TELUS building reaches for the Sky

TELUS is reaching for the sky with a new architectural landmark in Calgary’s downtown core, transforming the entire 7th Avenue block into one of the most technologically innovative and environmentally-friendly sites in North America.

[…]

TELUS Sky will be a LEED Platinum signature development for TELUS created by world-renowned architects Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Dialog, along with partners: developer Westbank and real estate investment trust Allied Properties. The 750,000 square foot vibrant mixed-use tower will incorporate office, retail and residential space. There will be 430,000 square feet of office space, of which 155,000 square feet will be for TELUS. The development, scheduled for completion in the fall of 2017, will provide approximately 250 jobs for Calgarians, and engage local trades and companies to complete our vision.

Fantastic addition for Calgary, or any city for that matter, but feels lacking in some regard... either that or I am just fucking idiotic picky with 'signature' buildings.

My mistake – this will be 58 storeys, not 60: http://www.calgaryherald.com/busines...228/story.html

TELUS Sky is expected to be the second tallest building in Calgary, approximately 20 metres shorter than The Bow building.
The Bow is 236m, and to be the second tallest (for now) it would have to be taller then the Suncor Energy Centre, which is 214m. So this one will be about 215m, which is 705 ft. I don't think that this will ever be Calgary's second tallest though, as 225 - 6th (a block west), will likely start construction before this one, and will Calgary's new tallest.

Super good on CGY. Its placement adjacent to the Bow is an eye-opener and, in a continuting departure from the BOW and 8thAvePl, is a refreshing change from the IMO tedious high-rise geometry in that city.

The architect (Bjarke Ingels) summed it up best..... A cowgirl in amongst a group of cowboys.

Ha! Exactly what I've spent the last few days drafting a treatise in my head about:
"How to Sex A Skyscraper".

Some slightly less refined renderings than the newest ones, but it shows a few more angles of this beauty:

Beautiful proposal! Congrats Calgary - and Bjarke Ingels Group at that, nice!

damn that looks fine. i'm a calgarian who transplanted to ottawa many years ago and i'm pretty jealous. i must point out, however, that ottawa is in a huge building boom and we are finally surpassing our tallest building (Terrasses de la Chaudiere at 30 stories/124m/406ft and built in 1978) with several new buildings up to 48 stories in the next few years. i would REALLY like to see some iconic architecture like this building in ottawa though!

I look at this and curb my temper asking why this gem isn't 200' taller and joining the rising 57th Street canyon in New York City.
::cue Pace Thick n' Salsa Cowboy Chorus echo::
Again I look at this and wonder what the fruits of a pairing of BIG with Dame Zaha Hadid would look like..........

Dwils01 Jul 5, 2013 5:18 AM

Looks amazing, with the Bow and Telus Sky the skyline is slowly extending eastward.

A BIG and ZH collaboration would be an odd building for sure!

RWin Jul 5, 2013 7:08 PM

My wife likes it too.

DrNest Jul 6, 2013 3:01 AM

I'm going to go against the grain and say this is ugly. The curve/twist makes it look to fat and bottom heavy. I like the pattern at the top, but the way it looks in the proposal is not nice.

TallBob Jul 7, 2013 6:31 AM

I said before on other posts I don't care for the "twist". I really like the upper half of the structure! But the biggie for me is 340+ rental apartments in a 720 foot building.... In Calgary!

JayPro Jul 7, 2013 4:14 PM

But.....but.....but.....the twist!
That's precisely what this skyline needs! Look at Bow right next to it and tell me you really aren't digging how these two dance so well together.

I'm not a big fan of Bow either. The saving grace of Bow being that with Telus Sky so close, Bow will hide it from a lot of views.
