Of course if someone grossly violates distancing rules they could theoretically be ticketed, but I assume they would first be warned.

Right, the actual orders regulate crowd formation, business operations, and access to public spaces. Those orders are not voluntary. The authorities are authorized to enforce those orders through the legal system.

In addition to those orders governments have issued recommendations, such as staying inside as much as possible. Since that is not an order, it isn't an issue of compliance. But that doesn't mean that won't eventually become an order, and at that point compliance will not be voluntary.

DeSantis is not getting the negative attention he deserves. I hope keeping everything open was worth it.

Sweden defies lockdown trend, bets on citizens acting responsibly

That's not quite a denial though, so much as it is just a different approach. This part is key:

"Public gatherings of more than 50 people are prohibited but there are no restrictions on private meetings, meaning parties and corporate events can still go ahead. Libraries and swimming pools remain open.

Standing at bars has been prohibited but restaurants are still able to offer table service. Students over 16 have been asked to study from home but kindergartens and elementary schools are still open.

Rather than wide-ranging restrictions, the authorities have instead advised the public to practice social distancing and to work from home, where possible, and urged those over the age of 70 to self-isolate as a precaution. In other words, the country has staked its bets on people acting responsibly."

And so far at least, they don't seem to be doing much worse than neighbouring countries. The long-term effects remain to be seen - but this may just prove to be enough to flatten the curve while still avoiding major economic & social upheaval. Or maybe it'll prove to be insufficient - who knows at this point. Either way, they're still doing something about it.

BTW, things are getting out of control pretty quickly in Sweden. There were a huge spike, with 59 deaths today, tracking Belgium and Netherlands path.

Even though Swedish streets are already quite empty with self-imposed quarentine, half of the country live alone (helping intrafamily transmission), large share of home office, they might change their policy pretty soon.

Bolsonaro is quickly losing public support as the centre-right is finally abandoning him. Brazil is a family-oriented society, with many multigenerational households and therefore most people are sympathetic to the quarentine measures even though people are aware they'll face an economic disaster on the next months.

Both Congress and Supreme Court are hostile to him as well, so I don't think an Hungarian solution would work here at this point.

I'm very happy to hear that. Brazilians don't deserve morr punishment on top of a very difficult situation.

The Spring Break Party State finally got on board:

Florida Issues Statewide Limits as U.S. Coronavirus Cases Mount
By Talal Ansari, Phred Dvorak and Paul Hannon
Updated April 1, 2020 2:37 pm ET

The U.S. neared 200,000 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, as infections in New York continued to climb and the list of statewide stay-at-home orders expanded to Pennsylvania and Florida, leaving a dwindling number of states without such measures.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he is issuing a statewide order Wednesday limiting movement outside the home only to essential services. Until now, he had deferred to individual cities and counties to implement stay-at-home orders, focusing on the hardest-hit areas and yielding a patchwork of policies across the state.

Mr. DeSantis faced intense pressure by health officials and elected leaders to impose a statewide ban. Florida was alone among states with large numbers of infections in not doing so. He said he reached the decision after consulting with President Trump’s coronavirus task force.

“At this point, I think even though there’s a lot of places in Florida that have very low infection rates, it makes sense to make this move now,” Mr. DeSantis said. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf announced a similar order . . . .

but it wasn't easy to get Gov. DeSantis to do it:

Email from Medical Board of CA

Quote:

On March 30, 2020 Governor Newsom issued Executive Order N-39-20, authorizing the Director of the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) to waive any of the professional licensing requirements relating to healing arts licensees in Division 2 of the Business and Professions Code, and any accompanying regulations. This includes, but is not limited to, the examination, education, experience, and training requirements necessary to obtain and maintain licensure, and requirements governing the practice and permissible activities for licensees.

The Medical Board of California (Board) is working closely with the Department of Consumer Affairs to determine which licensing requirement waivers would allow individuals to continue assisting with the COVID-19 pandemic and allow licensees regulated by the Board to maintain and renew a license and remain employed.

Current waivers in place are:

Examination and continuing education requirements for current healthcare licensees.
Reactivation requirements for inactive or retired licensees . . . .
I admit I'm more than a little relieved by the fact they only want people who've retired within 5 years. For me it's been at least 8. I admit I don't have the stamina or the guts for this.

I think we'll learn in the pandemic post-mortem that Florida was the source of major outbreaks in other parts of the country. It was probably a major fact in New York's. The New Rochelle resident that was the first known case of community spread in New York State said that he may have contracted it on a trip to Miami.

Isn't there a federal medical service sort of like this? They have ranks and everything. Chris I hope they alert the feds, you guys need some troops to supplement local forces.

Sometimes you just have to shake your head (or pull out your hair). I got this from my condo HOA today:

Quote:

There has been a question about the possibility of providing Homeowners with some form of a credit on Assessments as a result of the Recreational Facilities being closed during this Pandemic Period.
So I guess there are still clueless folks who want to sit together in a sauna or hot tub, with just 4 or 5 of their closest friends, maybe swill a little white wine and pretend it's all happening on another planet. I picture a scene very like Spring Break in Florida.

And these same folks don't understand they are the OWNERS of those closed facilities. It's their elected board representatives who closed them . . . for the good of us all. And their being closed doesn't reduce any HOA costs except maybe just a bit of electricity (to heat the hot tub and sauna and pool). Meanwhile, HOA costs for extra labor to sanitize common areas have increased.

New York's first community spread patient was identified in early March (goddamn, what a difference a month makes?!). He was the lawyer who had not traveled outside of the U.S. or had any known contact with anyone who tested positive for COVID-19. As far as I know, they still haven't definitively determined where he contracted the disease. But, I think it is reasonable to assume that the virus was spreading undetected around New York before him. In fact, even the governor has suggested this a number of times.
