1939 seems awfully early for this photograph.
__

I'm of the opinion that photo was taken in 1939. Don Lee TV station was certainly broadcasting before WW II.

In 1931 Lee was granted a license to begin experimental television broadcasts with station W6XAO in Los Angeles. The station later became KTSL, KNXT and is currently KCBS-TV.

On December 23, 1931, W6XAO went on the air from the eighth-floor transmitter at Seventh and Bixel streets, Los Angeles, at 44 1/2 megacycles, to broadcast one hour daily except Sundays. Later Lee bought the 20 acre ''Mount Lee'' site. The secret key was to get your TV transmitter as high as possible.

From what I've read, television was broadcasting in Los Angeles before WW II. It only operated a few hours per day and most of the TV's were in stores, wealthy homes, bars and hotels. The beginning of WWII put LA TV on hiatus until the end of the War.

Secondly, I don't agree that Noirish LA thread is ''inane". LA, day and night, any year, any time is the definition of noirish. I don't like every post on this thread but so what....that's life. I don't expect people to always post what I like.

Thats just sad and childish. Its a tread people ...and its free. Not something important or something that makes you important ...just a thread..... A very cool one that takes me away from the important stuff.....And I very much thank all the people that happily contribute to this thread...for the fun of it!! ....ethereal_reality......Thank you ..don't ever let selfish people get you down.
Do some people want something for participating?? If you don't like a post ...skip it read the ones you like by the people you like...Whats wrong with people ...how old where the people?? Someone stomping away ...and ..has to say .."I'm leaving" ..needs to grow up or get outside ...and step away from the computer..go live some life.

...Also the thing with.. out of state clocks ..or something....start another thread if you think its important ..if it is it will grow like this one did....This one already has its pace/groove.....and is not about clocks ...as you can see.

Sorry for my venting ...but I'm just sick of these childish people when I read forms

She probably didn't think anything of it. Hatred against Japan was at the boiling point in those days. Pearl Harbor was still very fresh in many people's minds.

For my part, I'm very happy with this thread. Checking in here is a daily appointment for me, and I read each post eagerly.

I imagine the objection must have to do with a gradual broadening of the scope here. I guess we exhausted the ready sources of noir photographs and information some time ago, so new information has gotten hard to find.

It seems only natural, then, that the scope should broaden to include the history of the entire LA area, with emphasis on the built environment, of course. I would certainly hate to see the thread end; we're having way too much fun!

I'm truly sorry you've had to deal with this, and I hope these incidents prove to be isolated.

While I don't have anything to prove it, might it be possible that the pool was an extra source of water for possible firefighting? The surrounding hillsides get very dry in the summer and the broadcasting buildings and equipment were very expensive. They would not want to lose the buildings to fire, especially in the day when there were not giant "scooper" helicopters to fight fires.....Just a thought.

Beck apparently had two locations, one at 5971 S. Main as shown here and another at 8021 S. Vermont. On E-Bay there is a matchbook cover listing the addresses of the two locations. I Googled "Beck's Café" since "Beck's Place" did not bring anything up. I can't find any photos of the Vermont café. Neither building is there now.

Location, unknown. Does the answer possibly lie with the bottom of this electric sign? Area looks elevated. Some "hill" downtown?:shhh:

At these prices, everyone needs a waffle iron, even if it is made by Westinghouse (rather than GE). The orange juice set seals the deal. If you can wait a few months . . . prices will precipitously drop.

I feel the noir aspect that started this thread opened the door to a rather rich historical retrospective of Los Angeles and its environs - something that would have been laughable to those who think Los Angeles has no history (at least, compared to older East coast cities and places around the world).

Maybe the data mining has become varied after 1,200 pages, but there is still so much more yet to be discovered.

The thread is free, and people can come and go as they please. But do check in every now and then - there's always something new to learn about Los Angeles history.

