The Emerald City: Seattle

In late March/early April, I had the opportunity to head up to the Pacific Northwest for some exploration of Seattle and Portland. A friend of mine was attending a medical conference in Seattle, so I tagged along and took advantage of the free hotel room (downtown Sheraton). I spent 5 nights in Seattle and then took Amtrak down to Portland for an additional 3 nights on my own (Portland photos here). The weather was overcast and showery for the most part, but that's to be expected in early spring.

Heading into Belltown after stopping by Top Pot Doughnuts on 5th Avenue for some coffee and two tasty doughnuts.

Very nice comprehensive look at Seattle.

mhays Aug 11, 2011 4:03 AM

Holy shit what a great post. You captured places rarely captured. Good job with the labels too.

Looks like you covered a lot of territory (including my neighborhood of Wallingford). Great tour!

Nice looking city....lots of hills too.

Beautifully done. You really captured the beauty & charm of the city.

Fantastic pictures of the Emerald City, OhioGuy!

Thank you very much for so many beautiful pictures.

Seattle looks like a quiet city with much attraction. I´ve liked its streets and blossoms. Very nice pictures!

Congratulations and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

Travis007 Aug 11, 2011 1:45 PM

Nice photos, I've always found Seattle's great skyline to be underrated. Seattle's geographic setting offers many interesting neighbourhoods and views of the skyline.

giovanni sasso Aug 11, 2011 3:29 PM

wait, wait, wait. how have i spent as much time in seattle as i have and never heard of buy crack park? that is f'n great.

seaskyfan, that's a nice neighborhood you've got there. i stopped through wallingford a couple weeks ago.

good stuff, ohioguy. looks typically seattle for your visit, but you definitely turned over a lot of stones. i like the preview of the cascade train at the crossing at the bottom of the hill.

LAsam Aug 11, 2011 8:43 PM

Beautiful photos... and I think the overcast skies yielded some nice light conditions for you. Thanks for sharing!

Okayyou Aug 12, 2011 5:22 AM

Those blossoms on campus are awesome :D Not sure how I feel about Sydney and Seattle both claiming 'The Emerald City'. I checked the wiki on it, I guess both picked up the nickname in the 80s. I don't know which city deserves it more. Sydney's claim on the name refers to the Emerald City of Oz (Aus) and there are some literary and theatrical references too. Seattle allegedly took on the name because the city is very green, they also stole/borrowed, through the process of a contest, the nickname from Eugene which had been using it before Seattle. Anyway, great shots.

ChrisLA Aug 13, 2011 1:37 AM

You really captured some nice photos of Seattle. Makes me want to hop on Amtrak and take a trip up the coast. It's been way too long (1991) since I visit that city.

Sekkle Aug 13, 2011 3:02 AM

Awesome collection of photos. Can't wait to check out your Portland shots.

Nineties Flava Aug 14, 2011 2:31 AM

Wow this was very comprehensive. I recognized U of W from the college tours... I remember it because of how unbelievably boring the introduction was lol. The fact that there was no air conditioning and the room was stuffy and full with sweaty people didn't help.

Seattle is an exceptionally beautiful city though.

Robert Pence Aug 14, 2011 9:08 AM

That was a superb tour. You covered a lot of territory beyond the usual tourist venues, and the photos are first-rate. Thanks for sharing that.

simms3_redux Aug 15, 2011 12:10 AM

Loving these threads of the PACNW...I'd say Seattle ranks up there with San Fran, Boston, and Philly with urbanity.

mhays Aug 15, 2011 2:26 AM

As a Seattle resident, I disagree about ranking anywhere near those in urbanity. But we've been gradually infilling for decades, as you can see in the photos that mix a lof of eras of apartments. Detached houses are still our dominant land-use, even while multifamily recently took the lead in unit count. Greater Downtown and our neighborhood business districts and arterials can give the wrong impression of what's typical, because that's where density tends to go.

Twitch2 Aug 15, 2011 4:06 AM

Awesume Pictures. They are the finest I have ever seen on this forum. Dude I wish I could be as cool as you.

great set! love the UW pictures.

DenverDan Sep 9, 2011 6:28 AM

Definitely one of the best Seattle threads I've ever seen on here. You took great photos and really captured the essence of Seattle. I love that city and you really made me homesick!
