky outpost overlooking Malibu Colony? It was used as a swimming pool. Jim Moore sold MPA and moved to Lake Tahoe. I accepted the mission of selling his home. Doing business as The Home Team, I was the youngest Real Estate Broker in Malibu at this time, I suggested that my moving into Windcliff with my billiard table and a few cars would help the sale. We didn’t call it staging in late 70’s. It worked and sadly I had to move. The 13 garage bays were filled with the new owners Ferrari’s. Alas, all was lost in the Malibu fire."

The Tudor-esque building directly opposite the end of Barham is 3201 N. Cahuenga. The LA County Assessor

You can see a corner of 3201 N. Cahuenga at the middle left edge of this c. 1930s photo looking NE over the

I came across Windcliff several times when I was looking for an address for the Medical Planning Associates offices I posted a couple of days ago. The original Windcliff building was actually on Brown Latigo Road. Today the property seems to be known as Windcliff Ranch. The dark-roofed building on the right matches the closest one on e_r's picture, so maybe it survived the fire. The property appears to available to rent - there are pictures on Instagram.

If you ask me, the whole thing is way too large to put in your front yard.

These gates have been attributed to Paul Williams by one historian; whether or not Williams designed anything that was actually built at the end of the driveway is unclear. But at least one historian claims that he designed Murphy
Ranch in Rustic Canyon, supposedly a bunker for Nazi sympathizers and intended to be the headquarters for Hitler's eventual takeover of the U.S.: See Huffington Post and LACurbed.

I know it was touched on a year or so ago:

The exterior and interior of the powerhouse. Did Williams design this? Was the 22-bedroom
main house he drew up ever built?

And more here:

I can find no reference in an admittedly cursory check of any reference to Paul Williams having designed this on any sites devoted to his work.

As a purely coincidental noir and an admittedly attenuated followup to GW's and other posts on the subject, in 1934, a Mr. and Mrs. Lindbergh of "Spirit of St. Louis" fame, were staying at Will Rogers' (nearby) Pacific Palisades home, when news broke that an arrest had been made in connection with the kidnapping of Lindbergh's first born. Not saying there is any connection between Rogers, Lindbergh and the happenings at the so-called Murphy Ranch. However, one wonders if Rogers (who tragically died in 1935) had any knowledge about the development of his former real estate holding and whether he harbored any opinions thereof. Lindbergh's knowledge and opinions, especially with the benefit of (America First) hindsight are probably more open to debate.

As referenced in GW's post the Murphy Ranch saga can be found here: http://la.curbed.com/2014/9/24/10043...red-nazi-ranch here: https://socalhiker.net/murphy-ranch-the-nazi-compound-in-rustic-canyon/"]https://socalhiker.net/murphy-ranch-...rustic-canyon/[/URL] and here: http://io9.gizmodo.com/5894347/the-a...ilt-for-hitler and here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...id=maing-grid7 FWIW, the remaining structures were reportedly destined for demolition as of February 2016. Ostensibly, Ms. Murphy was wealthy heiress who wanted to build a mansion back in the secluded Rustic Canyon on land purchased from Will Rogers. Records suggest that there never was a “Ms. Murphy” (although the name stuck) and in fact, the Silver Shirts — a pro-Nazi organization — was building a self-sufficient compound where they could ride out World War II until Hitler finally won. Obviously, things didn’t turn out as they planned.

The day after Pearl Harbor, the compound was seized and the inhabitants arrested. But 80 years later, many of the structures and artifacts from the original compound remain. Hiking back to Murphy Ranch is scenic, but also a fascinating glimpse of “Hidden LA.” https://socalhiker.net/murphy-ranch-...rustic-canyon/