King Edward Hotel, 121 E. 5th St, Los Angeles CA

Reviews:
"I have a friend who lives in the King Edward Hotel, located above King Eddies. I finally got to venture into this apartment/hotel yesterday. To be honest I was hesitant, leave your ID at the front desk. There are notices around for jobs, items for sale and little parties going on in the lobby. There is a collection of old TVs in the lobby along with a small collection of books. The upstairs reminds me of the first building I lived in when I came to LA, living in MacArthur Park, therefore I come in open minded. There is a bathroom at the end of one hall. Hipsters, prison tattooed guys, and just old men are walking around. The only scary one was the hipster who quickly ran to his door and closed it quickly when we passed him in the hallway, he is a door sign saying NO MAID SERVICE. They have maid service? Inside my friends place was small, but with a decent bathroom, full shower and huge windows. I would say for the extremely cheap rent, this place is not bad at all. Am I checking in, hell no. But can I walk in without being creeped, sure."

"These rooms are great, if you are "sub-human". Management does as little as it can. If I could afford it, I would definately move!"

"well at least it was used in a cool 80's slasher -Private Parts (not the howard stern movie)"

"The lobby of the hotel is marble, with a sweeping staircase between 18 foot pillars, the landing featuring a mural in the style of (or by) maxfield parrish - the neighborhood is crowded and non-elite, definitely dangerous at night - over the registration desk is a large - 2' x 3' - photographic portait of George V in military uniform - the hotel was named for his father Edward VII, who was King (and emperor) when the hotel was built in 1904."

Proposition 10, 1938

Detail of picture at USC Digital Library

Sounds like Prop 10 was a measure regarding oil leases on state-owned tideland in Huntington Beach - on the ballot in 1938:
http://librarysource.uchastings.edu/..._pdf/1938g.pdf

Arguments against stated that this "vicious act...will result in the ruination of several miles of the finest public beach in the State"

Huntington Beach was already pretty packed with derricks by this time - here's a photo from the 20's of Clay and Alabama Streets, about a mile and a half from the beach.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ps88e893a2.jpg

The ballot was defeated but it didn't stop the Great Pacific Coast Highway Fire of 1949. Even today Goldenwest Street and the PCH is the south end of a huge, mile-long strip of oil infrastructure owned by Aera Energy and Occidental Petroleum.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ps88742a53.jpg

In 1949, though, it was a "nightmarish three-and-a-half days of horror when the gas in a well at Goldenwest Street and Pacific Coast Highway caught fire. That fire lit up the sky and could be seen as far away as Catalina Island as the flames of the devil's torch reached skyward for 150 feet. The fire started as gas came up to the surface and was accidentally ignited.

Saturday came and went, the steel 100-foot derrick above the well had now melted and fell across Pacific Coast Highway. There were hundreds of onlookers by now to contend with, and traffic up Beach Boulevard caused a heavy jam that was 1 1/2 miles long.

Flames reached 150 feet into the air, and the intense heat was as if hell had surfaced. It began melting the asphalt pavement of Pacific Coast Highway and warping the Pacific Electric tracks."
The Huntington Independent

Anyone got a photo? All those onlookers and no cameras?

Well, since we don't know who they are or what they said--what their specific complaints were, if they offered any, it's hard to reply to this. Calling the thread "inane," though, seems rather harsh and somewhat disrespectful (I.M.O.) to E_R, who's managed the rare feat of keeping it going for years and in so many fascinating ways. In a thread of this scope that encompasses so much (in time and place) I look at it as a smorgasbord (a Bit 'O Sweden reference, perhaps...lol) and have always found something that I enjoy here.

If people want to move on it's never wise to try and change their mind as they'll end up doing what they want to in any case, so I'd just thank them for their many contributions and tell them the door is always open for a welcome return.

Thanks for answering my Proposition 10 question, Sonny☼LA.

The only picture I've found of the 1949 fire is in a book called Huntington Beach, California by Chris Epting. Someone sold a couple of negatives of the fire on eBay in 2012, but while the listing survives, the pictures have gone.
