Germany tellingly isn't testing the dead, thus old people who have died of 'natural causes' etc.

NYGuy posted an excellent pic set of the hospital ship arriving in NYC: http://skyscraperpage.com/forum/show...postcount=3538

Its kinda grim yet chaotic beauty at the same time. The fog, the helicopter, the ship, the social distancing sign. Like something out of a movie, only... reality.

chris08876 Mar 30, 2020 4:35 PM

NYC is about to start issuing summons for people disobeying officers orders to clear and maintain social distancing. Anywhere from $250 to 500. So essentially, if an officer tells you to clear and maintain distance, do so, so one doesn't get fined. And NYC loves to give out fines (like parking tickets.. ughgh).

Per Deblasio, folks have been warned. Also, for folks to call 311 is they see crowds.

Around here, a popular landmark has been repainted. Originally it read, "Good Vibes," then got changed to "Stay Weird," and now...

Meanwhile, people are really talking about how downtown Asheville is seeing something it hasn't seen in well over a decade: boarded up shops. There's also more wildlife roaming around the city, such as this wild turkey strolling up Coxe Avenue around 11am on Sunday. In any other year, downtown would be packed with brunchers and tourists. But not this year. Not at all. There's no one and it's eerie.

Yeah, those ships are impressive. The one in LA was docked in San Diego, got to seem it up close on jet skis...

No, it's an art market in a restored art deco Woolworth store.

I am still waiting for details on where the medical staff is coming from. Once again, there are no military doctors or nurses standing around with nothing to do. For now, it may make sense to pull them from less impacted areas including the one where they would normally come in wartime: The Norfolk/Newport News/Portsmouth area of Virginia. But as the epidemic dies down a bit in New York and/or heats up in Norfolk, will NY graciously accept their going back to the their large, solid hospital ashore and taking care of the people there?

isaidso Mar 30, 2020 6:14 PM

Sheesh, things seem to be so much worse down south in the US. It may be unavoidable, but I hope things don't get that bad here. Good luck to you all. On a side note, why is the death rate so different in various developed countries? I suppose access to health care, health care standards, and health care protocols come into play. Some countries like Italy have moved beyond the ability to provide adequate care due to the sheer numbers infected relative to the size of their health care system. The numbers for the G7 + Australia are as follows.

Cases

United States: 142,793
Italy: 97,689
Germany: 63,079
France: 40,174
United Kingdom: 19,522
Canada: 6,320
Australia: 4,245
Japan: 1,866

Deaths

Italy: 10,779
France: 2,606
United States: 2,490
United Kingdom: 1,228
Germany: 545
Canada: 65
Japan: 54
Australia: 18

Percentage Dying

Italy: 11.03%
France: 6.49%
United Kingdom: 6.29%
Japan: 2.89%
United States: 1.74%
Canada: 1.03%
Germany: 0.86%
Australia: 0.42%

The extra capacity is what was most urgently needed. Medical professionals from around the country are headed to the outbreak hotspots.

Crawford Mar 30, 2020 6:29 PM

Yeah, I'm not sure if medical professionals are the issue, as much as space, at least in the NY area. Space is always an issue, for any industry, even in good times, because of local RE costs and development difficulties.

And all the local med schools just graduated everyone early, so there should be a fresh batch of assistance. Some of these schools are pretty big. I believe NYU is the nation's largest medical school. Columbia, Einstein and Downstate are pretty big too. Mt. Sinai, Cornell and NYMC somewhat smaller, but that's still a bunch of MDs that would otherwise scatter nationwide, and are now temporarily local.

kool maudit Mar 30, 2020 6:35 PM

The US has about twice the per capita caseload as Canada and has for a few weeks now.

chris08876 Mar 30, 2020 7:09 PM

Medical tents are to be set up in Central Park to keep up with demand.

It's New York. Blame them. They account for half our numbers.

Death is being defined differently in different countries. There is no uniform methodology to testing, which is why it's hard to apply the data from other countries to other countries.

Quote:

In Italy, about 10% of people known to be infected have died. In Iran and Spain, the case fatality rate is higher than 7%. But in South Korea and the U.S. it's less than 1.5%. And in Germany, the figure is close to 0.5%.

So what gives?

The answer involves how many people are tested, the age of an infected population and factors such as whether the health care system is overwhelmed, scientists say.

...

Also, because of the way countries monitor pandemics like the coronavirus, he says, the case fatality rate tends to decrease over time. The reason: When a new disease first shows up, testing usually focuses on severely ill people who are at high risk of dying. Later on, testing is more likely to include people with milder illness who are less likely to die.

...

A country's case fatality rate is simply the number of deaths (the numerator) divided by the number of infections (the denominator). The problem is, both of these numbers may be unreliable.

For example, when an outbreak begins and health officials aren't looking for the virus, some people may die at home and never be diagnosed. That would lower the numerator and "might lead to an underestimate of the case fatality rate," Lawrence says.

Michigan just released their daily tally. There were 1,012 new cases and 52 deaths in the latest 24-hour period. That will likely be the highest number of single day fatalities of any state except New York... unless New Jersey has a spike in deaths. NJ and MI tied for single day fatalities yesterday.

@ Pedestrian:

Since I am an essential worker that rides the NY subway everyday, would this getup protect me:

Plastic trash bag wrapped around my face below the eyes with the bottom open for air. Plastic poncho over myself with the face bag inside the poncho. I've gotten air through this method but my entire body below the eyes is a wall of plastic. Would I be safe?
