but I didn't recall the brick building in the distance so I was thrown a bit. Here's another photograph of Watts Tower that I believe is new to NLA. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...921/eMBd1m.jpg https://esngblog.files.wordpress.com.../slauson_1.jpg |

But that is Slauson Tower, where Slauson and. under the photogs feet, the Santa Fe line to Wilmington crossed Fourtracks. Behind the Photog there is a branch to the right To Whitter? In the nlate 40s it was connected to a new line from the UP at Bartolo, so SP freight trains could get from City of Industry to the LA Harbor via a 'shortcut'. And note that none of the locomotives are electric, but diesel -electric. The trolley pole on the lead locomotive is used to trigger the highway xing signals like the electrics cars did |
And another thing about the Watts pic
That boxcar is not necessarily rusty. It's painted the standard color for most freightcars of the era and previous century , um, Freightcar Red, sometimes called Tuscan Red. The actual color, should you want to buy a gallon for your dining room, varied greatly with RR and age, who mixed it and where the pigment was obtained |

______ I wish this snapshot was larger (and clearer).....but I thought I'd post it anyway. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/MItHhA.jpg past sale / eBay It supposedly shows Watts RR tower in the 1920s. (from this angle it looks like the tracks are aiming right toward the building! ) ....and I can't figure out what the flag is attached to. __ Oh, & thanks for the information on the color of freightcars Ed....very interesting. Some people like architecture pics.....some like rail pics.....some like Hollywood personality pics........etc. That's the reason NLA is still going strong after all these years. |

I'd really like to know what it says above this entry gateway (circled below). At first I thought it might be an entrance to a parking lot behind the P.E. station, but on closer inspection I see two steps in the entryway. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/qowEfY.jpg Rebel's Cocktails to the right of the circle looks like a fairly noirish place to have a vodka gimlet. __ |

The old bag sitting directly under the second microphone from the left is Mrs. Mary D. Nilson, who lived on Windsor Boulevard. From what I can tell, we haven't seen anything of the Briggs-Nilson case here on NLA.... I discovered what may be the case of the world's worst mother-in-law if not just a son-in-law's murderous proclivities while working on the story of 514 South Windsor Boulevard.... There were lots of headlines beginning with this one of July 21, 1959, until the mid-60s. Long story short, Mary Nilson was not happy with her daughter Norma's choice of John Briggs as a husband...but then the bride was three months pregnant.... Norma forgave her husband within days of the "accident"--but not Mary. Briggs pleaded insanity but was nevertheless found guilty of attempted murder and given a 1-20 year sentence. The decision was overturned. The old lady died intestate and Norma got her $2,708,000... then the Briggses divorced after much countersuing. And Norma appears to have then married her ex's brother. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/W7...366-h768-rw-no |

The Railroad typically meant the second one to get there- that it the RR that made a crossing necessary. Second place meant building the tower and providing the manpowere to run it Some towers were special because of a large number of tracks or architectural demands- like the tower at Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal. But there were dozens of towers like Watts and Slauson. For a very special one, try finding a pic of the one that protected the crossing of the Santa Monica Airline and Fourtracks |

:previous: Excellent sleuthing Hoss!
I obviously jumped the gun last night when I thought I had found the "400 Savoy St." scene in the short-film Hoss discovered. It's actually a very brief scene with a drunk behind a billboard. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...923/YvJ1Dk.jpg usc That's N. Broadway behind Officer Clark. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...921/ZMdA1P.jpg usc Not much else to see.....although a streetcar whizzes past at one point. ____________________ |
Hoss, thanks so much for the link to that high quality photograph of the 1948 Wilmington/P.E. scene.
You can clearly see Rebel's 'Cocktails' sign (it was blurry in my pic & I wasn't 100% sure it said cocktails) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...923/pqxGZT.jpg http://www.pacificelectric.org/wp-co...ngton-1948.jpg :previous:and I spot another noirish looking place....The Maritime Club, on the far side of the C of C 'gateway'. At first glance I thought the vehicle parked in front was advertising Bail Bonds. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/pNiY7J.jpg but I believe it says B & H Brand 'something'. __ |

We've visited the Long Beach area a few times recently - these Julius Shulman images are from a little way inland. This is "Job 3641: Douglas Building (Long Beach, Calif.), 1963".
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original Here's the building from a distance. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original There are two black & white images in the set, but one duplicates the first color shot. Here's the other one. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute While I was looking for a location, I came across these undated images at the Library of Congress. They appear to show the same building with an addition at the top and the Boeing name across it. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original All from Library of Congress The photos above are labeled "Douglas Aircraft Company Long Beach Plant, Engineering Office Building, 3855 Lakewood Boulevard, Long Beach, Los Angeles County, CA Photos from Survey HAER CA-315-R". I looked at that address, but only found the low, white Boeing building. It looks like a lot of the area has been cleared. |
