The deadline for Phase II of the competition of the New Engineering Science Building at UC was 12/30, I believe. I don't know who all of the shortlisted teams are, but one of the designs I have seen so far is very impressive, and quite unique for the University, while still maintaining a lot of features, textures and materials that the campus is known for. It will be interesting to see all of the designs, for what the University is considering a 'game-changing' development. The new building will be pretty massive, possibly close to 500,000 sq ft.

Where would this be built on campus?

Notably, it will facilitate the expansion of the 'Molecular Engineering department' (read applied science) to over 100 faculty. That kind of expansion will put the number of the PME's applied science and engineering faculty at a level on par with the PSD and BSD, which will represent pretty significant departure from the University's traditional approach of research.

Indeed - the one proposal I am familiar with is 9 stories, 10 including the rooftop mechanical penthouse.

Hearing whispers from friends that the university just decided on an architecture firm. They don't know who, but the firm was recently on a tour of the ERC labs and the target completion date is 2025

The completion date I've heard about is 2027, but who knows?

Edit: just found out a winner has NOT been selected yet - there is still the next phase of pre-selection, which includes interviewing the finalists, set to occur within the next 3-4 weeks.

University of Chicago Medicine plans to build $633 million cancer hospital on its Hyde Park campus

University of Chicago Medicine plans to build a $633 million, 500,000-square-foot cancer hospital in Hyde Park — in hopes of addressing health inequities on the South Side and attracting patients from across the region.

The massive center would include 128 beds for overnight patients, space for outpatient services and procedures, an urgent care for cancer patients and be a hub for cancer research, with clinical trials enrolling patients who live on the South Side and elsewhere. The hope is that patients would be able to get nearly all of their cancer care at the center rather than having to go to multiple locations for tests and treatments, said Dr. Kunle Odunsi, director of UChicago Medicine’s Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Quote:

UChicago Medicine said it submitted an application to the state Health Facilities and Services Review Board this week for permission to spend money on design and site planning for the center. If that’s approved, it plans to submit another application in the fall to start construction.

Construction could begin in 2023, and the facility could open to patients in 2026. The free-standing facility is planned for vacant land owned by the university on East 57th Street, between South Maryland and South Drexel avenues.

U.S. News & World Report ranks hospitals by specialty, and most recently ranked Northwestern Memorial Hospital as the sixth best in the country for cancer, and University of Chicago Medical Center as the 21st, with Rush University Medical Center following at 42nd. Northwestern and UChicago Medicine’s cancer centers have been recognized as comprehensive cancer centers by the National Cancer Institute.

Yeah, we responded to an RFP for this, but nothing happened. I hope it's a great design firm, and not the usual suspects..like Cannon design.

Any idea when this will be made public?

No idea, unfortunately..I suspect pretty soon though, since they're planning to start construction next year

Wait is the New Engineering Science Building a separate project from the Cancer building? Sounds like it, which means two 500,000 sq ft buildings coming soon?

That is correct, they are two separate projects, totally about $1.3 billion in new infrastructure/building development between now and 2026-27.

The new engineering building will be on the SW corner of Ellis and 56th and will be closer to 700,000 SF, while the new cancer hospital will be on a vacant lot at 57th and Drexel.

Here is a link to the new cancer hospital on the state Health Facilities site.

https://www2.illinois.gov/sites/hfsr...---22-004.aspx

I was pretty sure this was going to happen several months ago when the university announced renovating Mitchel was too expensive. It's also a return to the hospital's master plan from several years ago which announced a separate cancer hospital before the temporary detour of trying to upgrade Mitchell. (Link to the master plan is posted earlier on this site as is the link to the decision to not upgrade Mitchell.)

Known UChicago projects in planning:

1) New Cancer Hospital
2) New Science / Engineering Building
3) Megadorm (yep, one more dorm coming)
4) rec center (this was originally part of the new parking garage on 61st street. Since it appears it's no longer part of it, the University must have something on the back burner to address the rec center need for South Campus and the greatly expanded undergraduate population now at 7,500 strong.)
5) Harper Court Phase 2
