Evanston, IL - Chicago's fantastic northern neighbor

I headed up to Evanston today to take some photos of my favorite Illinois city other than Chicago. An active downtown, beautiful leafy neighborhoods, picturesque lakefront setting, and a youthful collegiate presence all combine to create an outstanding city.

nice shots

wow..such a clean quality place

ShadowMaster May 20, 2009 5:40 AM

Not too shabby, I like it! It was just yesterday I was speaking with "Koth" about the periphery of major cities and certain interesting satellite cities within it. Jersey City, Glendale, Stamford, Long Beach, Bellevue were mention, we seen shots of them before. I was curious about Evanston in particular and the Chicago surroundings. Thanks for posting.

spyguy May 20, 2009 5:56 AM

Fantastic thread, you covered pretty much everything from downtown to NU to the gorgeous houses and lakefront.

whatsthepoint13 May 20, 2009 11:16 AM

Such a nice city, with great bones.
Beautiful, especially for a satellite city.

jodelli May 20, 2009 12:30 PM

Looks like Evanston is still a pretty nice place. Been a while since I've seen it. Thanks for the pictures.

xzmattzx May 20, 2009 1:26 PM

Looks like a nice little city.

DeBaliviere May 20, 2009 2:16 PM

Hope you went to Al's Deli on Noyes.

ColDayMan May 20, 2009 2:50 PM

I dig.

VTnardo May 20, 2009 3:23 PM

Pretty nice little college town on the waterfront. Loving the metro lines and the eye candy ;)

Steely Dan May 20, 2009 4:35 PM

fantastic! probably the best evanston set this forum has ever seen. you really captured the wonderful combination of its urban retail corridors and downtown along with its lush and leafy residential side streets. i work up in evanston and i grew up in neighboring wilmette, so this place has been pretty much my stomping grounds for most of my life, even though i've never technically lived within its borders.

evanston isn't exactly a satellite city so much as it is a city neighborhood that was never successfully annexed by chicago despite several attempts, and as a result it developed a much more pronounced downtown area than other northside city neighborhoods. evanston directly borders the city along howard street and downtown evanston is only ~12 miles north of downtown chicago as the crow flies. the image below gives a pretty good idea of the geographic relationship between evanston and the city (downtown evanston is on the lower left, with northwestern university in the extreme lower left corner)).

Excellent shots! Evanston looks like a really nice city. Eye candy appreciated too! Thanks!

BnaBreaker May 20, 2009 6:28 PM

I've always considered Evanston to essentially be just another city neighborhood. Great shots.

Jibba May 20, 2009 8:02 PM

Great shots of Evanston, OhioGuy. I don't make it up there nearly as often as I should. There are some wonderful neighborhoods around its downtown with some great homes.

ChrisLA May 20, 2009 8:47 PM

Nice city, almost 20 years ago I used to live in Edgewater neighborhood so I was very close to this city. It was one of my favorite areas to explore when I had nothing to do. I will be in Chicago the first week month June for a very brief visit. Hopefully the weather will be nice and Evanston just might be on my agenda to check out once again.

BTW did they finally finish all of upgrades on the Red & Purple line, or would Metra be a better option heading there from downtown Chicago?

Wooster May 20, 2009 8:52 PM

Very nice!

as i live downtown and work up in evanston, i'm eminently qualified to answer this question.

if you can catch a purple line express train which only run at weekday rush hours, the L trip from downtown to downtown evanston is about 45 minutes, if you're doing a red line to purple line long-haul that will take about an hour. conversely, metra will take you about 20 minutes to go from ogilvie up to downtown evanston. the draw backs to metra being that it's more expensive, the schedules are FAR less flexible, and oglivie train station is all the way over in the west loop, which can be a bit of an annoyance if you're already in the east loop/near north side and just want to hop on the L and get going.

though i've found that the best and most satisfying way to get from downtown up to evanston is to ride my bike ;)

you should definitely try and make it up to evanston if you can, the downtown has certainly changed quite a bit over the last 2 decades.

