sigh.......i can't believe that all the links to photos that i posted yesterday are now unavailable due to USC's site being down for maintenance..........
hopefully the site will be back up soon, and the pictures will re-appear. could also possibly signal that they are updating the library, (which would be fantastic), hopefully it doesn't mean that they are re-organizing all the files, which would render all of our links to photographs there over the past two years moot. ****Update**** i was able to recover the images from the cache in my office computer, so i was able to upload them to flickr, and then replace the USC Digital Archive URL with the new flickr URL, so the photographs appear once more. from now on, all images that i find, i will upload them to flickr before posting here, to insure that the images stay put, even if the original site is down. |

I thought the only way to post photographs was through a photo hosting site (I use imageshack). I'm curious, how were you doing it before? And like you said, I hope they're adding new photographs. typically when i find photos on lapl or usc, i just right click on the photograph and select copy image location, then i copy that into the insert photo box. obviously, i will be (as i said before), uploading the photos on flickr prior to posting here.

That City Hall photo with the windows lit up as a cross is kind of spooky for some reason. It must have been a very different political vibe at that point in time. Hard to imagine that happening today. Then again, maybe not.

After further study of the above photo....I believe it is the Hill Street entrance to the Second Street tunnel.
The apartment building with the arched windows matches the above photo. The embedded clock doesn't seem to be embedded after all. Mush — sometimes called coosh — is a thick cornmeal pudding (or porridge) usually boiled in water or milk. It is often then fried after being cut up into flat squares or rectangles. Usage is especially common in the eastern and southeastern United States. It is also customary for those in the Midwestern US to eat it with maple syrup. House Moving
A few pages back there were some great photos of houses being moved....and even an entire apartment building, in three sections, if I recall.
And a couple months ago a spectacular series about one of the early LA schools being moved. The mover ran out of money, and there the school sat, high on its stilts for a while before finally reaching its destination. So................. What ever happened to house moving? You NEVER hear of anything like this anymore. Least not around these parts. :) I can only assume it must be a cost issue, considering any tractors and other vehicles one would need to do the moving are 10 times better than they were in, say, 1920. Plus a lot of utilities are underground. |
