Scott, 1956 11 July 1956. Joe Scott (sitting at his desk in his office). Mr. Los Angeles. Although I find his politics reprehensible, few men have deserved a soubriquet more. Perfectly suited to his times. USCdigital archive/Los Angeles Examiner Negatives Collection, 1950-1961 |

The shot above would actually be 1923--Weigel-Rixon didn't even open until 1921: http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/330...oncomplete.jpg Los Angeles Times July 28, 1921 By 1923, the building was slated for replacement by the Chester Williams Building: http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/370...ldinbgdraw.jpg Los Angeles Times July 29, 1923 The Sun Drug Co signed a 99-year lease for the same corner spot, but by the time the building was completed in 1926, the Gensler-Lee Jewelry Co had moved in. On the second floor was Boyd's, a new men's store, an echo of Weigel-Rixon. According to the Times of December 17, 1926, Boyd's was to have opened the next day and have... https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-W...2520PM.bmp.jpg It doesn't look nearly so impressive in this shot of the newly completed building... http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/5826/00008059.jpg Weigel-Rixon doesn't seem to have reopened elsewhere after it closed in 1923; the Chester Williams Building still stands. |
Does anyone know what theater this is? (note the large eagle with light bulbs)

I happened to have my camera out so I grabbed this screen shot from the opening moments of an episode of Mission Impossible
(sorry-I didn't write down the name of the episode). oops. this thing was huuuge. I'll re-post I thought it would be interesting to try and locate this extra-wide dead end street, but so far I haven't had any luck. Anyone have an idea? __ |

"American Theatre, 452 S. Broadway, running from about 1910 through at least 1925. Seating: 500. Status: Demolished for the Chester Williams Building built on the northeast corner of Broadway and 5th in 1926. There's an existing one story building (450 S. Broadway) just north of the theatre site that dates from 1908. It appears in the photos as two stories -- it evidently lost the top one at some time." |

Wow, I just found this. "Great Skyscraper Planned for Eighth and Broadway."
http://imageshack.us/a/img43/4435/aa...ldingpropo.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img12/1424/aabmerrittsky.jpg http://historicwintersburg.blogspot....and-bolsa.html So the original proposal for the Merritt Building was a soaring skyscraper of 233ft! (remember this is only 1910) __ |
The Beckett House was mentioned back on page 93. Big Orange Landmarks just posted a link to a lot of photos of the house including the interior. The second floor is in sad shape:(

A nice picture of the Saltbox can be found here. It was used for the album cover for Taj Mahal's debut album.

Since 28th Street and Burlington don't intersect, I'm wondering if this view is in the Westlake district or in the University district down on 28th (or in either)...anyway, I'd love to know what those pillars led to. At top is another ebay card described on the back as "Burlington and 7th"--the lawns look awfully broad for Westlake/Pico-Union, but knowing that quite a few ancient houses still exist in these precincts, I looked for evidence of any of these, to no avail. |
:previous: I searched for remnants of those stone pillars as well. -without success-

I came across this newspaper clipping today.
http://imageshack.us/a/img5/4566/aab...latimesblo.jpg http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/thed.../06/index.html I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I never noticed the old Los Angeles Times eagle on top of the 1935 building. (as a reminder, it's the eagle that survived the 1910 bombing) http://imageshack.us/a/img138/7931/a...le1910lafd.jpg http://www.lafire.com/famous_fires/1..._TimesFire.htm below: Sure enough there it is atop the 1935 building. I guess I just always overlooked it. http://imageshack.us/a/img203/4798/aabtimeseaglepc.jpg http://dornsife.usc.edu/la-walking-t...imes-building/ below: You can see it in this 1937 photograph as well. http://imageshack.us/a/img132/879/aabtimeseagle1937.jpg http://1x57.com/2011/12/05/130-years...pers-birthday/ __ So my question is: Where is the eagle now? http://imageshack.us/a/img820/7082/a...etodaybldg.jpg http://laist.com/2008/12/08/la_times...ne_files_f.php My first thought was that it might be in the lobby, but the lobby has this huge globe as it's centerpiece. http://imageshack.us/a/img13/130/aab...globelobby.jpg http://www.placesonline.com/north_am...times_building Does anyone know what happened to the eagle?? ...anyone know when it was taken down? __ |
You can see the square pedestal it used to stand on just behind the flagpole.