Take Metra. It's a one seat, four stop ride from downtown Chicago to downtown Evanston. It'll definitely be quicker than riding the CTA up to Evanston. Metra gets you there in 25 minutes or less. Even if you caught the purple line express in the morning rush and the return purple line express in the evening rush, it still involves stops between downtown Evanston & the Chicago border, as well as all of the stops between Belmont & the loop. It ends up being 40 minutes (give or take a few minutes). As for the red line, the tracks are vastly improved between downtown and Addison (approximately 18-20 minutes from Jackson to Addison), but it's slow between Addison & Wilson, and of course the red line makes all of the stops up to Howard before you're forced to switch to the purple line at Howard Street (probably about 55-60 minutes total via the red line to the purple line). However if you'd like to be able to enjoy the neighborhood views from downtown Chicago to downtown Evanston, taking the purple line express would be more interesting than riding Metra.

(and now I see Steely already responded while I was typing up my response)

Thanks for the comments everyone! :)

ChrisLA May 20, 2009 9:21 PM

Thanks guys for the information, this will be of great help. I will be staying in the east loop with some relatives who just moved back to Chicago. I think they are staying in the same condos they once stayed in year ago. You know the one highrise that sits alone by the lake. I know at one time it was the tallest residental highrise in Chicago, but they have may have already changed.

Again thanks, and the photos are very very nice.

Hey, it's not often we get to see Evanston on here! Nice!

Evanston is lovely. I spent a lot of time there on my first trip to Chicago back in 2002. I think if I ever were to move to Chicago, Evanston would be the place.

Me too, it would be one of the areas I like to live if I ever move back to Chicagoland.

May I ask why Evanston? Does it sort of remind you of your home of Pasadena, CA? For me thats exactly what it reminded me of the first time I stepped foot in this city.

Yes, that's exactly why. It's beautiful, peaceful, and away from the city but very much connected to it at the same time.

As a matter of fact, my former piano teacher, who previously lived in Evanston, said she settled in Pasadena because it reminded her of Evanston.

kcexpress69 May 20, 2009 11:15 PM

Nice area. Definately how a suburb should be!! Thanks for the pics!!

Thundertubs May 21, 2009 5:18 PM

Nicely done. This shows off the Evanston vibe well. Aside from some uggo 1960's concrete invaders, N'western has a heck of a campus.

Wonderful thread and looks like a nice area. Never been this far away from the CBD but need to get out there. Love the water shots!

kanhawk May 22, 2009 6:34 AM

This area always reminds me of John Hughes movies from the 1980s like Ferris Bueller's Day Off ,Home Alone and those Molly Ringwald flicks that were set in towns north of Chicago. Thanks for the tour, and the reminder of those movies.

MobyLL May 22, 2009 2:41 PM

Great shots! Evanston has a lot of amenities to work with -- lakefront, Northwestern U, transit connections to Chicago -- and it looks like Evanston has made the most of those features.

UrbanSophist May 22, 2009 3:09 PM

You really captured the Evanston feel!

Grego43 May 26, 2009 12:38 AM

Nice work, OhioGuy! (the eye candy didn't hurt, either!) Evanston is looking very smart these days...its come a long way in the 10 years since I left Chicago.

Evanston looks great. Oh and some nice guys too. ;)

My thoughts exactly. I was in Chicago twice and its a beautiful city. My second time there I hoped to get to Evanston for the above reason...mainly for John Candy's "Uncle Buck". I wanted to get pictures of the schools in the movie and of course the White house on 2602 Lincoln Street. The movie ends with Candy waving in front of that house.
Unfortunately I didn't get up there :(
When my nieces were kids, they knew that movie line for line and often played out scenes from it.

Nightsky Oct 24, 2014 10:23 AM

Nice photos! If I manage to travel to Chicago next year I will visit Evanston as well. :)
